Sometimes I wonder what's stopping the regular Joe Shmoe who follows the NBA closely from being a GM. When I look at the Suns giving Channing Frye a 5 year deal, my first thought is, "OK, I know that deal sucks and I would never offer it. Why can't I be a GM. Half these guys do way dumber stuff than I ever would."

One thing I think GMs do is that they get all concerned about their job security (let's admit, GM of a basketball team is a pretty sweet gig, you're at work 16 hours a day...but would any of use really consider it work to get paid big bucks to manage a basketball team?). If you're under pressure to improve the roster or keep it from getting worse (like one of your players hitting free agency), you make short-term moves instead of long-term moves so you don't get fired.

Beaubois advanced stats are pretty fantastic. His 61.7 TS% is insane. When you combine that with the fact that he's 22, and has only been playing non-FIBA ball for a year, it's not hard to see why any team would be excited to have him. Congrats on getting what looks like a steal with a late first round pick Mav fans.

tbh though I would have let Barea go if I were in the Mavs front office, or would be working hard to include him in a trade just on the odd chance Carlisle keeps playing him instead of Beaubois. Some players you have to rip out of coaches hands because they will keep playing them even though there are better players on the roster. In a totally unrelated story, the Spurs are most likely resigning Matt Bonner.

for the record, I don't agree with this. You trade a guy with potential for a proven player any day. If it's just DUST/Roddy for Joe Johnson, you gotta make that trade.

then some other chip has to be interpolated to match Joe's maximum, but I can't find anything meeting the demands from Mavs roster. You can't make a straight-up deal like DUST/Roddy for JJ because the combined salary of DUST and Roddy's would still be too small to match Joe after the latter signing maximum with Hawks. and I see no desparation for Joe to accept a salary cut to become a mav for any reason.
