In 1930, the Ins ute had pioneered the first gender-affirming surgery in modern Europe. It’s director, Magnus Hirschfeld, had compiled the largest library of books and scientific papers on the LGBTQ spectrum in the world and was internationally recognized in the field of sexual and gender studies.
Being gay, lesbian, or trans was widely tolerated in Germany, at least in the big cities, when Hitler came to power on January 30, 1933, and the German community was his first explicit target. Within weeks, the Nazis began a campaign to demonize people — with especially vitriolic attacks on trans people — across German media.
German states put into law bans on gender-affirming care, drag shows, and any sort of “public display of deviance,” enforcing a long-moribund German law, Paragraph 175, first put into the nation’s penal code in 1871, that outlawed sexuality. Books and magazines telling stories of gay men and lesbians were removed from schools and libraries.
Thus, a mere five months after Hitler came to power, on May 6, 1933, Nazis showed up at the Ins ute and hauled over 20,000 books and manuscripts about gender and sexuality out in the street to burn, creating a massive bonfire.
It was the first major Nazi book-burning and was celebrated with newsreels played in theaters across the nation.
The Party leaders said, by burning books and literature about gay, lesbian, and trans people that dated back centuries and even millennia, they were consigning to the flames “the intellectual garbage of the past” and were “protecting Germany’s youth from deviance.”

In other words, there’s no need to invent an unlikely hypothesis (that being transgender has suddenly become “contagious”) to explain recent demographic trends when we know that a reduction in anti-trans stigma (and the increase in trans awareness and acceptance that results from it ) provides sufficient explanation.
