I think a better question is whether or not the Mavs can stop the LA frontcourt. And I'm gonna have to say no but I'll consider it a solid year when we make the WCF.
At least he has ACLs.

My guess is getting your bigs in foul trouble.
The loss of Ariza takes away the only guy who could really guard Parker on LA.
As you know Bynum has a tendency to foul a lot. With Blair's physical play and with guys like Parker, RJ, and Manu driving it in 24/7 I think Bynum is going to have a tough time staying in the game. W/out Ariza, Parker should have a much easier time getting to the rim and drawing some contact from LA's bigs.
As long as we can get Bynum outta there, I think we have a very good chance at beating the Lakers. Gasol doesn't worry me as much, him and Duncan match up pretty evenly. It's just Bynum that worries me since we don't really have anybody to match up with him.
The first answer to the OP's question will have to wait until Jan 12th.
+1
Plus were people expecting Duncan to come out the gates swinging? Timmy, Dice and Theo are the best defensive bigs the Spurs have. Yet all 3 will not be playing hard till the end of the season entering the playoffs. They're up there in age and with an 82 game schedule its best to save them till it actually matters. Offense is a given when you have scorers but team defense will take some work.
LOL at lakerfan expecting Spurs defense to be in top form at game 1 of the season.
It's gonna take months for Spurs D to develop into what it supposed to be. Not to mention Dyce and Timmy are not even playing at 50% form yet.
how can you post that with a straight face knowing your team let the Clippers score 92 pts??
Seems like ACLs are overrated.
Anyway Kobe is going to take him out soon enough.
The Spurs do look good. They modeled their team similiar to Orlando but they do have the one weakness in the frontcourt that the Lakers would be able to exploit. If Tim Duncan was the Duncan of old I would give them a chance but Duncan has declined and can no longer control the paint. I feel very comfortable with Bynum guarding Duncan one on one. The Lakers would just guard him one on one and let the auguably best perimeter defense in the league deal with the 3 point shooters.
Blair is good out of the Charles Barkley mode but he's too short to affect the Lakers front line. The Spurs would have to use Ratliff or Ian against the Lakers. That would weaken their offense.
It's a long season and if both are healthy should lead to a very entertaining playoff matchup.
Serious question, on paper, who has the best overall backcourt talent?
Back court wise, I think the Spurs have a lot of great scorers and shooters and they come in wave after wave but I'm not really digging the individual defense. Granted the Spurs play a team defense and it's still early in the season (1 game down) but if the defense can return to what it once was, I think the Spurs will be alright.
Anyway we'll see how the games play out.
Smack talk aside, I want all teams healthy. It seems like the healthiest elite team at the end of the season always wins the![]()
I think it will be about team defense more than out and out matchups. If the Spurs can get back to playing team D in vintage Spurs fashion they will be alright. The Lakers will still undoubtedly be able to exploit some matchups up front, but I think that will be offset by the depth of the Spurs bench. They Lakers are going to rely heavily on their starters in a playoff series while the Spurs will be able to play lots of players lots of minutes.
It will be interesting to see which will be the greater advantage.
Not even Bonner?
Well, I don't think there's a team that will be able to completely STOP LA's frontcourt. They are too long and good for that.
But with Duncan, Dice, Ratliff and Blair the Spurs should be able to hold their own - especially if you can try and get Bynum/Gasol into foul trouble on the other end of the court.
But I agree, it's way too early to really tell how the Spurs' D will look like.
Real 2009 NBA Finals: Spurs vs Lakers
Yeah, because tony parker would be leaving our point guards in the dust![]()
I can't tell what you're doing here...do you think you're going to easily guard Parker or are you being serious?![]()
Uh I'm serious. Don't I have any right to nitpick my team anymore?![]()
absolutely...I was curious because of the laughing after the comment.![]()
you gonna play 30+ minutes with that lineup?? so Kobe is gonna handle the Point and be the scorer AND post up?
dream on![]()
Wow, Lakerfan's already skurred after one game? This Spurs team must be better than I thought.
Our win last night wouldn't be complete without an insecure Laker fan thread.
First thing I thought too....and the insecurities begin...they haven't even gotten the plastic off the banner yet and they're already freaking out.
We're baaaaack.
Too early to tell, but the simple answer, is they are probably not going to be able to.
wow, and we are just 2 days into the season. this is going to be fun.
