Pop will retire as head coach soon after Duncan retires. Pop has an appreciation that's there's a life out there other than basketball.

Let PJ be an assistant at any time. Bud IMHO, is the heir apparent. Spurs reward loyalty and he has more than payed his dues if another team doesn't try to nab him before.

AJ is a great emotional motivated passionate coach but his players eventually start to tune out and he becomes ineffective. A "Little General" goes a long way. If a Spurs coaching position, he'll need to realize this. It's a big weakness of AJ's. He ends up rubbing people the wrong way and alienating them and the team. When that happens, it's over. He's one Spur's player who never got over himself and for some that's not a bad thing either.

What gets lost here I think is that Spurs have had their finest decade because of same coaching/system continuity. Teams that play musical chairs with coaches never do well long term. That's why I favor Bud for the long term. I think RC and Mr. Holt understand this as well.

I, for one, like AJ...i just think he has an abrasive personality that people are only going to respect if he wins les. Pop couldnt continue to act the way he does and have players respect him if didnt have les to back it up with.

Nothing like an intelligent post to get people to see both sides. You're probably right - if AJ actually won les, I'm sure I would back off somewhat. I think it would still irritate me to listen to him, but I would probably still listen. And, yeah, some of the dry humor and charm of Pop's interviews might be overlooked if our record over the last 10 years looked like, say, the Clippers.

I can appreciate that other people like AJ. I personally think a lot of that is nostalgia, but there's nothing wrong with that either. If AJ became the Spurs' coach, they would be happy and people like me would be annoyed. That's the breaks. All I did was give my opinion, just like everyone else.

One thing I didn't mention before - I think AJ undermined and pissed on Don Nelson. And I happen to be a big Don Nelson fan. He's innovative, and unafraid, and he makes the game fun to watch. I think AJ was a treacherous little bas who didn't want to pay his dues as an assistant. And I thought that Nelson handled it with dignity, but he also made a point of showing AJ why he wasn't ready to be HC.

One thing I absolutely stand by - if you Photoshop some long hair onto a picture of Avery Johnson, he looks exactly like a troll doll.

    +1

I'd rather see continuity and stay within the same structure. I think working for the team for 14 years gives him a heads up on everybody.

You're team is in the midst of yet ANOTHER Marc Cuban Public Fiasco..and you STILL BLAME Avery with you've heard ...half truths and whispers and you're own perceptions become DOGMA? That's why you're city COWBOYS...RANGERS...MAVS...won't WIN ...

and as I've said before... Matters WHat Pop, Rc, Tim and Tony Say...

    Here is the proof

So assassinate a mans character with you're perceived half truths filtered through you're obtuse minds all you want

when it comes to character Reference I think Avery is GOOD with the Organization..

Furthermore, if Avery Doesn't interview for any opening coaching positions this summer..especially ORLANDO(yep Ron Jeremy is about to get the hook AGAIN..) Then its sure as that he is going to come back to the organization... with all you guys kicking and screaming...

    Way to step up!

AJ was just on ESPN and said that the Lakers were going to win Game 7 against the Rockets. And who did he say would be the key player, the big differenece maker for the Lakers? Wait for it... wait for it....

Yep... Paul Gasol. That's right folks, it's Paul's team now. I don't know how the other people on the show could keep a straight face.

One more thing I don't remember anyone saying in this discussion: I hope none of you favoring AJ as Pop's replacement are Tony Parker fans. Because I can just about guarantee you that after a year of working for AJ, Parker will be looking for a trade. And AJ will be lobbying to give it to him. Don't forget to stick that into your equation.
