This thread is getting insane again.
ha. That's rich. You're a walking contradiction, fanboy.
This thread is getting insane again.
Opinions are fun? You've spewed opinions as justification this whole thread. I hope this is a joke.
I don't care if Apple Agrees.
It's not that it's old, it just sucks. I have my own music I enjoy at my finger tips and without commercials.Your argument was that FM radio is old, so by that reasoning it has no place in today's tech. And yet many standards for entertainment haven't changed since the 60s.
Well sure you can buy that much, but it can't be on your phone at all times. So, by that logic I'll just have all of my data on my computer and swap it as I please which is exactly what you'll have to do with an SD card - switch them out as you please.Yeah, that 8 GB swappable SD card that's included with the EVO sure doesn't store any music.I guess it sucks that I can buy (but am not limited to) 72 GB of memory for the same price you'd pay for 32 GB in the iPhone.
![]()
Yeah I thought about that but wanted to hear it for myself from an employee.
But it's *639#
FWIW, I loved being able to make the trek from class to my car, listening to the Ticket in Dallas on my Evo.
[shrug]
It's not worth anything, Fpoonsie..

Yeah, I figured.
I use the kickstand. I have used it a lot already. How is that being a sheeple? It's really nice to have in a phone with a display as large as the Evo.
Andat the "fanboy". Right. I guess that makes me a fanboy of Apple too, since my girlfriend said my phone was a little too large for her and I told her that the iPhone would be an excellent choice. I have stated in numerous places facts about the iPhone and advantages it has, as well as ways the keynote address was impressive. If I didn't have an Evo, I'd (probably) be buying the new iPhone.
I've stated facts, and the opinions I have I've attempted to show why I feel that way. As opposed to, "Lol FM Radio" that seems to be the standard of debating on Spurstalk.
You're criticizing the Evo for a feature that Apple has included in many of their devices. So the fact that it's absent from the iPhone means it's the lack of a feature that might be important to some people.I don't care if Apple Agrees.
So do I. But I also like NPR, I like sports radio. I like occasionally listening to bands and music that I haven't purchased yet, which Pandora is also good for. It's not that it's old, it just sucks. I have my own music I enjoy at my finger tips and without commercials.
Your logic is flawed. I can store as much on a single card as the top iPhone can hold. An extra card (32GB) of storage takes up maybe about the same space as half of a postage stamp and has my music on it already. So unless you have a media computer that you carry around with you in your back pocket, it's a distinct advantage to the swappable media here. You know, that's why they call it swappable, because you don't need an additional computer with a proprietary power source to access it.Well sure you can buy that much, but it can't be on your phone at all times. So, by that logic I'll just have all of my data on my computer and swap it as I please which is exactly what you'll have to do with an SD card - switch them out as you please.

Yep, I'm the fanboy.
If I AM a fanboy, at least I substantiate what I say with facts or some sort of competent argument.
If the iPhone only had a kickstand.![]()
Well, it's not included on the iPhone so clearly it's worthless.
I just HATE having the ability to use a kickstand... or to leave it in place if I never need it. Let me tell you, options are horrible to have as a consumer.
Oh hey what if I want to watch a Flash video? Not happening on the iPhone. Another product that's worthless because Steve says so.
I actually got pretty excited when I jumped onto ESPN.com and could actually WATCH the vids as opposed to the "Get Adobe Flash" logo I was used to w/ my iPhone.
Very cool.
Yeah, I thought it was a little trippy to watch recent Celtics-Lakers highlights on my phone from the native site.
If you're having problems loading any flash videos, download Skyfire. It's worked for 100% of the flash videos I've tried to watch so far.![]()
Thanks. Will do.
I don't want to argue with you, because I think your position is that both phones are very good phones and opinions are going to vary and there probably will be no clear "winner" between these two phones, but I do want to touch on some of the points you've made.
As fas as 4G, from what I've read in some instances Clearwire's 4G network isn't even as fast as Sprint's 3G network, and while Sprint has always been known for having better 3G coverage, AT&T has always been faster.
These are not impressive speeds in comparison with those achievable on AT&T’s HSPA 7.2 3G network and T-Mobile’s rapidly spreading HSPA+ 3G network. Will it be faster in the future, probably, but so will AT&T's network. In the end I formed some clear impressions about the EVO 4G and the Clearwire 4G network. I love the phone, but I’m disappointed in its network connection.
I think to say that a 4.3 inch display is better than a 3.5 inch display is certainly a matter of opinion. I owned a RAZR before I owned an iPhone, I'm not sure I'd like a phone that big, in fact I was happy to find that the iPhone 4 is the thinnest smartphone on the planet.
