Ukraine Hopes the New IRIS-T Weapon System Will Protect it From Suicide Drones

Ukraine has deployed a weapons system so advanced that the country who makes it doesn’t even have one yet.


the IRIS-T, a medium range homing missile that Kyiv says is key to its defense.

The IRIS-T, or InfraRed Imaging System Tail/Thrust Vector-Controlled, is

a homing missile that uses infrared to lock onto a target and knock it out of the air.

The short-range missiles were originally designed to replace the Sidewinder, the air-to-air missile that recently destroyed a balloon over lake Huron.

The IRIS-T can be fired from a jet or the surface, and it’s this latter configuration that Kyiv is finding so beneficial to its defense against Russia.

“A few days ago, our air force commander said IRIS-T has hit 51 out of 51 targets, that's a 100% quota for Shahed drones and cruise missiles,”

The IRIS-T system was developed and manufactured by Germany.

Right now, Ukraine only has one launcher but Germany will send more.

The system is so new and advanced that Germany does not even own one itself,

it has purchased eight and is sending the first four to Ukraine as the manufacturer finishes them.

deploying 60-year-old T-62 main battle tanks.

Bakhmut is where Russia bleeds itself dry, while UKR generates forces, including integrating Western Tanks.

It may take on a symbolic importance at this point for UKR, but strategically it is letting UKR do Rope A Dope, part 2.

Reports from the mobilization suggest it went poorly, like everything else, with some mobiks literally wandering around for months looking for their units, and whole units not knowing who their commanders were.

Indications that Russia is trotting out 50's era APCs out of storage, joining their 60's era tanks, which is literally scraping the bottom of the barrel.

RUS artillery losses from tubes being worn out, accurate counter-battery fire, and ammo starvation means that UKR and RUS appear to be at parity when it comes to fire missions. RUS doctrine, if they have any at this point, requires superiority to really work.

I suspect that when UKR lets loose it will be fast once the first line of defense goes. RUS is building trenches willy-nilly behind the front lines and, oddly, along the crimean beaches.

UKR will have the benefit of knowing exactly where RUS units are or are not. between western SIGINT and their own recon drones, UKR high command probably has a better picture of their battlespace than any other country has ever had in modern warfare, US included.
