President Donald Trump brought an early end Thursday to the speculation around his favorite for the 2026 Florida governor’s race in a post on Truth Social, endorsing loyalist Rep. Byron Donalds for the job.

The president’s backing of Donalds is likely to have a chilling effect on the race in Florida, a state Trump won by 13 points in November and that he has called home since 2019. Trump over Truth Social urged Donalds to run and called him a “highly respected congressman” and a “TOTAL WINNER” who’d been “tested at the highest and most difficult levels.”

Trump made his choice for governor clear far before any candidate — including Donalds — stated his or her intention to run. The announcement also came as speculation has reached a fever pitch about whether Gov. Ron DeSantis’ wife, Florida first lady Casey DeSantis, would run for her husband's job and as the governor has been increasingly talking about his legacy.

“Looks like that's that,” one Ron DeSantis donor and supporter texted POLITICO upon seeing Trump’s social media post.

For being "from a country of concern"

This is DeSantis's pet conservative university

The New College of Florida has fired a Chinese language professor under a state law that restricts Florida’s public universities from hiring individuals they deem to be from “countries of concern”.

On Friday, Suncoast Searchlight reported the firing of Kevin Wang, a professor who has sought asylum in the US and is authorized to work in the country. According to the outlet, Wang had been teaching classes in Chinese language and culture for nearly two years when he was fired on 12 March.

According to his dismissal letter, which Suncoast Searchlight reviewed, the New College of Florida’s decision to terminate Wang’s contract was “not based on any misconduct and does not cons ute a dismissal for cause or disciplinary action”.

Instead, the college cited state law SB 846 which states that schools “may not accept any grant from or participate in any agreement with any college or university based in a foreign country of concern” without the approval from the board of governors, Suncoast Searchlight reports.

According to the law, the so-called “countries of concern” include China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela and Syria.

The law, which went into effect in July 2023, also prevents state universities from entering into partnerships with “any person who is domiciled in a foreign country of concern and is not a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States”.

Suncoast Searchlight reports that Wang, who was hired by the New College of Florida three weeks after the state law went into effect, said that before he came to the US in May 2022, he was a university professor in China.

“I faced political repression from the Chinese Communist Party for criticizing Xi Jinping and the CCP’s domestic and foreign policies, resulting in the loss of my teaching position and my freedom to teach, research, and express myself in China,” Wang told the outlet.

“I never expected to face such a distressing experience after escaping persecution from the CCP in China, only to encounter a somewhat similar situation at New College in the United States,” he added.

New College official arrested for flashing

    For the fourth time

A New College of Florida official and former spokesperson for Gov. Ron DeSantis faces multiple charges for exposing himself, according to reports.

Frederick Joseph Piccolo Jr., 47, was arrested Tuesday for exposure of sexual organs in Manatee County, jail records show.
He faces three similar charges from October in Sarasota County, according to records.

New College told ABC 7 that Piccolo, who served as the school’s director of media and marketing, was no longer employed there.
In his latest arrest, Piccolo exposed himself to a woman after asking her for directions while driving through the Lakewood Ranch County Club on March 28, WTSP reported. She picked him out as the suspect in a photo lineup.

He was previously accused of exposing himself to employees at stores in the University Town Center, including at Banana Republic on Aug. 22 and twice at Dillard’s on Sept. 3 and 4, reports said.
Piccolo previously served as communications director for DeSantis’ office, as well as for the Florida Speaker of the House.

bimetallism and state-issued currency in the 21st century...sort of

the freaky fringe is the Republican mainstream

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Tuesday that would recognize gold and silver as legal tender in the state, paving a path for Floridians to use the commodities in payment transactions.

The bill, HB 999, starts the process of allowing government or private en ies, such as businesses, to voluntarily accept gold and silver as a form of debt payment. The bill also outlines sales tax exemptions on the purchase of the precious metals if they meet the purity requirements or if the sale of the gold or silver exceeds $500.

HB 999 is set to go into effect on July 1, 2026, if the Florida Legislature ratifies the rules to implement the bill before then.

In a statement on X announcing the bill's signing, DeSantis said the move was to ensure the state's financial sovereignty.

