I am proud of our Olympic team. Many of you seem to be disgusted with the team and even openly rooting against them. These men who chose to represent us, many of who are playing sick, playing injured, in front of a crowd that hates them for a country that doesn't love them. It's not the medals, there always more medals; the Olympic spirit is participation. So I don't care if they don't win all their games, I don't even care if they don't win any games, all I ask is that they represent us in a manner befitting the United States of America. Everything I've seen from this team has shown they have been more than equal to that task.

    So **** all of you.

I agree somewhat, but your view of the Olympics is too pure. Overall, the Olympics the way you see it is dead. It's just a battle to see who can hide their steroid use better.

Track and field is a bunch of juiced up athletes coached by people associated with illegal substances. Swimming and gymnastics are for females. And no one really cares about any other sport.

The Olympic idea was grand, but now its just a corrupt big business. Don't be so naive.

Yeah and the guy who won the hundred today has been previously suspended and is coached by the guy who gave drugs to Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery.

I basically agree with Ice although our team was put together badly.

TimVP, if they are all doing drugs then doesn't that mean they are all equal?
Guys 50 years ago would have done drugs too if they had them to do...ditto baseball...they still cheated back then.

They started doing cocaine and using strychnine at the Tour De France after it's 4th or 5th year of existence.

Athletes weren't any more altrusitic back then...they just didn't have as many options to cheat. And not all athletic comps lend themselves to steroid usage...some are undoubtedly clean fields of compe ion.

And if you can't enjoy the ultimate in sports compe ion...women's beach volleyball...then you aren't a real sportsfan.

Besides...I don't think anyone on our basketball team does steroids.

Whottt I'm saying the Olympics was pure around the time of its inception.

    P.S.

Isn't women's beech volleyball kind of a redundant phrase.

fat asses criticizing Olympic athletes. I have yet to see an Olympian criticize the Olympics. It doesn't matter what sport they represent or what gender they are, they are the best in the world and that is more than anyone on this board ( and 99.99% of the world ) can say. If you wanna , train for 4 years for a SHOT to make the Olympics, otherwise you're just another remote-control QB or swiimer or 100m sprinter.

Not all athletes are participating unclean. Sadly, the ones that do are the ones who get all the publicity.

Yeah, 'cause they're the ones that win.

It's the same thing in horseracing by the way. You're either dirty or a loser-take your pick.

I just don't see why you are so jaded about it...The Olympics are the original sporting event. The original World Series, the original Superbowl...it's the truest form of international compe ion, the way they hold them in various countries let's you get a birdseye view of other cultures that you might never get any other way.

All in all, I think the Olympics rule. I like the unique sporting events that really don't get much coverage at any other time...I am really enjoying this Olympiad in particular...it's cool they are doing them from Greece where the ancient and modern Olympics began.

And I think the Hoops team is going to come through with the gold when it is all said and done.

I am still confident that the U.S. can still get the gold. Although they lost to Lithuania honestly I think the U.S. played the better game. I think the U.S. beat themselves more than Lithuania did. The reason I say this is because the U.S. missed 22 Free Throws and also they committed too many fouls. If they were to face each other again I am confident that the U.S. will beat them.

What's wrong with criticizing the Olympics itself and the athletes? The reputations of the games and the individual athletes are supposed to give us a reason to pay heed to the endorsements of those athletes. Endorsements, of course, which make them quite wealthy.

I think we can say whatever we want.

Dude...no one is saying you can't criticize, its just that not everyone feels the need to.

Timvp is right. The Olympics are no longer the shining bastion of amateurism. Even without the drug scandals, the commercialism that IOC has d itself out to is enough. However, there are still plenty of good stories about the Olympics. Not necessarily in the sports we here in the US find popular and not necessarily American stories but good stories just the same. I have been watching a lot of the coverage and while I have been disappointed about the Mens's Basketball team, plenty of other athletes, US and otherwise, have tempered that disappointment and still made watching an enjoyable experience.

It's not about amateurism, but that wasn't Ice's original point.

It was that all the people bagging on Team USA should go screw themselves, which I agree with wholeheartedly.

I agree with you and Ice, Aggie. If they have USA on their uniform, they deserve our support. I was just adding that there are still many great things about the Olympics to enjoy.

I was looking at this post and thinking about the current team we are about to put at the WC. Obviously we have the best athletes in the world and could certainly win any 1 on 1 compe ion.

But, would we have better success just putting out one of the NBA teams? Would the Lakers, Celtics, or Spurs have a better chance of winning than a collection of US allstars?

The obvious issue is that teams that are multi-national, like say, The Spurs, Lakers, & Mavs would not be able to bring their whole squad. FIBA Rules are such that once a player plays for 1 country's Senior National Team, he can't play for any other team in a FIBA World event. How can the Spurs be whole if Parker plays for France, Ginobili plays for Argentina, & Duncan refuses to play FIBA Ball. Tim's case is compelling. He started in FIBA as a collegian and later on, The US Virgin Islands became it's own team. Tim couldn't play for his Actual home team because he had already represented the US. What would the Lakers do without Gasol, the Mavs without Nowitzki, the Suns without Nash?

Unless...if FIBA makes a tournament of Pro Basketball Leagues, the way FIFA does for Soccer in Champions League.

Then the other issue is that of how much basketball is too much? Should 1 team go through their own playoffs and then have to represent in a 2nd long tourney, that exposes the organization to greater risk of overuse injuries. Ask David Robinson about his back after the 96 Olympics.

    So no....that won't work OP.

It's hypothetical anyway but the Spurs were a bad example. How about the Celtics?
As to too much basketball, how would that be different than what is already going on? You still have to field a team that played a full 82 games season and most of the players had some playoff games.

Seriously, what's the point to dig through the forum to bring up 6 year old threads?

But to answer your question - yes I think the Celtics would have a shot since Lakers would have to play without Gasol, Spurs without Parker and Manu (and Bonner).

We're only a couple of weeks away from WC so I thought it was pretty relevant. I can't start new threads so I just grabbed this one to post my question. I guess my point was that it seems ridiculous and somewhat arrogant to just grab a bunch of players, throw them on the court, and assume they will win.

Dude, nobody cares about these posts from six years ago. All you're doing is junking up the forum because you already lost the privilege of starting your own threads. This isn't the solution.

Ok. Maybe you're right. I won't post anymore until we get closer to the start of the season.
