I might be wrong, but I don't think the establishment Dems are going to have a choice in the matter very much longer. The George Floyd stuff swung black America further to the left (i.e. the Missouri 1st district primary where the gun couple said a "Marxist" won the primary), and there's now a lot more infrastructure and in place when progressive candidates want to challenge in bents or vye for open seats.
Already said it in another thread, but the Mass primary next week is huge. If Markey wins big against Kennedy, Pelosi has egg on her face for endorsing Kennedy after claiming to only be interested in helping in bents win regardless of their politics, and if Alex Morse beats Richie Neal it's an even bigger upset than when AOC won her primary in 2018.
In 2022 I think we'll see a waive of progressive challengers in deep blue districts and in a few senate races. I'm crossing my fingers Ro Khanna runs for Kamala Harris's seat if she becomes VP
