The Golden State Warriors are expected to extend forward Jonathan Kuminga his $7.9-million qualifying offer before seeking a sign-and-trade this offseason, sources told The Athletic's Anthony Slater and Marcus Thompson II.
Kuminga is in the final season of his four-year, $24.85-million rookie deal and is scheduled to become a restricted free agent this summer.
The 22-year-old is coming off an up-and-down campaign. He averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 47 regular-season games. However, head coach Steve Kerr took Kuminga out of the rotation for the majority of the first round versus the Houston Rockets; Kuminga racked up four DNPs in Round 1 and played only 50 minutes in the seven-game series.
A hamstring injury to Steph Curry in Game 1 of the second round against the Minnesota Timberwolves gave the former lottery pick an opportunity for extended playing time. After a seven-point night in the first game, Kuminga rattled off 18-, 30-, 23-, and 26-point outings in the next four contests.
Kuminga said at the Warriors' season-ending media availability that he doesn't know what the future holds.
"I'm just grateful to be here," Kuminga said, according to ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk. "Still got a long summer to figure things out."
Kuminga added that he has a good relationship with Kerr despite their "ups and downs," per Youngmisuk.
"There are certainly things he has to improve on, but he's 22 years old," Warriors owner Joe Lacob told Slater and Thompson. "He's got a of a lot of potential, and I would think he would be a part of our future plans. Now we'll have to see how the market all shakes out. We have a lot of evaluating to do."
Lacob is a big supporter of Kuminga and was reportedly a persuasive influence in the organization's decision to draft him seventh overall in 2021.
The Warriors have $171 million in projected salary for next season with a first-apron threshold of $195.9 million, per ESPN's Bobby Marks. Most of that money is tied up in Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green.
Gary Payton II, Kevon Looney, Gui Santos, Quinten Post, Pat Spencer (restricted), and Kevin Knox are expected to hit the free-agent market this summer.

dumb ape wants clicks. rip off for 37 yo player who has only 2 years left
You're better off looking at Andrew Nembhard's brother. He's flashing some potential in the combine.
Isn't his brother really short 5'11" or something? I'm looking at Small Forwards, Power Forwards, Centers for the Spurs roster. I only mentioned Ron Harper Jr. as it seems he's a SF/PF (I thought he was a SG/PG like his father and younger brother), but I assume he's not very good since he's only played 11 games in 3 seasons.
You guys are all sleeping on Riley Minnix.
for good reason
Spurs will have a hard time fixing their forwards rotation with free agents. Naz Reid or Aldama will likely be out of reach with only the MLE and there are little left after them.
What could be fixed with a free agent is the backup C spot. Brook Lopez should likely go to a team where he ill be starter but there are few decent backup C who will hit free agency this summer. Clint Capela might be the best realistic target for Spurs MLE this summer.
Would they work out a sign-and-trade for Vassell, assuming Naz Reid wanted to come here?
Naz Reid FA situation is quite interesting.
With his great playoffs, Wolves priority should be to re-sign Randle. After that, re-signing Naz Reid will put them deep into the luxury tax.
Main question is how much luxury tax is Wolves' new ownership willing to pay?
If they aren't, Naz Reid will likely be on a new team next season:
- Nets and maybe Pistons will have some cap space to sign him as a FA.
- A S&T is a possibility but Wolves won't want to take back salary (so no to Vassell). Few teams have a trade exception big enough to make it work. Otherwise it has to be a complicate multi teams S&T.
- If nothing work, a lucky team team might get him on the cheap by offering him the full MLE.
Spurs could try to go after him with their MLE or could do a complicate multi teams S&T involving Branham, Wesley, one of Spurs' FA and a lot of second round picks.
That would have been the question 2-3 years ago. Now, the question is, are the Timbervolves willing to have a FRP seven years out pushed to the end of the first round, and embargoed from being traded to maintain a non-championship level squad?
They can let Naz Reid go. And get a shooter off the bench by offering a contract to Nadir Hifi who they seem to like a lot. On the other hand, I'm far from being a fan of Reid for the Spurs. He's not a true big, he's not a defender, he's a long three-point shooter who can run. Still useful, of course, for the Spurs, but it is not Reid who would fill the rebound problems.
Can’t read that ace it’s paid subscribers. Can you give us a preview? And by that I mean copy and paste the entire thing.
Paywall for me as well, here are things I found online:
Pistons are a good spot for those types of players. They'll probably end up with brook Lopez tbh.
Magic love their big players and clearly looking for shooting.
No Spurs rumors I see.
Re those DET rumors, wonder what that means for Duren?
After the Cade extension hit the 30% mark Pistons don’t really have workable cap space unless they make other moves. They’d have to renounce Hardaway, Beasley, Shroeder and trade someone else away for close to nothing to create meaningful space. It’s far more likely they’ll try the sign and trade route but this would be very complicated for Naz or Turner.
I'm curious how we handle our big man rotation. And I'm curious if we can find someone better than Biyombo. I sure hope so. But in Bismack's defense, he played a role we have sorely been missing for a backup up big in my opinion. Rebound, set screens, dunker spot basic stuff, block shots, not be an idiot etc. Honestly, I'm ok with one more year of him unless we make something happen.
Obviously we need upgrades but his role was helpful relatively speaking.
Kewl, could he now get a freaking rebound and stop “popping” on seemingly every PnR play? Turner has to be up there among the most frustrating players to watch.
He’s a pick and pop big, and he’s a career 36% shooter from long. Last year, he shot 40%. Any frustration on your part is your own fault because you don’t understand who he is as a player.
Nah, his career 3 point % is screwed by the good year he had this season. It looks like a lot of 33/34% seasons otherwise.
Also, imagine going into the tax on a big salary for a career 6 Rebs per game C?
