What was so bad about it? It's undoubtedly true that if Wooden wasn't a successful basketball coach, guys like Kareem and Walton wouldn't have really have had much respect for the other stuff he tried to teach.

The "Trojan horse" reference is pretty bad in my opinion. Wooden used basketball (something good or at the least not bad) to also achieve teaching young men life skills (also good). The Trojan horse was a perceived as a gift (good) but was a device to infiltrate Troy and sack it (very, very bad).

I think it was a horribly poor comparison to make.

The point of the metaphor was not good/bad valuations, it the idea that you do something thinking you're going to get one thing and instead somebody gives you something else that you wouldn't have otherwise taken.
