So I will believe that nationally somewhere between 13 and 47% of Republicans are birthers.There's no way to be more exact until more exact polls are taken, but some number in the 20s or 30s doesn't seem completely outlandish.
If I was a Republican and somehow polled by these guys, I'd do one of two things:
- hang up the phone after a couple of questions.
- answer yes to everything just for the hicks. Is Obama a socialist? Yes. And a Stalinist. Has he born outside the US? Yes, he was nurtured by the North Korean government. And so on.
In any case, a poll published today by Gallup shows that a majority of Democrats have a positive image of socialism. Not sure what's so far-fetched that the leader of that party is a socialist.
So two of two things.
- You now speak for every self-identifying Republican who answers the phone.
- You are being defensive while claiming to not have a reason to be defensive.
All mights and mays.
Just commission some more polls.
It's mostly a semantics thing. The fact that I asked people to name political leaders they'd call socialists and the only names mentioned were François Mitterrand (a guy who governed 20 years ago) due to a misunderstanding about his political achievements and a crazy dictator like Chavez is quite telling, IMO.
So the board Republican consensus here is that when asked they answer Obama is a socialist but it's a crazy question they wouldn't answer.

I'm going to assume that for those in this board that disagree that Obama is a socialist, there aren't socialist leaders (at least since Miterrand made his neoliberal - cute word - turn almost 30 years ago). It's purely a platonic concept. That's why Obama is not a socialist.
