The problem started when Carlisle and the Mavs decided that they won't leave our shooters open. They made that mistake early in the game and Fin, Mase and Bowen made a few and we got ourselves a decent lead. After that the Mavs just stayed home on the corners the rest of the way and challenged Duncan and TP to beat them inside. TP didn't have a great game and we didn't have too many answers on offense in the second half.

From that minute onwards, Bonner should have been nailed to the bench. I was shocked to see him in the second half, I have no idea what Pop was thinking. That's when they started scoring in the paint and shutting us out on the boards. I'd rather give those minutes to Gooden; playing alongside Duncan/Parker could help him get into some offensive rhythm than having to be the main offensive option in our bench lineup.

If you think a discard from the Raptors is going to be a starter on a championship team, this is what you get. He is a one-trick pony, you take away that trick and this is what happens.
Great post. It's very easy for opposing coaches to read and it is basically a one dimensional strategy. For instance, Dirk just mentioned on presser that since Bonner's out there they have to respect his three and that means Tim is the only big in the paint...etc.

I think Pop is just arrogant with the whole "stretch the defense with Bonner" strategy. Bonner is too one dimensional for it to work . If he had other assets, skills, it would work but all Bonner does is shoot threes and awkwardly defend without fundamentals and grit.
Bonner has no exceptional to adequate skills outside of his three ball. He doesn't even have a mid-range game where he can FAKE A THREE to beat someone off the dribble and to pull up from 20. He can't pass. And sure as can't out rebound anyone as tall as him. He is so bad he can't even clean up in the paint like flat footed Oberto was able to do around Duncan, Parker and Manu when he would make garbage points off put-backs and tip in's. He isn't in the right places at the right time like a high IQ Horry and Oberto would be to receive passes or keep the offense flowing.
His regular season stats are inflated from having to outrebound the occasional midgets teams. Pop is just a crazy man with this Bonner-Duncan strategy.

Bonner had a horrible game; there's no doubt about that. But I'll bump this thread later in this series when he gets 13 points and 5 rebounds on 3 of 5 three-point shooting and is a key part of a Spurs victory.
yeah, i'm sure he'll get one of those game this series.... but u know what, he's a ing starter!!! he should be getting those kind of stat line on a consistent basis, and when you are starting you should never put a stat line of 0 pts and 1 reb (and he's defense was non-existant, you could see whenever bonner comes in the game, the opponent just attack that match up.

was Bonner's flop on Erick ing Dampier in the post, the worst play of the year for the Spurs? I'd have to say yes..that was absolutely ridiculous..

When Dampier got the ball on the post I thought to myself, Bonner will this play and he'll get dunked on and he did even worst. He tryed the WORST flop all time. Even CP3 won't come close of that. It was PATHETIC.

And his D on Dirk in the play after that was just as bad.

heres a description of game 2:

1.despite criticism, despite all, pop starts bonner.

2.spurs come out agressive, end 1st up 7-10.

3.pop puts mason as PG. offnese dies. mavs come out in 2nd and cut lead to nothing by the half.

4.bonner starts 3rd, gooden, thomas, bowen do not. mavs go on run and take the lead after spurs go 3-4 minutes without a FG.

    5. in response to the mav's run, pop changes nothing. despite barea scoring run, Hill remains on the bench.

    6. 3 minutes left in 3rd, bowen, gooden, thomas come in. spurs fight back and tie it up, capped off with gooden dunk. gooden comes out and is sat.

    7. 4th quarter pop again starts bonner. no bowen, thomas. dirk, mavs go on run and go up 6.

    8. 7 min left in game, spurs down. finally parker is put in. still no hill. no bowen. barea contiunes to score.

    9. spurs lose by 8-10.

    10. bonner = 33 min, 3pts,3rb,5 fouls. meanwhile bowen+thomas+gooden = 25 min.
    geaorge hill = 0 min. barea = 20pts, 15 in 2nd half.

I'm in. Heck, Bonner shouldn't be comin' off the bench!! He isn't even a bench player with the numbers he's having as a starter. I wish Gooden or Thomas would be a starter over Bonner!! I wish Bonner wasn't even on our team. I'm mean sure he had some good games... but he just disappears after. And all he does is foul, and he doesn't even rebound much!! Bonner sucks!!!!!!

Zosa is coming after all you guys, he's a Bonner lover and gives me when I post that Bonner is mentally weak and shouldn't be playing as many minutes as he is, unless he earns it by hitting his shots.

Rick Carlisle and his assistant coaches are going to get hernias laughing so hard when they watch the game tape and see Pop putting Bonner back in time and time again.

Zosa is without a doubt a member of the Bonner family. Probably a brother or cousin.

this is just disgraceful, wtf is this performance 0 pts, 1 reb, and 3 fouls... man, its just looking like he's getting a free pass to be playing 20-30 min a nite since he knows the system better, regardless of his performance. man, as of now, i'm totally fine if pop just cut him out the rotation, which prolly won't happen.
    Bonner just flat out

    SUCKS
    !

    SUCKS!
    SUCKS!

    SUCKS!

    SUCKS!

    SUCKS!
    SUCKS!
I mean this guy Really, Really Sucks! He should be in the D-League but, for some reason Pop continues to start his sorry ass.

sorry, but 3 of 9 is average and Gooden's stats are still just as impressive. Bonner played better tonight, but I still don't see why he warrants more minutes than Gooden.

His defense was an order of magnitude better than Gooden's was. I've got no problem with them starting to compete for minutes going forward. If each of them plays at least as well as they did tonight, the Spurs will be the better for it.

i'm still for Gooden to get more minutes. Bonner should not be benched, when he's hitting the open 3's he's effective. But what if next outing he plays like the way he played in game 1? Then he's useless.

I'm not going to sit here and argue who should get more minutes. Both Bonner and Gooden are vital to the team.

If Finley plays the way he played in game 1, then he's useless. What if Duncan steps in front of a bus tomorrow? Bonner's a good player, and one of the best three point shooters in the league. Pulling him while he's sucking is fine, but worrying about how he might or might not play doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The thing is Pop should have the balls to limit Bonner's minutes when the guy is having an off night both in offense and defense. It sucks when Pop is somehow prioritizing that Bonner should always have the lion's share of minutes in his position even if he's not being effective.
