Does McCarthy have any ideology beyond maintaining his standing as speaker? That’s pretty much all he has to show for the deals he’s cut so far - policy wise he’s accomplished nothing.

Pelosi set that precedent, Will, and everybody was Jake with it, so, he's just maintaining his standing as speaker till Pelosi re-assumes said speaker post.

Pelosi whipped votes for legislation she wanted and used things like her fundraising connections to exert power over her caucus. McCarthy is more or less settling whatever legislation will make it so he doesn’t get vacated as speaker.

I don’t see how the two are comparable.

Notably, Pelosi managed to squeak Obamacare out of the house in 2010 by convincing enough Dems in compe ive districts to vote for it knowing it’d lead to their electoral demise that year.

McCarthy wouldn't be able to pass partisan legislation as controversial as the ACA was (at the time).

They're not. She stood behind Trump and ripped up his State of the Union speech in front of the world.

But that's democracy after Trump set Hillary's top rung on that curb..."Now, say good night."

But only after we found out that a Nazi over there absconded with over a billion smack-a-roos. At least it wasn't our money we'd give the Nazi's. It's was the Ukrainian Nazi's tax money.

And she was barely able to do that because of 1 or 2 purple state caucus members. McCarthy has the MAGA s to deal with and there are near a dozen of them.

I'm actually surprised by the pragmatism. You don't see that from the GOP much these days.

There are 45 house members of the Freedom caucus and they with the rest of the far right pulled this same with Boehner. McCarthy did not want to end up like Boehner who let them play their game for a time.

This is significant from a policy standpoint that they can work together to prevent stupidity. When was the last time GOP brinksmanship was avoided internally like this?

Kevin McCarthy is confident that the votes to oust him aren't there. 100% of the Freedom Caucus isn't even on board with ousting Kevin.

Sure, they are only 1/4 of the House GOP. Having the government shut down and freaking people out for a couple years with it is what got Boehner canned. Gaetz's move like much of what he tries to do will be extremely unpopular.

Matt Gatez is playing with fire. If the results of the House Ethics Committee investigation of him are bad, then Kevin's allies and democrats might find the votes necessary to expel him from Congress. There is a lot of personal dislike of him there.

If Matt's attempt to remove Kevin from the Speakership fails and Matt is later expelled from Congress, he could then say it was just "political retribution" from the GOP to save face and that there was not actual substance to any of it. It would give him a talking point defense.

I feel like it's a game of political 3D Chess. It's crazy how things sometimes are there.

He's doing it because he was a spokesperson for the brinksmanship and he wants McCarthy's job. If his ethics inquiry goes south because there is evidence and witnesses against him he will lose much of his platform. What he says won't matter.

I read somewhere that he wants to be governor. He may already be eyeing the exit door.

That will be a separate bill and it will pass easily with bipartisan support.
