You ask this question like the spurs have a choice. Absent Wemby, and even probably with him, the spurs are going to be really bad next year.

Being bad is different from tanking.

If we don't get Wemby we riot.
If we do we party until it turns into a riot.

the Spurs will probably be pretty bad regardless, even more so without Wemby, so they wont need to "tank" imo

tbh, even if we end up with a rookie who makes a minimal first year contribution (say, a Thompson) I think there is a decent, yet less than 50%, chance we could be a play-in spot contender. The league is so terrible these days, it doesn't take a lot to find yourself in this range. Granted, I think we'll be immediately bounced rather than being a Lakers/Heat type play-in team, but I still think we aren't that far off from that caliber of team if we caught some breaks and slightly overachieved.

And once again, to be clear, this is not me stating we are good team

I was going to disagree with you, but you're right, the league sucks. Last year's Spurs team, as awful as they were, required some skilled tanking...err coaching, from Pop, otherwise they would have won 4 or 5 more games. Get those and add a handful more and next year's team could win 32+ games. Scary.

I think it would have been more than that. There were both questionable coaching and questionable health hold outs. I think the only legit injuries that should have caused players to miss time were Devin's meniscus, and Blake's MCL. Everything else was smoke and mirrors, IMHO. The Spurs turned their reputation for caution up to 11.
