When you talk about Free Throws and Fouls, don't forget that there was a rule change (hand checking) that favored guards over big men as far as foul calling goes.

That's something that makes the Spurs' OFTA stat all the more impressive, as they've lead the league or basically been in the top-five (the exception being two years where they were sixth) every year since their first championship.

The rules change/point-of-emphasis has played its part in the decline, no doubt, but I don't think it's played as big a part as what I've already alluded to. Reason being, Tony and Manu would seem to be beneficiaries of such a rule; wouldn't the combination of their benefit and Tim's detriment balance out a little better (honest question)?

And does anyone remember, off hand, the exact changes and years each were implemented? I obviously remember the '06 point-of-emphasis that absolutely raped the Spurs against the Mavs and had the Heat do the same to Dallas in the Finals (karma's a ), but wasn't there one or two other changes prior?

    Thanks, Mel.

    • In the backcourt, there is no contact with hands and forearms by defenders. In the frontcourt, there is no contact with hands and forearms by defenders except below the free throw line extended in which case the defender may only use his forearm. In the post, neither the offensive player nor the defender is allowed to dislodge or displace a player who has legally obtained a position. Defender may not use his forearm, shoulder, hip or hand to reroute or hold-up an offensive player going from point A to point B or one who is attempting to come around a legal screen set by another offensive player. Slowing or impeding the progress of the screener by grabbing, clutching, holding “chucking” or “wrapping up” is prohibited.

    • New rules were introduced to curtail hand-checking, clarify blocking fouls and call defensive three seconds to open up the game.

Bonners 3pt Fg% is up to about 40.7% and Hill is at 39.5%. Considering Parker is now out its good to know that Hill and Bonner are gonna be able to spread the floor for Manu since he is the only creator for the spurs ( not that TP was a great setup guy anyway).

Yeah they're really going to be spreading the floor without the best guy on the team at breaking down defenses off the dribble. The quality of the three point attempts isn't going to go down at all.
