This is sort of a silly argument that overlooks a number of things:

1) What kind of contact tracing did Texas do? None, AFAIK.

2) Texas didn't start doing relatively massive testing until the pandemic was well underway (think months). And yes, doing both testing and contact tracing early does matter, because you want to stop the spread early.

You can do all the testing you want, but if you can't do contact tracing, find the asymptomatic spreaders and isolate them, you're just not being very efficient in reducing the spread of the infection.

Now, I think it's a silly comparison too, because there's no way in you're going to get contact tracing done in Texas, so in those instances I think darwinism wins.

DMC can't see the difference between putting out a grease fire on your stove with the fire extinguisher vs just letting it spread to engulf the house and then having the fire department come have to empty a few thousand gallons through the firehose.

Sooo, three months later we are closing in on 200k, with what looks like a flat, steady fatality rate of about 1k/day for a sustained period.

300k by the end of the year makes for over a 10% increase in the death rate from one cause that was not there at the beginning of the year.

If every year you can tabulate the running average and then figure out how many deaths you have above or below that average, then every year would have a presumptive surplus/deficit of deaths. You said they didn't exist prior to 2020, meaning a whole new category was created just for COVID.
