    Costly virtual border fence in tatters

    The U.S. is set to defund the troubled project.

    after an investment of more than $1 billion, may be a system with only 53 miles of unreliable coverage along the nearly 2,000-mile border.

    Boeing has charged the department more than $850 million since the project began in 2006.

    the virtual fence has yet to pass muster even in the 53-mile test area — two sections in Arizona that officials acknowledge won't be fully operational until 2013 — and the government's lack of interest in extending Boeing's contract, most do not expect the department to invest billions more in a project that has continually disappointed.

    Even as scrutiny of the program has increased in the last year, Boeing has not provided accurate information on the progress of the program, according to a U.S. Government Accountability Office report released Oct. 18. The study found an unusually high number of errors in the data Boeing gave to the Homeland Security Department.

    Trouble with the invisible fence began in the design phase, when the Homeland Security Department set demands for the technology that surpassed what was available at the time. The department required, for example, that the system help Border Patrol agents be in position to apprehend 90% of the incursions over the border, but the technology has achieved only a fraction of that goal.

    ============

    Does the contract say that Boeing must refund all the money if the lemon vehicle won't start? nah. Boeing is a big MIC contractor, owns lots of legislators.

    a 9-figure government no-bid contract was squandered and stolen by its contractor, and no one will ever investigate or give a in any way that matters.

    There isn't enough information to consider here. They pulled the plug on all but the 53 miles, but probably didn't realize that does nothing for the research and development costs.

    I think there was very little R&D, just installation and hooking off-the-shelf stuff up.

    If the government gave a about stopping illegal immigration, they'd throw employers in prison for employing them.

    The Feds are pro-business. Business make $Bs under-paying and exploiting, sometimes not paying, illegal immigrants.

    The Repugs and tea baggers screaming about immigration is nothing but campaigning. They'll do all about if elected, like they did all about it 200-2008.

    Pretty much. This country is all about subsidizing agriculture. Could you imagine how much better the quality of beef in this country would be if the packers had to hire Americans? Americans who wouldn't stand for only having seconds to cut stomachs from each carcass, thereby ensuring less is spilled into the meat?

    Seems like machine gun nests are far cheaper and much more reliable.

    I wonder what it would be like if they hired true Scotsmen?

    Agreed. We don't need a fence. We just need to make it impractical for them to be here. But since there is no one solution the government will do to act upon their cons utional mandate, we need to press them on all aspects.

    And it's one reason why the republicans lost the majority. They stopped listening to their voters.
