Inside The Dangerous Online Fever Swamps Of American Police

Cops have a far-right media ecosystem of their own, where they post racist memes, spread disinformation and call for violence against antifa.

“dominop” wrote that “A Firing squad would be a good cure for ANTIFA!!!” Other users chimed in to say snipers or napalm might be more fitting.

    in
Facebook groups and on news sites such as Law Enforcement Today — a sort of Breitbart-like outlet written by and for police — there is a fervent narrative that police are under nonstop siege, and that antifa in particular is a constant threat.

Wild misinformation and bigotry are rampant, with people who claim to be current and former officers posting debunked falsehoods and racist stereotypes about protesters.

most of those posts would be right at home in right-wing police media.

“What I think we have here is a market for this kind of racist and divisive garbage across the internet, and unfortunately police are participating in that wave that is witnessed across various professions,”

Law Enforcement Today claims to be the largest law enforcement-owned and -operated media company in America.

It has repeatedly promoted far-right conspiracy theorists and authoritarian policies, particularly during the recent mass demonstrations against police violence.

LET has more than 800,000 followers on Facebook and runs a syndicated radio show.

The site’s articles often bear only a passing resemblance to reality.

The consistent message is that police are perpetually under attack, and that the government — with the exception of President Donald Trump — does not have their back.

One LET article quotes a source purporting to be an anonymous Connecticut state trooper,

who warns that riots in rural areas would be reminiscent of guerrilla warfare in Afghanistan and Iraq, and that

“once they start moving into rural America, there will be a LOT of bloodshed.”

The message board is a cesspool of disinformation, bigoted memes and far-right propaganda, and

regularly lights up with racist comments after publicized incidents of police brutality against people of color.

He wasn't unarmed. He stole the taser from the cops.

    a) unarmed as it relates to a lethal weapon

    b) the taser was spent... and only could have been used with a direct-contact stun, could not be shot any further. outside of that, it was a paperweight. the guy was running away, had his back to the police and was unarmed at the time of the shooting.

cop had his taser out, and in that moment decided to put the taser way and took out his firearm to immediately shoot a guy running way. its not a justified use of force and the guy should be fired. i dont think there's enough evidence (or at least not what i've seen, prosecutors may have more) for murder, though

    Taser is a weapon.

Yeah, I'm aware. The cop made a decision on the heat of the moment as he slightly turned and directed at him. It's unfortunate this criminal did so much to put himself in a position to get shot.

taser was spent. did not pose a threat to the officer or anybody else. let alone to the point that it would justify the cop putting his taser away and switching to his firearm as the guy had his back turned and was running away

if we need to purge police departments from officers more interested in defending one another from accountability than the welfare of the citizens they swore an to protect, then so be it.

He resisted because he was a criminal and didn't want to go back to jail. Let's pretend he was terrified as the police were being as delicate as possible.

This is great news... time to dismantle the Atlanta police fraternity and hire trained professionals instead.

You would have shot him after the first punch. If you were threatened with a taser you would your pants.

Amid defunding debate, Boston police payroll surges.

Dozens of officers earn more than $300K a year

“These kinds of salaries aren’t new, and they keep happening, over and over and over again," said City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo.

“Overtime isn’t supposed to be a normal thing."