"Florida stands firmly for freedom, economic self-determination, and resistance to government overreach," the governor said. "But for too long, outdated regulations and unnecessary sales taxes have made it impractical for Floridians to enter the gold and silver market."

Florida's recognition of the gold and silver follows in the footsteps of states like Utah, which implemented a law in 2011 to recognize gold and silver as legal tender and exempt coins from state taxes.

The Florida bill states that gold coins must have 99.5% purity and silver coins must have 99.9% purity to be recognized as legal tender.

The coins must also be stamped with their weight and purity, according to the bill.

Governmental en ies can also accept gold or silver but only in the form of electronic transfer, the bill states.

Vance, Rubio, DeSantis are all strong candidates for 2028

Who do the Democrats have who could realistically win? Whitmer, who else?? I think she'd beat Vance but good luck getting her through the primary.

DeSantis is looking vulnerable in Florida right now and was notably weak against Trump last year

Vance is doesn't reach 50% approval in the Rasmussen poll -- not super well liked on his own side

Rubio, Vaught and Miller are basically running the government for DJT. Rubio is the most viable politician in that group, but also most exposed to backlash. Rubio is also notably not very charismatic.

Three weak candidates imho, none of them having Trump's talismanic connection with money and success

Vance is actually a very mediocre candidate. Did I say that Vance was a strong candidate? Well, I was probably drinking.

If you look at the difference between Virginia in 2021 and 2025. It's eighteen percent. Was the environment responsible? To a small degree, sure, but candidate quality is everything. We complain in conservative circles about hemorrhaging female voters fighting feminazism and counterculture, and the gender gap and women's suffrage has never been a bigger problem, particularly younger, single females. The solution? Females go crazy for a very tall, dark, handsome man like Youngkin. It's just a fact. AND he has charisma.

I still like this ticket for 2028 against Newsom (likely Newsom - Whitmer imo, but he might mess up and pick Beshear or Wes Moore) though honestly the prospect of Youngkin - Rubio, Youngkin - DeSantis, or DeSantis - Youngkin are all tantalizingly electable tbh.

    Ditch Vance. He sucks.

    GOP plan is Vance/Rubio
As it stands, they have the backing of Trumps and the tech bros. Of course, the GOP has actual primaries so I suppose anything is possible, as Trump himself proved, but atm I don't see anyone of substance who can challenge that plan given the money they will have. Wildcard is Trump himself as he can throw anyone under the bus if it suits him

Dem plan is Jewbama/Buttplug or Whitmer. Jewbama preferring Whitmer but the party wanting Buttplug. Pretty strong ticket tbh but with some obvious weaknesses. Newsome doesn't want POTUS and is playing for a high level cabinet position according to sauces. Wildcard is the progressive wing (AOC) but I'm sure they'll fall in line like they always do with AOC being bought off with a cabinet position or Schumers seat.

Shapiro and Buttigieg are atrociously unelectable candidates. If they really want the far left pro-Mamdani base to not turn out, they'll nominate Shapiro. Does he even win Pennsylvania honestly as the POTUS nominee? His kind isn't popular at all and Buttigieg is slightly more palatable to the general electorate as VP than POTUS but still a huge liability to social conservatives and religious people who might be more neutral to left leaning economically.

Newsom doesn't want POTUS... are you mad? Did you not watch his victory speech last night after prop 50 passed?

Democrats should want Vance to be the nominee, barring some pipe dream like Marjorie Taylor Greene or Nikki Haley that would never happen. Even if Rubio is a strong and very electable VP choice, there's no question that Vance is a liability, has base issues and irritates women voters and a lot of moderates. Not as popular with the white working class as Trump given his Ivy League background. Not as popular with the right wing given his questionable faith and family choices.

I just think that he loses just enough support amongst both the base and suburban women compared to Trump that it puts a strong candidate like Newsom just narrowly over the edge, in PA, WI, maybe Georgia. Dems should be somewhat macro-bullish on Georgia more than the other swing states considering that state trended least back to Trump out of all the swing states vis-a-vis the national environment.

I really miss Will Hunting and his analysis. :'( him and I were like the Beltway Boys of the 1990s, him and I had the best S-tier civil socratic opposite-side civil political discourse