Having said that, there's always the quality over quan y argument, even though the screen is smaller, all I keep hearing about is how great it looks, and I don't hear anyone complaining that Apple didn't cram a 4.3 inch screen into the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4 also has a much higher resolution even though the screen is smaller. I don't know the technical side of the Retina display but all I hear are good things.
The screen is truly outrageous -- you basically cannot see pixels on it. We're not being hyperbolic when we say it's easily the best looking mobile phone screen we've ever laid eyes on.Tethering is cool, but part of what makes the iPhone so cool is that you can get a certain percent of the apps you need through the legitimate app store, and whatever else you need can be acquired through the illegitimate app stores (Cydia, etc). Between the two there isn't much you can't do with the iPhone (MyWi works great, I used it this weekend when the heavy storms knocked out my internet connection). Of course not everybody will jailbreak their iPhones, but it's always an option. There's a marked difference in the screens, even side-by-side with the EVO 4G
I don't know the tech specs of the EVO 4g's camera, other than the fact that it's 3MP's higher than the iPhone 4's camera, but again quality over quan y. The iPhone 4's camera uses a backlit sensor, the same type of technology that Sony uses with their Exmor R' back-illuminated sensors, which basically makes for incredible low light detail, which is one of the biggest complaints about the cameras on smartphones.
Expandable memory is certainly one of those things that will be a user preference, personally I'd rather get a 32GB iPhone and be done with it, although it would be nice if they offered a 64GB model (I just figured they would since the 3GS topped out at 32GB). What would I do if I got an EVO 4G? I don't think the 8GB would be enough, so I'd have to get another card, 32GB microSD cards are incredibly expensive, so I'd probably get two 16GB cards, which would add about 100.00 to the price before rebate of the EVO 4G of 299.99, which makes it 399.99, 100.00 more than the iPhone 4 32GB, in the end the price would be the same. So in the end it's a matter of preference, you wind up with an infinite amount of storage (As many microSD cards as you want) but wind up with your storage broken up in pieces (unless you hand over a couple bills for a 32GB card). Personally I'd rather just have 32GB built in and included in the purchase price, but I can respect those that would rather fiddle around with a few microSD cards.
FM radio is not a bad thing, personally I listen to Sirius and don't even have an FM antenna on my vehicle, but I won't complain at the prospect of having an additional feature. The thing that puzzles me is that the iPhone already has an FM chipset but for whatever reason Apple has never used it (Other than for Nike+ functionality).
A kickstand is no big deal, if you have to go out and buy memory for your EVO I can go buy a kickstand or a case with an integrated kickstand. (But I wouldn't because I have no desire for one)
Dual LED flash is nice, but it uses more battery and the EVO isn't doing so well in that department already. If the technology is half as good as EXMOR R Apple won't need an extra LED flash.
The video chat thing is really an AT&T issue, the phone is capable of doing it, and that's why I'd previously said the biggest problem for the iPhone is AT&T.
HDMI out is cool, but I could live without it. I'd rather utilize some type of streaming to get my movies and videos to my TV. (I don't need another wire to add to my list, and my HDMI ports are already pretty full)
Most of the cool features of the iPhone 4 were mentioned in response to the features of the EVO, but it also does 720P HD @ 30 FPS, but the coolest part is iMovie, which is very intuitive software anyone can use to make movies. (Because the EVO does 720P HD as well but at 24 FPS)
And, the gyroscope, which is going to be cool, especially in conjunction with all of the other sensors the iPhone has.
Also for some strange reason the EVO doesn't have 802.11N.
The iOS is also pretty cool, I've always liked how intuitive they make their hardware and software.

It's amazing how attempting objectivity in this forum ends up with me being called a fanboy. Meh. I didn't expect much else.
I've got 4G access as we speak, and let me tell you -- it flies. HD video streams with no problem. I can do HD streaming video while surfing the web and downloading music. It's pretty incredible. Right around 3-5 megs per second so far.As fas as 4G, from what I've read in some instances Clearwire's 4G network isn't even as fast as Sprint's 3G network, and while Sprint has always been known for having better 3G coverage, AT&T has always been faster.
The only problem I have with this statement is that AT&T's network has historically been extremely sketchy. As of 2 months ago, a friend who lives in Manhattan stated that she still couldn't make calls with regularity on her 3GS due to busy signal from the network or just no throughput to the towers at all. She has 4-5 bars and still can't make a call. Will it be faster in the future, probably, but so will AT&T's network.
