Manu’s absence puts onus on bench
    Jeff McDonald

...Before the series is over, the Spurs’ championship-ringed triumvirate of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and (eventually) Ginobili, will have its say. As the Spurs open pursuit of their fifth NBA le, however, they also will need role players — like Neal — to rise to the occasion.

“Oftentimes, it’s those other guys coming off the bench that make the differences to win one playoff game here or there,” coach Gregg Popovich said.

...“In the playoffs, the intensity level picks up, the pressure picks up,” Popovich said. “Some individuals don’t do as well in that area. Other people step up.”

Memphis’ Battier knows AT&T Center noise
    Mike Monroe

...“My very first memory is running out of the tunnel at AT&T Center, having a wall of noise blast me and thinking, ‘So this is what they meant when they were telling us how different things are in the playoffs,’?” said Battier, who arrived with his Memphis Grizzlies on Friday to prepare for the team’s first-round playoff series against the Spurs.

Usually the eighth seed in the NBA playoffs rarely pull the upset and defeat the number one ranked team. There are exceptions such as the 2007 eighth seeded Golden State Warriors defeating the number one seeded Dallas Mavericks but will the eighth seeded Memphis Grizzlies shock the world and defeat the number one ranked San Antonio Spurs?

The Grizzlies believe they can and think the Spurs are a good matchup for them.

"We feel pretty confident about it," said Grizzlies forward Darrell Arthur. "I think it's a good matchup for us."

Arthur: "I feel like we can win a series."

Mike Conley: "There's no reason we can't play the Spurs and we can't beat the Spurs."

Look I can appreciate the Grizzlies confidence. Memphis has to go into a series with the right mentality and it's no surprise they feel they can win the series. They tested the Spurs in the regular season, went toe-to-toe versus the Spurs, and split the season-series with the Spurs. All this without their star Rudy Gay.

Grizzlies back looking for 1st playoff victory

Before the Memphis Grizzlies can think about winning a playoff series, they first have to take one small step.

    Win a postseason game.

The Grizzlies enter their series against the San Antonio Spurs with the dubious record of being swept out of the first round in all three of their previous playoff appearances.

At 0-12, it’s some heavy baggage. Depending on which Memphis player is answering the question, it is a record that can be tough to ignore.

“We’re very aware of it,” guard Tony Allen said after practice Friday. “They have been ranting about it all year. We’ve gotten our short-term goal (making the playoffs) out of the way, and now it’s time to make some noise in this postseason.”

To do that, Memphis will have to beat a Spurs team that finished with the second-best record in the league.

San Antonio, the top seed in the Western Conference, hosts the eighth-seeded Grizzlies for the first two games starting Sunday before the series moves back to Memphis for Games 3 and 4.

The Grizzlies hope they get a second look at the city of San Antonio this series because that means they will have accomplished the goal of winning a playoff game, something this franchise has yet to do in making the postseason three straight seasons starting in 2004.

The Spurs were the first team to sweep the Grizzlies out of the postseason in 2004, and the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks followed the next two postseasons in needing only four games to advance to the conference semifinals. It’s not the kind of mark any NBA team wants.

McDyess says if Manu doesn't play, it will be because docs/pop holds him out.
Parker: "I'm sure he's going to play." ... "almost impossible he's not going to play."
Tony Parker for one expects Manu to play. #notadoctor
Btw, regarding earlier tweet, manu drained six straight threes during aforementioned drill.
Pop still calls Manu doubtful for Game 1. Won't even cop to "game-time decision."
Watching Manu take threes with big robo cop pad on right elbow.

    NBA Playoffs: Western Conference capsules
    USA Today

No. 1 San Antonio Spurs (61-21) vs. No. 8 Memphis Grizzlies (46-36)

The skinny: The Grizzlies aren't good passers but make up for it on defense (first in steals). A fast pace will help Spurs PG Tony Parker vs. slow-moving Grizzlies C Marc Gasol and Randolph, who don't defend the pick-and-roll well. The Spurs aren't as good at rebounding and rely on perimeter shots rather than Duncan post-ups.

    Prediction: Memphis 4-3

Tony Allen compared regular season to 82 short quizzes. "This is the big test."

Allen on Mem alleged "tanking": "I don't know nothing about that." Said knee was sore. Showed off new brace.
Lionel Hollins: "Ginobili is going to play in this series. I believe he's going to play tomorrow."
One guy who knows Indiana George Hill? Fellow Indy guy Mike Conley: "He was just a lethal scorer."
Hollins opened presser assuring Tim Duncan he didn't tank last two games. Yes. He seriously did.

Griz coach Hollins: ‘Tim, we didn’t choose to play Spurs’
    Mike Monroe

...“I just want to say this for Tim Duncan: We did not tank the season so we can get the San Antonio Spurs,” Hollins said. “In fact, my thought process had nothing to do with the San Antonio Spurs. It had to do with us being healthy coming into this series, whatever series it was going to be. I was only concerned about our health.

“I think Tim needed some motivation or something but if I had a choice of teams this definitely wouldn’t have been it. I would have taken Houston or something like that, that’s not in the playoffs.

“It was going to be one of those three teams that have been good all season long.

I just want Tim to know that. Tim, we weren’t seeking you out.”
    He scared.
