    time for 5D chess guys

Jalen Johnson being out means there is now a stronger chance the hawks miss the playoffs. any thoughts of a cinderella run can be put to bed. this is a lost season for them.

with that being the case, tanking does them no good, as they dont own their pick. they also are projected to be above the cap. without cap space, without their first round pick, will be tough to make improvements.

their main incoming asset is a top 12 protected pick coming from sacto (huerter). as of right now, sacto's projected pick is #13. if sacramento trades fox, it makes it increasingly likely that the hawks will not get that pick this year either. therefore, the worst case scenario for ATL this year is for their season to go down the drain, winding up in the lottery, with the kings also trading fox and getting a better lotto pick, thereby not conveying to ATL

therefore, ATL trading Trae to SA, getting their picks back... allows them to completely bottom out this year and get their shot at Flagg, while also preventing Sacto from unloading Fox, and increasing the odds of them receiving the kings pick as well

the spurs entertain this publicly (or leak it to reporters via "sources"), and then we put Sacto in a position where they may have to lower their asking price for Fox, since the spurs now have options beyond simply waiting until 2026
It makes sense. The best case for SA though is report Trae is asking for a trade like Fox as well. It may not do too much to pick this year since we are half way through season already but it impacts swap and 27.

They are a fringe PO team with Trae and other guys and now it just got harder. Does Trae ask out because he wants to win and has a deal coming up like Fox where he will want to be all nba etc…

There is a path, like we saw with HOU, to give ATL picks back so they can tank IF SA is compensated for allowing this. Meaning they get equal picks back + sweetener.

If this means Trae gets to SAC then that’s enough comp for Fox straight up. So SA gets Fox, Kings get their guy in terms of value and SA should not have to give up anything else other than ATL picks in 25 & 27 then + matching salaries not including Sochan or Castle.

If Trae is getting traded I want him. He's a better player than Fox.

If SAC gets Trae instead of Fox they're a lot better.

Still can't see how ATL can finish lower than 10th, CHI will be tanking hard and at best PHI gets in the play-in

Philly has their path forward to the play in. I now think they'll end up better.

    The Spurs likely will, too.

I have doubts for anyone else. It would have to be Chicago and Brooklyn. The Nets have been somewhat compe ive. Actually Portland has been kind of feisty. Just that they're too far back probably.

I have no interest in Trae at that price and they probably have no interest without it...

Maybe Spurs could give Atl. pick plus a couple of Spurs best tank commanders for the injured Jalen Johnson. I’d do it but why would they?

Sixers now one win from tying Chicago for the #10 spot in the East. Both teams are eight games under .500, which is astounding. I now change my mind entirely with Jalen Johnson going down. I think Philly is definitely at least a play-in team and may even get into the top 6 with teams like Miami not entirely great.

Another win by PHI. They need Embiid back asap please. TOR is 8-2 last 10 and playing much better. As long as MIA doesnt fall off a cliff, then theres a chance both PHI and TOR can make things interesting if ATL really derails here

Now that JJ is out, I would refuse the Fox trade if it includes this Atl 2025 pick.

Trae is also dealing with a nagging hamstring issue too. Have to wonder if the Hawks will start to be more cautious with him now. The Hawks certainly have no incentive to tank, but I can’t seem the pushing their star player unnecessarily just to spite the Spurs either.

They get Sacramento's pick, which might not be far away from where they end up. And then get the Lakers'. They shouldn't freak out too much about their draft capital depending on where the lotto balls fall.

They don't have to get healthy. They'll push past the Bulls pretty easily and probably the Hawks.

We need the Bulls to somehow win a few games and for the Hawks to keep losing and Sixers to continue their good run of form..

According to the Locked On Hawks episode covering Johnson missing the season, the Hawks are -8.5 net rating without him on the court and +2.4 with him on. Devastating loss. Nearly an 11 point swing is harsh.

Ouch. -8.5 net is about a 27% Pythagorean win rate. That translates to a 9-26 or 10-25 record in their last 35 games, which would be 31-51 or 32-50 overall. In most seasons that is around the 8th or 9th worst record.

Even without Johnson it's hard to imagine the Hawks falling below the current bottom 7 though. The Hawks getting the 8th worst record, which gives a 26.2% of jumping into the top 4, is about the best realistic scenario right now.

The big picture is with the ATL free fall both PHI and CHI are firmly in play in contention. That gives them more incentive to win than SAS, who are unlikely to make the play in with a similar record.

Also let’s not forget the idea of trading up, for example package 11 pick from CHI and ours or the ATL pick in a two for one for a higher pick. Ideally leaving us with a top 4 pick and possibly two.

Barring a can’t say no trade, bringing in some top pick rookies while churning the bottom of the roster makes sense. Probably not a quick fix but adding two players of Castle’s caliber or better, even if rookies, would be legit.

I also think that there are plenty of later picks, possibly even the Spurs own SRP, that would be roster upgrades.
