Exactly. We live in a brutal world. If you can't defend your land then it's just borrowed -- meaning it's not really yours and can be taken away. That's the really cold hard reality.

A deal would stop the bleeding. I have a hard time seeing what would prevent Russia from invading at will regardless if NATO won't fight for Ukraine.
I wish there was a neutral news site that could give real news on what's happening there. Its obviously not going as well for the Russians as they would like, but I also don't think they are doing as badly as reported. I don't trust any of the news we are hearing. Russians appear to be doing pretty well in he east and south having taken several cities. Remember, it took the US 41 days to take Falluja and the opposition there wasn't nearly as numerous or well armed as the Ukranians so the Russians are obviously doing something right.

There are several good twitter threads that pass up on the propaganda. They have reached the same conclusion you have: Russia sucks, but is still slowly advancing.
I would disagree on the second point though. The Russians aren't really doing anything right. They are moving simply because they committed such a large force.
Military progress if often though of mimicking the physics of mass/motion and inertia. A very large mass moving slowly will have the same inertia/kinetic energy of a fast moving small one.
UKR is benefitting from all sorts of force multipliers. Ready pools of replacements/volunteers, a river of aid from the West and the best intel, communications, etc. that US/EU can provide.
The food, not the fuel may be the final nail that stops even that large body of troops. A tank that doesn't have fuel can easily be refueled an thrown back into operations but I suspect it won't be long will be until we see pictures of Russian soldiers who are literally starving.
