"qualification" is really a misnomer here... the value on the candidate has more to do with electability and likeability, and not preparedness for the job.

If the last POTUS election didn't make that clear, not sure what will. This isn't new either, POTUS races have been a popularity contest for a long time now.
That's an age old truth about politics though. 1st time Presidents quite often have no qualifications to be POTUS, they've never met with foreign leaders nor any of the other things the POTUS has to do. They lack experience. Sometimes 2nd term POTUS is just 1 year experience 4 times.

Popularity is a misnomer. Ron Paul was quite popular. The corporate media is allowed to quell that. That is the real conundrum we face.
Ron Paul had name recognition, like Bernie did, and a cadre of very loud minority of followers. The media doesn't cast votes, people do.

I could argue this; but I'll just tell you that the very conventional wisdom is in bency (membership) has its privileges.
Fair enough. My experience tells me the longer you served in public office, the more baggage you collected and the more ammo the opposition has on you.

This is largely why both Barack and Don had it pretty easy on their first go around...

I understand that concern and what not, but I don't know a single voter that gets excited about voting for candidate X because purported qualifications.

And let's not overlook the fact that fans will come up with inane excuses for that too, like Don was qualified to handle the economy because "he has a lot of money".

Unfortunately, qualifications probably don't enter the top 10 reasons to vote for somebody, IMO.

People with qualifications never make it that far. Along with qualifications comes background and decisions, and the dirt that can be spun against you by more powerful opponents poisons the well for you. Americans are gullible, believe anything (Garth Brooks supporting Bernie Sanders for example). As long as the electorate is IV fed by social media and powerful interest group controlled news outlets, this won't change.

It's like the Dow, I cannot explain it. I just try to profit from it.

Howard Dean screamed on stage and that was it for him. Bill Clinton played a sax on Arsenio.

    ed and un able.

I should say that's what I don't get about the rabid fans either. I can see that in maybe Ron Paul or Bernie followers, who clearly thought their guy was all about certain principles.

But the generic Shillary, Joe Biden, Trump, Bush fan, that isn't really getting a dime out of it, and continually votes against their best interest, that's truly puzzling.

If there's one thing you can say about those guys, is that you're not voting for them on principles. Feels like team sports at that point. Americans can be weird like that.

It's team sports. We don't usually see major changes, which is why over half the eligible voters skip the polls. I mean, imagine you're from France so you rep Tony Parker when Manu was clearly better.

The media steers people. If you haven't figured that out by now, then you just don't understand how sh** works.

If Huckabee hadn't stayed in the 08 primaries and screwed over Romney, he would've face non-in bent Obama and probably won.

Imagine if Biden were the in bent and Trump wasn't; he'd have a better hand probably.

The "baggage" only goes against a very unsuccessful in bent, which Trump isn't one. Even the first Bush would've won despite his sh** economy if not for spoiler Perot. Clinton got caught lying to Americans blatantly; but the economy was roses.

The media steers people. If you haven't figured that out by now, then you just don't understand how sh** works.
    It steers people like you.

Everyone relies on some sort of media to get news because YOU CANT BE EVERYWHERE.
Picking out what seems likely and what seems unlikely is the game.
A game you are extraordinarily poor at.

You think you somehow have some great conspira insight without the least bit of concern about why and how some plan could be hatched.

    9-11 truther says it all.
You are a fool. You are enamored with the least likely explanations purely because you get your woodies from thinking you can pick out plots that others cant.
    The "Im not Sheeple Syndrome".

Did we go to the moon? Why do you believe, not believe, and what evidence leads you to think the way you do.
    Explain it.

And more than any one thing, when asked for your sources for information, you will not give in anymore. Because this board will rip it up; you have already had it happen and seen it happen with other posters, so you come on here with as bad as the Great Bloated Plot, only you hide your sources because its ridiculously unworthy and then use the worst sort of juvenile reasoning.

It is important that you get used as a punching bag though.
Sometimes posters need to get embarrassed into stopping, but you push through it all, oblivious to your service.
Thanks for providing the latest in stupidity. Its hard to keep up with it all, keep us informed.

You're projecting. You think it's a plot by the media why your preferred political leaning isn't mainstream, when the reality is that because the idea simply doesn't translate to reality.

Take this epidemic crisis, a once in a generation event. If we'll be in a Libertarian system, it's everybody to fend for themselves. We grew out of that as a civilization two centuries ago. It didn't work out.

This is ridiculous. Obama won '08 by a huge margin (365 to 173 EV). Romney had a much better shot in '12, he squandered with his 40% talk.

There's only two reasons where an in bent would have an advantage over an equally popular challenger: 1) we're in the middle of a war, where people are reluctant to change leadership, 2) the first term was an absolute success.

    Neither apply here.

I like that voting is optional though. I lived half my life with the obligation of going to vote, and it can be a show, and worse than being engaged because you have a reason to.

So you are saying you had to vote before because it actually mattered.
Obliged meaning you felt you had to?

But in the US at this time, it really does not?
