That buy-out is basically nothing… but looks like we’ll have to make him the highest paid coach in the NBA to lure him away from UCONN. It tends to backfire when Pro Clubs make huge offers to college coaches, both in the NBA and the NFL.
Dan Hurley turned down 6 years - $70mil and stayed at UCONN for 6 years - $50mil.
Kentucky also offered $11mil per year.
He has said that he aspires to coach in the NBA one day… but later said as long as UCONN is having success, “the NBA won’t even be a thing for him”.
Apparently, he likes coaching kids because he can have more of an impact on them. I think that bodes well for us since PATFO cares more about their well-being than winning games.
Maybe if we have Castle, draft McNeeley, and possible trade for Clingan… he’ll want to come here.
Dan Hurley's contract with the University of Connecticut (UConn) includes a buyout structure if he leaves to coach at another Division I college program or in the NBA:
Division I college buyout
The buyout amount decreases each year, from $6 million in 2024–2025 to $1 million in 2028–2029, and there is no buyout after April 1, 2029.
NBA buyout
The buyout amount decreases each year, from $2 million in 2024–2025 to $1 million in 2026–2027, and there is no buyout after April 1, 2027.
That buy-out is basically nothing… but looks like we’ll have to make him the highest paid coach in the NBA to lure him away from UCONN. It tends to backfire when Pro Clubs make huge offers to college coaches, both in the NBA and the NFL.
at least thinking back to NFL... pete carroll was a success story. he flopped in the NFL first, then went to USC where he was a legend, then was a very good NFL coach.
jim harbaugh was very good in the NFL, then very good in college, now back in NFL
Not sure I fully believe the Wizards story with Mitch. They have 2 OKC guys running the show, hired their OKC guy as an assistant ready to go as head coach replacement, and that's what they did
This Johnson story sounds like typical favor trading between agents and media
Curious what those guys relative salaries were coming into the league as rookie HCs. I’m thinking of guys like Saban and Matt Ruhle who were lured with big contracts and then flopped.
i miss when pop sounded like that.
That's not who we are
i guess it’s serious if none of the players have even talked to him…
So you're telling me we should be rooting for UConn to flame out in the first round of the tournament.
What do you think of Brett?
I don’t remember if he sucked or not as a HC in Philly lol
I'd rather have Zach Collins coaching.
Brett should've been the tank commander.
Somebody that's not been associated with this show for at least the last 5 years.
I kind of agree in hoping that it won't be an in-house successor.
i'd pass.
(other than brent barry who i've vouched for half a decade, lol)
Hard to know what's going on with Pop. Part of me wonders if they are slow rolling his return to give Mitch some time to evaluate him as a HC.
That would be so irresponsible of the Spurs I can't imagine this nightmare scenario. As much for us fans than for Wemby
She's writting her name in NCAA books, found a great situation to build on and has been away from NBA for a while now.
As much as I love her, it wouldn't makes sense for either side in terms of timming
I'd love Ime or Bud, but neither seem accessible short term
1) Becky is a WNBA coach, not an NCAA coach.
2) She’s only been away from the NBA for 2 seasons and 10 games. She left at the end of the 2021-22 season.
3) The timing actually couldn’t be better because of the way the NBA and WNBA seasons stagger. It will be very difficult to hire Becky during the NBA off-season, as is customary, because WNBA training camp starts a couple of weeks after the end of the NBA regular season. This would be extremely disruptive for the Aces and I don’t think Becky is the kind of person to do them dirty like that. If there would ever be the “perfect” opportunity to Becky to take over here - it would be a situation like this with plenty of time for the Aces to find a replacement and give them a full off-season of preparation.
- My bad, mixed up acronym, I was just watching CFB
- I could be wrong, but she's compe ive and just lost the tilte, comes from Pop's school of long term building strategy etc. I'd love it personnally, I just wouldn't bet on it
- You're talking right now?? I thought we were talking next season. It seems even less realistic to me, unless Mitch really embarrasses himself to the point the national medias start talking about. It won't happen, they don't care or watch SA really, listening to the insane cliches they keep spitting daily + local medias are spineless
In regards to her compe iveness, I think that’s maybe part of why she’d leave the Aces to come to SA. Yes, winning WNBA les is great but I think she’d love to be the first female NBA coach and shove success down the league’s throat.
I think it will be a challenge for any team to try and hire her in the NBA off season, for the reason I mentioned. If they Spurs aren’t looking now, then I get it… but really from now until about February is the best opportunity the Spurs (or any team) would have to get her.
Sarcastic?
