It's not exposure to violence and other things, it's the sterilization of them.

Back in the day, kids were exposed to a lot more violence than they are now, I think. More death by disease, fewer hospitals or sanitary surgeries to deal with wounds, killing animals that you helped raise to eat them, seeing butchery of animals up front, etc etc etc.

I think the difference is not the Victorian Era (or the Cold War Era or the 70's . . .) was less violent back in those halcyon days - I think that they saw the direct effects of violence and injury to the body, and were aware of how things could be.

Whereas today, there is so much remove from direct effects of real violence. We don't see our meat being butchered. We don't clean our own animals or scale our own fish. Most of our food comes ground up, precooked, ready to eat. We are shown unrealistic images of violence in the media (tv, games, movies) - with graphic displays, with unrealistic displays (being shot a hundred times and still moving, etc), with clean displays of violence (the bit of blood, for artistic effect). And people don't die as violently in front of us any longer. They go to hospitals and sometimes get better and sometimes don't. We vaccinate against a lot of horrible diseases, so the kids don't see them face on. And in our culture, there is plenty of clean food and water, so people don't die of starvation and food-borne illness.

So I don't think it's a stretch to say that this disconnect with the realities of what happens to the body when a violent action occurs is completely out of the question. And that is a result of modern living and conveniences - not exclusive to violence/sex/etc on tv, in movies and in video games.

from what i've read, the movie KickAss will expose kids to the affects of violence moreso than your normal hollywood action flick...

so maybe that's a good thing...

Do any of you guys play online, especially FPS's? I'm 32 and I'm blown away with what I hear from kids 12 and under spew out from their mouths at Adults.

"F***K you, I'm going to F'n kill you you Mother F**ker and rape your Mom. Along with ###### and other racial slurs". And the scary part this is the G rated version of what I hear. I no longer play online because of these kids.

When I was that age there was no way I or anyone I knew would talk like that to adults. Sadly respecting your elders is no longer practiced these days.

I agree with some posters here that are saying that Parents are such pussies these days. You wonder if they even care anymore. I see kids out in the public with their parents and it's hard to tell who is the kid and who is the parent.

You are not your kids best friend. You are their parent!

    Seriously.....

Do people really ing believe its modern society that causes kids to act like this bull ?

Paddles need to be allowed back in the principles office.

Corporal punishment needs to be enforced.

You didnt see this going on 20 years ago and it absolutely doesnt have to do with modern society except for the fact that parents are either too ing young or are too ing lenient with their dumbass kids.

All you have to do is walk into a Walmart at ANY time of the day and watch how people react to their children. It's ing insane what they let these bas kids get away with! It's no wonder the Earth is going to !

The problem is you look and judge these ed up kids and parents but think yours are perfect angels!

Do us non-child people a favor..... buy a 2x4.... drill some holes in it to get rid of drag... and beat the out of that little demon you think of as an angel.

Sincerely awaiting some PC bull reply about how I dont know anything about kids even though I watch 3 of them, not my own, twice a week.

Their parents are AMAZED why the kids dont with my and sit still when I tell them to...

    It's not ing magic people.

(BTW, the 3 kids I watch at times are children of some of my best friends,
they knew up front that I dont tolerate from brats, I have only had to spank any one of them maybe 3 times and parental concent was given. Never had to spank them since. In fact, they enjoy coming over and call me uncle and . I would die for them.)
do they know you have a gay brother???!!

So he would've gone crazy later on in life, rather than earlier.

Look, the great majority of kids can play games with no ill effect. Are there some kids who are f'ing psychotic? Sure. Just because they're psychotic about playing games doesn't mean it's the game's fault. I mean, what if his Dad said he couldn't go out with a girl and he did the same thing? Then we would've just been talking about what a psycho he is.

Games can certainly be addictive, and fill a void for people. Just don't take away my games because of it. Let parents decide whether or not their children does... and obviously, lock the door to your room after you make that decision!
ohh no, I LOVE video games. I oppose any unreasonable restrictions or censorships on video games.

I just support strict age limits on certain games or movies.

Out of 100 kids, maybe 5 will do something really horrible when they throw a fit, like this kid did.

but an innocent, unknowledgeable troubled kid throwing a fit = no murder

an informed, exposed kid throwing a fit = knows what to do

this is all I am getting at.

LASTLY, once the kid reaches adulthood safely, now maybe he never kills anyone, period. he's not a dumb kid anymore. there's always a chance.

Granted.... but are you going to sit there and pretend that children of that age, in that era, where just as violent as todays little brats?

If so, you are a moron.

Seriously.... Im 30 yrs old. Not old by any means... but old enough to remember getting the paddle in the 3rd grade back in 1986 or so from a principle without a parents consent.

If you never experienced that, you have no room to talk..... at all...
Got you beat by about 35 years, but when I was a kid, if you got in trouble and got your ass whipped in school, you could damn well bet you were going to get it again when you got home if your parents found out about it (and they always seemed to). But by god, kids pretty much behaved themselves in those days.
The day kid started raising was the day they made it a criminal offense to bust a kids ass in school. That's where it all started. And it's only gotten worse since then. I have even had friends of mine that told me their kid "threatened" to call the police on them if they didn't get their way. a bunch of PC, it's time to pull the old paddle out again in the schools.

    Good post. Interesting theory.

I think violence and the like have always been around. With more and more expanded media coverage, we hear about these stories more frequently and faster. Some of it might have to do with population explosions, but I think it's more media related.

20 years ago, maybe even 10, it's doubtful we hear about a son buthering his father in a small coastal town in Russia.

I think people read too much into it..

It sounds simple, but some people really are just crazy..most 14-year olds don't do this, but clearly there are some that do..I don't think any change of laws or the way parents punish their kids will change something like this..there will always be crazy people in every era, it doesn't matter how they're treated going up..I'm also against the pussified parenting of today's society(I'm still in my early 20's though), but I really don't see the difference it would make in this type of scenario..clearly this kid is troubled and a ing idiot..

As for this kid, he really isn't that young..14 year olds should be fully aware of the consequences of doing something like this, I don't buy the defense against it..I'd say once you're 10 years old or over, you should be fully aware of the consequences that come from these types of incidents..
