I do think police and military are outlandishly exalted in the USA; that does not mean I consider them to be "less than" any other trade.
No, but you discounted the feelings of people who value them more than you expect them to. I fail to understand what changes when people die that you can't feel that way about them while alive, or understand why some feel the way they do about those that take a job that puts them in danger, and, even if it is what they sign up for, they are doing it for "us".
It seems hypocritical and phony to me, but oh well. Not calling you out, it's a typical at ude displayed by too many.
I don't think holding a different opinion discounts the feelings of anyone else. Lots of jobs are dangerous, lots of jobs entail service to the public. I think it's absolutely ok for people to show appreciation for the work others do while they're still alive.
Must say, I'm at a bit of a loss as to how my private opinion could possibly interfere with anyone else's enjoyment of their own feelings or prevent their appreciation of others.
I think it's probably a symptom of the excessive valorization of police and the military than any opinion that is not full-throated praise is taken as a knock; also that any criticism of bad things police and soldiers do is swiftly characterized by others as hatred for the uniform.
