malik has no jumper he will be waived
Regarding the move, it's obviously a move to keep his rights over the summer. The Spurs aren't going to call him up and put him in the rotation. I haven't seen him play in a while so I can't really comment on how smart it is to ensure his rights.
I hope that the cut isn't Hairston. I know his outside shot needs work but the rest of his game looks solid. I'd much rather the Spurs keep Hairston in the fold than Williams.
Chump seems high on him but I still have my doubts.
Even if Marcus Williams is given the call up, I am very doubtful that he is allowed to do more than warm the bench. Pop is still the coach after all!

I have no doubt this is a protection signing. I'd be shocked if Williams played. But it'll be good to have him in camp. I think he could make a decent 3rd point. No joke. The big difference between now and, say, this time last year is that Williams projects into an NBA position. He didn't really project anywhere before.
From what I understand, the T-Wolves were interested in Marcus Williams. That's where the pressure was coming from.

I agree with the idea that we're just keeping his rights..
we should have a good number of young guys competing for spots on the roster this off-season..compe ion brings out the best..
How does that make sense given that Pop won't even play Hill?
If Marcus comes in, I doubt he does more than warm a bench spot and soak up some playoff atmosphere.

Williams playing point guard is an interesting development. I know he did a little of that both in high school and at Arizona. Perhaps that does give him a position to play in the NBA because prior to that, he was basically just a tiny power forward.

NICE - a UA wildcat. Watched him play a lot back in college and yea with his skills kind of tough to fit into a position...but none the less he does have skills. He never played pg at UA so i have no idea howd that work-but looks like hes putting up some nice number in the dleague- that trip double is damn good no matter where you are.
i really like maliks game but i havent seen much of williams.
malik can get to the rack, a trait not many spurs outside of tp and manu have

@ 92% he'll never fit in with a Pop coached team. Maybe the rest of the team can convince him to shoot at a 71.234% rate so he'll fit right in with the rest of the team.
Marcus proved his ability to bring up the ball against an aggressive fullcourt press for an entire half last week against Tulsa. His decision-making when he drives has improved also as he has developed a little floater to keep his layups from being blocked. His passing has been pretty impressive these past three months. I hope we keep Malik too, but I can't think of very many other players I would want to call up.

i was at saturdays Toros game. Williams played point for a while and he played at a much higher level than the other D-leaguers. The game came really easy to him. He played smart and saw the floor very well. Malik looked good to, you could tell he was focused on D every second that he played. His jumper was the same. Williams is intresting for the Spurs
I think it's a push, but I'd probably go with Hairston for his defensive ceiling. The wing is much more pressing priority than a 3rd point, imo. Williams was a revelation last week, though. If the Spurs could find a way to get them both in camp next season, they are the wiser for it.
Lost in this is that DeMarcus Williams would make a pretty decent Vaughn replacement too. He's looked solid. His measurements are basically Hill's...but his 3 point stroke is much better than I expected. I point this out because I think we're starting to see low hanging fruit on the branches of the Toros tree.
