oh i agree that is a huge part of the US becoming a police state. Highest per capita incarceration rate, rampant police abuse and corruption, its been evident for decades. What i cant comprehend is how many cheerleaders they have, in the "land of the free" no less.

The US is highly indoctrinated to disciplinary punishment. It's touted as the solution to way more things than are susceptible to it. I would say, from a rational viewpoint, that the use of violence to quell protests against police violence is heinous and peculiar stupidity, but it's not. Nope, the police provide very little in the way of public safety and do much to harm it. Likewise, the police routinely fail in their charge to protect life and property, we saw that last night.

The police are mainly there to suppress nonwhite folks and take revenge against perceived (or actual) social malefactors. Defunding and depolicing is the way to go, the US constabulary is beyond reform.

well as probably the leftiest person on this board, the situations to me are so different. when a black kid kills someone its usually to steal from them, and its wrong but at least its easy to identify motive and understand the flawed reasoning, and think of ways to address it..

when a white kid kills someone its usually over a grievance or perceived threat or disrespect, is often planned or involves some planning, and what i was trying to convey in my other post is that the motive is so misguided. It reminds me of the jihadi suicide bombers, looking for martyrdom and approval in the least approvable manner possible. i guess its a mental health crisis that explodes in shootings but is constantly present, of disaffected people looking for an in group..

Well, I do live in Austin, TX, one the few major US cities with a declining AA population over the last 30 years, so you sort of have a point there

Still, you're wrong about that. Not that it really matters, but I've lived in East Austin ("oh, that's Darkietown!", my beloved grandmother once said) for over half my time here. I arrived in 1987. Admittedly, it's way more gentrified now.
