I've watched an awful lot of Lakers vs. Spurs battles in the past and I have never seen them use the de able Hack a Shaq! I always lost respect for teams that have to do that to win. Fortunately for the Spurs, the Suns coach is an idiot and played right into the spurs hands. Why take shaq out? He makes them when they count, I'm sure he could have given the spurs 1 out of 2, but even if he doesn't it allowed the suns to be back on defense. Taking Shaq out opened up the lane. Dumb move, imo

So what's up Spurs fans? Is this how you do it now?
Whats' up??? WE ARE WAITING FOR SHAQ, THAT'S ALL...

On the other hand, you actually are a Rockets fan that is too much of a bag to debate as a Rockets fan due to fear of getting owned, so you pose as a Laker fan. But you still get owned anyways, so I really don't get your reasoning for that...

Hack a Bowen may be next.
Stern would have to step in at that point & instruct both teams to cut the .
Bowen shoots 41% from the field and 65% from the FT line. Go ahead.

Pat Riley said it best. The league will definitely change the rules next season.

History repeating itself, fixed to reference the current playoffs

The reason they have that rule is that fouling someone off-the-ball looks foolish . . . Some of the funniest things I ever saw were players that used to chase [Shaq] like it was hide-and-seek. Shaq would run away from people, and the league changed the rule based on how silly that looked.

Egh I could care less whether we used hack a shaq to get the game within striking distance.

    1) If a team trades for Shaq they should know that the strategy will be used against them at least once in the playoffs. The fact that it caught the entire state of Phoenix off guard is laughable. Antoni looked like a fool with his pants around his ankles...He acted like that it never occurred to him that such a strategy would ever be used against his team ever. For that reason alone it was worth it.

    2) Shaq took himself out of the game by missing the free throws with one do over thrown in to boot.

    3) A lot of game was played after we fouled Shaq once in the fourth quarter. In fact 12 whole minutes were available in which Shaq played.

    4) off Lakers fans for being so myopic that you forgot employing the same tactic against Bruce Bowen.

    5) Shaq. His ego is big enough as it is.

-And stop with the HIV smack talk that's weak Spurs fans. Stay classy.
    Great points.

Talk about short memories. When Shaq was with Orlando, every EC team that really thought it had a chance in the playoffs typically carried 3-4 big men for the SPECIFIC PURPOSE of having more fouls to give Shaq.

Phil Jackson did it so much with the Bulls that NBC had a special graphic showing a three-headed composite Bulls' center. You think guys like Luc Longley or Austin Crosherre would have even made the league if they didn't need bodies to throw at Shaq?

Isn't winning in basketball, or in any other sport for that matter, about exposing the opposition's flaws?

If a guy can't shoot, give him a lot of room to shoot the ball. If a defender is skinny and/or small in the post, send a big in there to muscle his way to the basket. If a defender is too slow, get a quick guy to score on him. If a guy is complete at shooting freethrows (because he's too fat and lazy to put in the extra time), foul him and let him go to the line. Obviously, the idea is to gain an unfair advantage somehow.

All of this = exposing flaws of opposition and gaining an advantage.

Yes other teams have done this. Other non relevant teams and they have been ridiculed by it. We just laugh it off like its a joke, but you're the San Antonio Spurs, defending NBA champions! It goes beyond just a joke now. It's ing pathetic! Then you wonder why nobody respects the Spurs as NBA Champions. Go out and take it if you want it! The le is yours right now but don't stoop to the level of other Non relevant teams to get it!

Wilt Chamberlain and the off-the-ball foul rule
Chamberlain was such a great player and dominant force that he would be certain to be on the floor in late-game situations if the score was close. However, he was such a poor free throw shooter (51% over his career) that if the opposition needed to employ intentional fouling late in the game, Chamberlain would always be that team's target. Just as the opposition was eager to send Chamberlain to the free throw line because of his inep ude there, Chamberlain himself was reluctant to go for that same reason. This led to the spectacle of virtually an entire other contest being held away from the ball and almost completely outside of the basketball game being played, as Chamberlain essentially played a de facto game of tag with defenders, attempting to run from and dodge them as they chased him trying to foul him.
The NBA decided to address this undesirable situation by ins uting a new rule regarding off-the-ball fouls — that is, committing a personal foul against an offensive player who neither has the ball nor is making an effort to obtain it. The new rule stated that if the defensive team commits an off-the-ball foul within the last two minutes of the game, the offensive team would be allowed to keep possession of the ball after the awarding of either one or two free throws. Since the entire reason for employing intentional fouling as a strategy was to quickly terminate the offensive team's possession, this new rule, when in effect, forced the team using intentional fouling to foul only the offensive player who had the ball. This brought an end to the need for Chamberlain, or any other poor free throw shooter, to play "hide and seek" with opposing defenders in intentional fouling situations.
The reason they have that rule is that fouling someone off-the-ball looks foolish . . . Some of the funniest things I ever saw were players that used to chase [Wilt Chamberlain] like it was hide-and-seek. Wilt would run away from people, and the league changed the rule based on how silly that looked.