Which is why I added the caveat that people who prefer a more compact phone will LOVE the iPhone. Personally, I used my Evo for about an hour in the store (just kicking around on the included programs, since it was activating) and when I went to the employee's Droid Incredible (3.7"), it felt absolutely cramped.I think to say that a 4.3 inch display is better than a 3.5 inch display is certainly a matter of opinion. I owned a RAZR before I owned an iPhone, I'm not sure I'd like a phone that big, in fact I was happy to find that the iPhone 4 is the thinnest smartphone on the planet.
It's worth noting that the dude that set my phone up was pretty critical of the Evo to start with, and after setting me up and using it for about 5-10 minutes, he said, "Damn... I gotta admit I'm a little jealous."
I have no doubt that the iPhone's display will be nothing short of brilliant. I still prefer the size, but that's me.Having said that, there's always the quality over quan y argument, even though the screen is smaller, all I keep hearing about is how great it looks, and I don't hear anyone complaining that Apple didn't cram a 4.3 inch screen into the iPhone 4. All I know is that $300 at the register, plus tax, plus a case and anything else you need means you're probably looking at $400+ dollars the day you bring your 32GB iPhone home, which is a pretty bad bite out of most people's paychecks. Undoubtedly some people (myself included when I got the 8GB 3G) will want more but won't be able to afford it when they go to buy the iPhone, and therefore they'll be locked in to a 16 GB phone for the next 18 months-2 years. I paid $183 (I had a $50 Best Buy card from the reservation) for my Evo after taxes and everything else, and walked out of the store.Expandable memory is certainly one of those things that will be a user preference, personally I'd rather get a 32GB iPhone and be done with it, although it would be nice if they offered a 64GB model (I just figured they would since the 3GS topped out at 32GB). Baffling. But listen to iPhone users talk and they'll claim they've never listened to FM radio in their lives. A testament to the awesome power of Apple's advertising.for whatever reason Apple has never used it (Other than for Nike+ functionality).
[QUOTE]A kickstand is no big deal, if you have to go out and buy memory for your EVO I can go buy a kickstand or a case with an integrated kickstand./QUOTE]
I believe at some point in this thread I stated that it wasn't a big deal. However, the fact that it's included is nice, instead of being limited to cases that include kickstands and therefore could be actually bulkier because of it.
I don't get the battery critique. I've used my Evo ALL DAY with no problems. I mean, I was on this thing probably 5 solid hours on Saturday, and then it spent another 10+ in standby. I got back with 10% remaining. Charging a phone at night is not a big deal to me.Dual LED flash is nice, but it uses more battery and the EVO isn't doing so well in that department already. If the technology is half as good as EXMOR R Apple won't need an extra LED flash.
The iPhone on Verizon's network would be frightening. The video chat thing is really an AT&T issue, the phone is capable of doing it, and that's why I'd previously said the biggest problem for the iPhone is AT&T.
It's just another one of those things that's nice to have as a feature, IMO. I can take a video of a sporting event or date out on the town, get home, plug it in to the TV, and watch. Not bad for being included.HDMI out is cool, but I could live without it. I'd rather utilize some type of streaming to get my movies and videos to my TV. (I don't need another wire to add to my list, and my HDMI ports are already pretty full)
Agree. We'll see how well that incorporates into the iPhone. I mentioned in the keynote post that I thought it was really cool. And, the gyroscope, which is going to be cool, especially in conjunction with all of the other sensors the iPhone has.
It is a bit of a strange omission, although I will say that if you have 4G, you probably won't need Wifi very frequently. Seriously, at least in the Silver Spring/DC area, 4G is blazing. Also for some strange reason the EVO doesn't have 802.11N.
Great points overall though, PM5K. Refreshing change of pace from most of this thread.
Yeah both are very nice phones. I'll go with the iPhone 4 because I already have AT&T for at least the next seven months or so, and with the iPhone 4 in particular for the same reasons I bought my first iPod a long time ago, because it's one of the most popular smartphones around there are a ton of accessories, and apps. Even when apps are made for more than one platform, they typically are made for the iPhone first. Also when people get to hacking things like emulators, the Android OS, and apps from Cydia, they put their resources behind the iPhone first because of the install base.
The reason I bought my first iPod was because there was only one MP3 player capable of being used with my integrated steering wheel audio controls on my vehicle, no company was willing to spend the money on R&D and production for any other MP3 player because they weren't as popular and the install base wasn't high enough to justify the expense, so in other words nobody else made that interface, and ever since then I've been using iPods and then the iPhone, and it's a big reason I continue to use them.
Just bought my new phone today. I'm pretty sure it's better than the Evo or the iPhone.
