    Very

Hey, don't laugh too much. Avery left your Mavs with a bunch of old end-of-the-bench type players too.

Thomas' re-signing, meanwhile, probably marks the end of the Robert Horry era in San Antonio. Unless he attracts interest elsewhere, it's likely to mean the end of a distinguished 16-year career for Horry, during which he earned seven NBA championship rings and established himself as one of the top role players in league history.

What ya bet that the Spurs advise Horry to stay in shape and not be surprised by a phone call in March.

What. So he can make a P.J. Brown-type arrival? No thanks.

So are the odds pointing at Finley for the last spot?
When Barry signed with Houston, that was a sign that Pop's still got a man crush on Fin.

    Completely underwhelming development.

Popovic should have the balls to develop younger players rather than relying on veterans who are in serious decline.

Maybe he's got a man crush on Fin's salary (as opposed to Bones').

Great news (especially for me after the Barnes let down). The Enforcer known as Kurt Thomas was born to be a Spur and will hopefully end his career helping them add to their legacy. Can't wait to see him back on the court learning the system for an entire season leading to the playoffs.

Yeah, it's too bad we couldn't have landed KT a bit earlier in his career.

I've thought the same thing for quite some time....especially with some of the other more questionable bigs we've brought in that have looked out of place in the team's system. After losing the b-ball IQ of a guy like Horry (in particular on the defensive end) it helps bringing back a guy who is almost equally as crafty in KT....that's something we were lacking at that position (as well as toughness) prior to the signing behind Tim.

Thomas for the next two years certainly softens the blow of Splitter deciding to stay in Europe. KT was not as effective as I thought he would be, but I think he was just getting settled in the offense.

The combo of Thomas and Oberto certainly won't blow anyone away, but I think together they bring solid defense and veteran savvy. What they don't bring is youth and athleticism...but I'm hoping a Mahinmi can help out with that.

Or it just means that Barry wanted more playing time and a bigger role than he was getting with the Spurs.

If Pop and RC were so high on bringing back Finley he'd be signed by now.

Right. Ain't that many teams interested in a 36 year old player whose stats and productivity has declined for five years and who wasn't a keeper for two other teams.

It's a mark of our desperation that we have to have him since we couldn't better our team at his position.

So, welcome back KT for another year at least.
This sums it right up. I can't believe this place is getting excited over signing Thomas. Like he was really going elsewhere. He is ok for limited minutes but he is just another slow, declining big who plays at a robotic pace.

It shows the desperation for anyone in the front court.

Thomas never really relied on his quickness in the first place and I'd expect his 15ft jumpshot to be more consistent next year as he learns the offense...so he could potentially improve from what he gave last year.

And while he's not the quickest guy in the world, he's a very savvy defender that uses his body well to keep the post player off-balance.

Even at 36, Thomas is no slouch.

Granted, there might not have been such a need for him if Splitter had crossed the pond, but if he chose to re-sign he might have ended up playing the most minutes of post not named Duncan anyways.

Spurs kept a good player in Thomas, who I expect to be better next season....a very good signing for this club.

Although it's true KT is getting "long in the tooth", so to speak, the decline he experiences moving forward at his position doesn't hurt as much as that of a serviceable guard or SF relying primarily on physical tools (quickness, leaping ability, etc.) that will fastly diminish with age to be productive on both sides of the ball. The main thing the Spurs need from him is rebounding (especially on the defensive end), solid defense (good post defense in particular), and that mid range elbow jumper that has always been in his arsenal. He'll fit in well here given a full season to get further acclamated and provide Ian with an invaluable learning buffer.

Jeff McDonald: With Thomas, Spurs get their wish

When the Spurs traded for Kurt Thomas in February, they did so hoping they could convince him to finish his career in San Antonio.

They appear to have accomplished that mission. The Spurs announced Tuesday afternoon they had re-signed the veteran forward-center to a new contract.

Financial terms of the deal are not yet available, but Thomas told the Express-News his new pact is good for the next two years.

"Every player in the league wants a little security," Thomas said by phone Tuesday from his home in the Dallas area. "It's been a goal of mine to play 15 years, and this will take me to my 15th season."

Thomas will be 36 by the time his 14th NBA season opens in October, so this could be the last pro contract he ever signs. Either way, he is happy to be spending the next two seasons in San Antonio.

Thomas averaged 4.9 points and 4.5 rebounds in 28 games after arriving from Seattle at last season's trade deadline. The Spurs, who considered him more vital to the team's run to the Western Conference Finals than his raw statistics would indicate, are happy to have him back.

"He's a pro," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. "He has great maturity and presence in the locker room, and winning a championship is important to him. When you combine those things, it's easy to understand why he's here."

Thomas spent most of the past three weeks gauging interest from other teams, most notably Miami and the Los Angeles Lakers. He said all along, however, his preferred destination was San Antonio.

"I really enjoyed the short time I was with the team last year," Thomas said. "I liked being around the guys, I liked playing for Pop, and the fans were great fans. I didn't really like the way things ended last year (short of the Finals), so I'm ready to get back and try and do better."

We signed him for 2 years.

Nobody but KT and the Spurs knows how much yet.

Although you are correct in stating that he has a set salary scale many things can happen (although not likely at all):

Spurs could renounce his rights and then he could receive more than the rookie scale contract.

Just because he is set to a standard scale of salary does not mean he has to be signed.
I didn't put any words in your mouth, they are right there on page 2.

    Thanks for playing