    Mark Heisler:
    NBA
Stern's penalty system is all fouled up

    April 23, 2008

If I were David Stern, I would have felt a cold shiver down my back last night.

Of course, as Stern would be the first to tell you, I'm not him, and I doubt that he shared my alarm at the sight of Washington's Brendan Haywood shoving Cleveland's LeBron James in mid-flight, earning a flagrant-two foul and probably for Haywood a suspension for at least Game 3 of their series.

Not that Stern has any use for such mayhem, but he thinks the current review procedure and its Draconian penalties -- more suspensions! -- works.

I'm here to tell you it doesn't.

If you want to see which it is, set your stopwatch to see how long it is before the next incident like this -- or worse.

Worse could be a melee, players leaving the bench and suspensions all around, like the one to Amare Stoudemire that effectively settled last spring's entire postseason with one ham-fisted judicial pronouncement.

Of course, worse could also be an actual fight or a riot too.

Even if NBA Vice President Stu Jackson treads more lightly (as opposed to last season when he suspended Kobe Bryant for hitting two defenders in his follow-through), the review procedure is still in effect.

Everyone still plays according to those rules. The Nuggets didn't say anything, but I'll bet they asked Jackson to review the play in which Anthony Carter bear-hugged Bryant in Game 1 and wound up getting hit in the eye.

Bryant said anything that happened was "purely unintentional," which makes sense, since it was Carter who grabbed him before they crashed into the basket standard.

Unfortunately, for better or worse, a replay is a little reality of its own.

ABC's replays showed nothing to indict Bryant, but if the league was to see that it showed his elbow hitting Carter -- a blow to the head, which is a major "point of emphasis" -- Kobe could well be suspended.

One thing the replay can't tell you is why something happened, whether Bryant was pure at heart or out to retaliate.

    Here's the real problem:

IT'S WAY PAST TIME TO TAKE ALL INTENTIONAL FOULING OUT OF THE GAME!

Forget selective, retroactive, video-driven enforcement with every team calling the league after every loss to see if they can get someone tossed out of the next game.

Forget this gradation of fouls, which can be merely hard, hack-a-Shaq (B-O-R-I-N-G!), flagrant one or flagrant two.

Penalize all intentional fouls -- anything that's not a play on the ball -- the same way, with two free throws and possession.

Hard fouls have been part of the NBA since the Lakers were in Minneapolis. The better the coach, the more likely it was that his first rule was "No layups, make them earn it at the foul line."

It's time for all that to end.

No basketball fan ever paid for a ticket to see one player grab another. It's not even violent, which has a perverse appeal. It just slows the game down, results in more (yawn) free throws and less action.

In the really bad news for all concerned, every collision at the hoop is a melee, fight, suspension or riot waiting to happen.

You've got to block and tackle in football. This is basketball or aspires to be.

If anyone on this thread is a dumbass, its YOU, butt pirate! I never referred to the "other" article....i was referring to you crying about Pop using the hack a shaq and saying that its pathetic...... now stay with me here....i dont wanna try and pull together too many ideas and boggle your mind......

Has Phil Jackson ever used the "hack-a-player"? Yes or no? in case youre too ashamed to answer, the answer is YES

Has Pop used "hack-a-player" (in this case shaq)? YES.....

so by my estimations, and by anyone who can follow simple logic, that would mean that they employ the same techniques and coaching tools to exploit a teams weakness.

So if youre going to lump Pop into some "horrible coaching idea" grouping, then you better turn around and lump your coach in there with him.

that doesnt make them any LESS of a coach. Grranted, it may be a part of the game that you dont like, but its similar in concept to a team that is down at the end of a game, by fouling and making it a free throw shooting game. that is EXACTLY what the spurs turned the game into. So what it was the 2nd qtr, so what it was done again in the 4th qtr. so what they did it while they were ahead, it doesnt matter! they were doing it to get ahead or get back in the game! either way, it was to win the game. While at the same time, it was a way for pop to bully d'antoni into taking one of his superstars out of the game and thus changing his coaching strategies.

Whatever you want to think about it, it helped the spurs win the game. so get over it already!

Hey, You! I got your she!

Nothing has been brought but the same over and over, Phil did it! Nellie did it! Blah, blah,...which has nothing to do with the spurs use of it. Hack a shaq in the first half, hack a shaq in the 3rd quarter while ahead, hack a shaq to get the other team out of rhythm,...blah, blah, blah,...phil and others used it in the 4th quarter while behind. That's no secret, you foul anybody at that point. The objective is to foul the worst freethrow shooter, if you can use the hack a shaq to foul them. Go for it! To do it in the 1st half and the 3rd quarter is just "GAY"! Everybody outside of Texas thinks so. It's no surprise though, after all you practice the Brokeback Mountain way of living there. Something Gay is right up your alley!
