No lose situation for the Spurs. Either the Spurs win and laugh. Or the Spurs lose and can point at Duncan and possibly Manu.

No Duncan? No Manu?

No problem.

Wait, so now teams ARE allowed to use players being out as an excuse? Because all I've heard for months is that the Suns fans were "whining" about Amare missing Game 5.

If that's the case, I think I'll go ahead and note that the Spurs 2003 and 2007 championships were substantially assisted by the fact that their opposition were missing key players.

Look for Bonner to have a huge night and carry this team into the playoffs. He's going to show the Mavs how a real MVP handles bidness.

One day Mav and Mav Fan will recognize the difference between the regular season and the playoffs.

What does this have to do with regular season and playoffs? It makes absolutely no difference when we're talking about whether or not it's "acceptable" to use a player being out as an excuse.

Either a loss can be blamed on a player injury/suspension/whatever, or it can't. Unfortunately, San Antonio hypocrisy reigns supreme here. As far as I can tell, the rule is two-pronged:

1) If a Spurs player is out, it's a viable excuse for losing
2) If the opposing team's player is out, it's not an excuse

Nice. Eerily similar to another oft-repeated mantra of "If the Spurs win, it's because of championship play; if they lose, it's because of the refs."

Sure, if you're applying the articulated in the original post here.

But remember, the rule only applies when Spurs fans say it does.

Congrats. You've solved the basis of all Mav ills.

Congratulations. You're quite apt at taking 2 sentences out of context and attempting to construe them in manner absolutely irrelevant to the original point. Are you a journalist, by chance?

I'll take your blimp-launching tactics to mean you have absolutely no refute for me calling you and (some) of your brethren out on your laughable hypocrisy.

Enjoy the game tonight--after all, it's a "win-win" situation for the Spurs, no? Got love that injury excuse being played before the game has even started. :lol

I think that, in the sense that many Spurs fans generally believe that the regular season is a charade for elite teams and doesn't say much about what should be expected in a playoff matchup, timvp's point is fair.

Had everyone been healthy for the Spurs tonight and the Mavs' won again, I don't know that many knowledgable Spurs fans would be jumping off bridges at the thought that a repeat was impossible. Anyone who knows anything about the Mavs and Spurs knows that the teams are disgustingly closely-matched and that one break here or there for either team could be the difference in a playoff series. With that, a regular season win in San Antonio over the Spurs is really irrelevant to determining what might happen in a playoff series, even if everyone's healthy in both instances. That's particularly true if Duncan is out for the Spurs (or if Dirk is out for the Mavs) and even more so if a secondary star like Manu is also out at the same time.

Until the Mavericks show that they can rebound from their recent playoff flameouts, both of which seemed to raise some fair questions about what's between the ears and in the chests of the Mavericks' players, regular season success against the Big Bully doesn't mean much to outsiders -- and it really means little if Timmy D doesn't play.

If the Spurs manage to win this game then they obviously played the better game and deserved to win. If the Mavs win then they played the better game and deserved the win. It's a win-lose for both teams as one will win and one will lose. Although I have to think this game means a bit more to the Mavs given their losses to beatable teams and since they're a few games off pace in the division at the moment, and probably off pace of where they wanted to be by December 5th.

I'll go a step further and say that I think the Spurs-Mavs regular season matchups have meant more to the Mavs for a long time and particularly the last couple of seasons.

Ill go a step further in that, if the Spurs win, it gets some of the guy's confidence against them back, even though they won't admit it, AND, it helps in the division race.

They would go up 4 games.

Pretty decent margin in December.

12-05-2007, 04:35 PM
^Exactly. I'd say Mavs play way too intensely against the Spurs in the regular season. Case in Point, after the last Mavs Spurs game of this season, Mavs dropped 3 in a row to lesser teams and haven't looked good in their victories since then. Whereas the Spurs seem have been playing at the same level throughout the regular season, and pick it up in April. Case in point...they looked like they were playing the Blazers the last time they played the Mavs. And they've played at that level every game. It's just easier to beat the lesser opponents at that level.

But not stupid turnovers. Why do they always look as nervous as a 15 year old on his first date when they play the Mavs?
Yeah. They're forcing a lot of jumpshots, that they never do against other teams. Like Barry. Manu.

I think they should relax a little bit more. But I do like the high energy to this game.

You know what is funny? I can hear the commentators at the end of the season now.

"Well, the Mavs and Spurs met twice this year. The first meeting was easily taken by Dallas, but as you will recall, Tim Duncan did not play in that game because of an injury to his knee and ankle."

The rest will go one of two ways, "Yes, and the Spurs just couldn't handle the pressure without Duncan there. Duncan really anchors the defense for the Spurs, will really carry them. We tend to forget how good Tim Duncan is, because there are two other legitimate stars on that team. Boy did that game remind us and the fans of San Antonio what a vital role Tim Duncan plays for this organization."

Or.

"Yes, and if you'll remember, it was the dominance of Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili that really carried the Spurs that game. They played an even more up-tempo style of ball and the quickness of Parker and cleverness of Ginobili in getting into the lane was what saved the Spurs. I'm not trying to say that Tim Duncan doesn't play a huge and vital role for that team, but the variety that the Spurs can throw at you is so impressive. The Mavs just don't have an answer when Tony and Many are getting into the lane. And of course, they've got great outside shooters as well. Just so many ways this team can beat you, even without their franchise players. Goes to show you how good they are."
