I studied it for 5 years and I can speak it decently well, but I can't understand it. Native speakers of Spanish speak much too quickly for me.

Unless you services industry, or have friends down south, why would you learn Spanish? If you have such ancestry, that's one thing. The languages to learn in my opinion are those like Japanese, Chinese, Russian, German, etc. Languages that support a large enough economy to make use of for a job other than translating for illegals here in the USA.

    ^^^Pure class, as usual.

Spanish is a major world language by any reasonable measure. Third overall behind Mandarin and Hindustani by number of native speakers.

I live in Michigan. If I were to learn a language (which I will), it will be spanish.

I think I wrote aboutt his before, but I once had a business meeting between myself (english speaker), three Japanese men and a customer of mine (American). I would speak, the American would translate, the 3 Japanese men would converse, then one would respond to the American.

After the meeting I asked the American "I didnt know you spoke Japanese."

He laughed. He doesnt speak Japanese. He speaks English and Spanish. Just so happened one of the Japanese men spoke Spanish. So when I spoke, my American friend would translate in Spanish, then that man would relate it in Japanese. Then vice-versa back to me.

It worked out surprisingly well. But I'd like to eliminate the middle man next time.
