One party wants to make it harder for Americans to vote safely in a epochal pandemic.

The Harris County Republican Party on Monday joined a lawsuit asking the Texas Supreme Court to halt the county clerk’s plan to send mail ballot applications to all 2.4 million registered voters.

it's contempt of Congress time, neither opprobrium nor legal consequence attach meaningfully to such behavior anymore.

The House Oversight Committee is preparing to issue a subpoena for Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, accusing him of ignoring the panel’s demand for do ents related to Postal Service mail delays and contacts with White House officials or the Trump campaign.

Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) indicated Monday that DeJoy had refused to comply with a request for do ents she issued during his testimony to the committee last week,

House to subpoena postmaster general over mail delays

The House Oversight Committee intends to

    subpoena Postmaster General Louis DeJoy

for do ents about disruptions in mail delivery operations that are now central to questions over the ability to handle an onslaught of mail-in ballots expected for the November election.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., the committee chair, sent a memo Monday saying DeJoy blew past last week’s deadline to fully respond to the committee’s request for more information.

He has not provided any new materials, she said.

“It is clear that a subpoena has become necessary to further the Committee’s investigation and help inform potential legislative actions,” she said.

DeJoy, who was tapped to lead the agency in June,

started quickly initiating changes at a time when the agency was already straining under the COVID-19 crisis.

Reports of delays soon piled up.

Communities across the nation complained about widespread disruptions

in postal operations this summer as

blue mailboxes and sorting equipment were removed and

employees said changes in trucking operations and overtime hours left mail on the loading docks, undelivered.

The committee produced internal postal service data showing widespread summer service disruptions.

The panel also wants information about how DeJoy, who had no previous postal experience,

was selected for the job, as well as

any previously “undisclosed communication between Mr. DeJoy and the Trump campaign.”

    Eyup.

It is full on fascism at this point. They aren't really even trying to hide it at this point.

On June 5, 2020, in response to a request from the Senate Homeland and Governmental Affairs Committee as to whether USPS had a “concrete plan” to ensure necessary capacity to process voting by mail during the coronavirus pandemic, a senior USPS official wrote, “Yes, the Postal Service has the capacity to adjust our nationwide processing and delivery network to meet projected Election and Political Mail volume” during the pandemic, noting that USPS has “long-standing processes to align workforce to workload, including contingencies to respond to events like the COVID-19 pandemic” and “will continue to adjust staffing levels as needed to maintain its important role in our democratic process.”

The meaning could not be more clear: in May and early June, senior USPS officials were extremely confident in the agency’s ability to deliver all election mail accurately and on time.

Ten days later, Trump mega-donor Louis DeJoy became Postmaster General, and less than a month after that, the agency changed its tune. Internal USPS memos first revealed on July 13, show that the new Postmaster General announced new changes that would severely limit overtime.

On June 18, 2020, Democratic staff of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works wrote USPS to ask: “Is there a plan to mitigate this roundabout mail sorting for the purpose of Vote by Mail? Has such an effort been considered? Why or why not?”

USPS responded on July 1st that it “is not considering changing distribution plans for the purpose of Voting by Mail as doing so would introduce added risk to service and decreased levels of efficiency throughout the network.”

Honestly, how is Trump not taking more of a hit for this among the general public? It takes ing forever to get in the mail now. 2 or 3 people have mailed me and I'm still waiting on one case almost 10 days now

Yeah, but why isn't the public more outraged at them over this? I understand the partisanship hardcore people like leftists/liberals and trumpists staying in their lanes but among normal people who aren't ideological you'd think the mail being broken would at least pierce through.

People stopped protesting babies in cages. Turned the page.

I'm also surprised there's not more open love for the USPS, it's one of the greatest US ins utions.

The media has ADD and is incapable of sustaining coverage of something for more than a few weeks. The outrage was picking up momentum but the attention this was getting seemed to die down after the Dejoy House Testimony.

Democrats are also just a lot worse at sparking outrage than Republicans are. Republicans took Benghazi and managed to keep a bull nonstory in the news cycle for Obama’s entire 2nd term. Democrats can’t do the same with Trump and Dejoy sabotaging the USPS and making it so veterans don’t get prescriptions. They don’t know how to turn scandals into blunt instruments that get hammered over people’s head for months on end the way Republicans do.

For better and for worse, Republicans' contumeliousness to law will come to sharper focus, if only briefly, over congressional oversight of obvious misdeeds.

The big test will be Christmas for the USPS, if it survives the election.

Harvard Law Prof: USPS Failures Expose Cons utional Violations in Vote-By-Mail Laws of Several States

Citing to the 1974 U.S. Supreme Court case
O’Brien v Skinner, Tribe said that the

Equal Protection Clause “invalidates state rules that make arbitrary distinctions between voters who can get their absentee ballots counted and those who can’t.”

Thus, if two people in a state mail their ballots on the same day, one of those votes cannot be counted while the other is invalidated because they were delivered at different times.

the Cons ution requires that states enact postmark rules –

meaning all mail-in ballots must be dated and

cannot be invalidated if sent before the election deadline.

People need to ing mail their ballot early or drop it off personally, and Biden’s campaign needs to use the $324 million it just raised last month to make sure the base does that in important states. It’s that simple, don’t trust the USPS to get your ballot mailed 2 days before Election Day.
