oh well...we'll see....
theres someone on the wing....some...thing!....
My understanding is it's supposed to be how Kirk and Spock met at Starfleet Academy, and how they assembled the original crew. None of that was ever covered in The Original Series.

It's not a prequel, because it has to do with time travel, it launches a new timeline. (That way they can make more movies, and not have to worry about upsetting the original mythos)
Wait, seriously? This is Star Trek re-invented under James Cameron-esque sci-fi lite time travel anti-logic theory? So much blerg.
I wasn't thrilled with the idea of a prequel, but this is so much worse.
As long as it is the new one, and not Nic e Nichols of today.
RHEEE! RHEEEE!!!
Lame alert! Lame alert!
"Captain! I'm reading a massive cloud of shameless corporate greed off the port bow! It seems to be directed by a malevolent intelligence and heading towards us at warp speed!"
"Shields up, Evasive manuevers! Take us to course 1969 at maximum warp!"
"It's gaining on us sir!"
"Fire sentimental torpedos, maximum spread!"
"Firing.... no effect."
"Communications... get me William Shatner, perhaps he can tell us how to reason with this thing."
(to be continued)
I saw the trailer before Quantum of Solace and thought it looked bangin' except for the fact that all the characters look way too young. But if it's really a prequel to the original television series then that makes sense. These guys aren't ALL unknowns, it's just cheap talent... but this is a chance for them to ditch the characters they're usually typecast as.
I think it's laughable that George Takei's replacement is that from the Harold & Kumar movies, but I hope he proves me wrong and shows he has talent, unlike Ashton Kutcher when he tries to do a serious movie.
i think this thread needs to be moved to the geek zone
I like that people think they're not going to be campy despite John Cho (Harold and Kumar) as Sulu and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) as Mr. Scott.
Simon Pegg has definitely stated he's in it for comic relief. The trailer doesn't look like "Star Trek," at least as I've known it. Although the best entries in the series have definitely been darker films (Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, First Contact).
It's life, Jim, but not as we know it!
Okay so is the timeline going to be altered in the movie as part of the plot or is it a given that this is a different timeline?
Either case--we're basically looking at a remake. Which is rrrrrrrrrrrreal in gay.
I reserve judgement until I see the final product, but I love me some star trek.
And you know, I don't care if its all action. I love star trek action scenes, but its sad that no Star Trek Movie has ever done that as well as Wrath.
Oh. Translation: It will be a cubic parsec of space dung.
I hope they prove me wrong, but I suspect not.
Tyler Perry ... Starfleet Academy Chief
You also need some comedy or camp to keep the loyal minions from taking it too seriously. The ladies night scene in Terminator 3 is a good example.
Looks alright. They needed to reboot the franchise anyway. I half expected Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes gay sex borg plot for the next film. This will be much better.

A clean, full-sized version of the trailer is up on the film's web site:

I heard the reboot will introduce a planet of emo space vampires.
