AMEN!!! The nerwbies show up and the next thing you know is we have 500 new threads of 500 other threads where we've gone over the same stuff many times before. I don't know why they can't do just a smidgen of searching.

Apparently a lot of people don't understand how the Spurs system works..we need role playing shooters like Mason, he's one of the best shooters in the NBA..

the SF position should be our slasher..

Mason was clearly playing very well for us until the PG experiment..it wasn't a coincidence..

I remember one play where Mason tried to drive the lane, tripped over his own feet and sprawled headlong onto the floor. It demonstrated his problems with dribbing, driving, and lateral movement on defense.

So much for athleticism at the SG by Mason. He doesn't have it.

Jeez, touch-eee. Maybe you should wait until you have a few more posts on this board prior to telling others participating in this forum to off? It doesn't exactly make people want to listen to you (read your posts) when you start a thread of junk and then curse at those that actually respond. Just one man's opinion here. Oh, and I think George will have a go of splitting time between the back-up 1 and 2 this year with the option. He did just fine starting in place of Tony for that brief stint last year at the 1 (which wasn't even his position in school), so what makes you so sure he couldn't be a first option at the 2 (in which I assume he is far more comfortable playing) this year? After the earlier part of the season (and I suppose dependent on who is brought in) we'll see if he can be trusted with cracking a starting position. Pop has already vowed to play him more this coming season. But hey, you stay classy.

Tony Allen? You gotta be ing kidding. Guy can't shoot and infuriates Celts fans with his constant mental mistakes and poor shot selection.

We need an athletic upgrade at the swing spots, but Allen ain't it, and unless we get offered a much better player, I'd keep Mason. Guy is Spur through and through, and he is a very useful player as long as he can stick to his role.

OP, you are starting a lot of stupid threads, and that's not a wonderful way to start of at ST. Word to the wise, heed it.

Ginobili's injury screwed up the rotations. Mason was put into a position where he was asked to do things that he really wasn't suited for. But in his comfort zone he proved deadly and capable. Perhaps expectations were set too high. Mason is not a savior. But he is a very useful piece of the puzzle if used properly.

This trade idea is re ed.

Note: Since it's a new poster, I'm expecting a cheap shot about how the Suns suck. My response ahead of time:

Whether or not the Suns suck doesn't change the fact Tony Allen for Roger Mason would be re ed for the Spurs.

There's nothing wrong with Mason. Pop simply needs to allow him to do what he does best - spot up and shoot the ball. He's not a backup PG and shouldn't be forced into that role. It still puzzles me as to what Pop saw in Mason that had him salivating over the prospect of thrusting him into that role.

As for the SF position, that absence of said slasher is the problem.

my problem with Mason is that his defense just isn't that good. IMO the Spurs need to get back to concentrating on defense. That doesn't mean I think they should trade Mason for some piece of crap. I see him in the role Finley had in 2007. If he is forced to do more than that, he isn't good enough.

If the Spurs had an option at SF/PF who was a lockdown defender, without much offensive game, could they use that player? I think they could given that Bowen and Finley have often played the SF role, and neither can do anything but shoot open 3's.
