You guys are too funny. Reading all the doomsday threads/posts always gives me a good laugh.

Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph annihilated us, and we were still up 4 with one minute to play without our best player, and our second best having a horrible night from the field, and our third best not scoring a point the last 21 minutes of the game (best in terms of offense).

Anyone who wants to bet whether or not the Spurs win this series, let me know. I thought last night was VERY encouraging. We hustled our ass off and played with great energy. RJ said it best, there were three big shots down the stretch, and Shane was the only one who hit his. RJ and George had great looks that I personally would love them to take any day of the week.

spurs need to drive to the basket more as well. get their bigs in foul trouble. the coaches know the grizz are gonna keep their guys in no matter the cost of fouling out or not. if we can get gasol and randolph outta the game it will open the lane and let tp, jefferson, blair, manu etc.. to abuse the lane. i think it was maybe mayo that was guarding tony, dude got beat every time tony drove the lane. i dont under stand why we stopped what worked. once they get in the frame of mind that we are gonna drive the lane and start clogging it up thats when we need to start kickin out to three point line and start bombing from the arc. that would totally disrupt their defense and keep them confused.

I guess what most people were concerned about is the fact that it was a home game, and that we gave it up. "A loss is a loss no matter how close" etc. I, too, think this series will be a relatively rapid spurs victory. But the fact that it got off to such an ugly start is slightly discouraging

All you say is true but still the bottom line we do not appear to have a coach willing to accept the obvious and make adjustments as the Grizz when it counted annihilated the Spurs inside, our guards and coach made brain dead decisions* and the Spurs stopped going inside.

*with the right lineups this game would not have been close and SAS would be up 1-0

Teams that win game one win about 3/4s of the series. Spurs can still win but fans deserve to be in a panic for one reason and one reason only = Popovich.

Finally our best player when it counts is still Duncan and he played fairly well but got no help and the coach did not demand he get the ball more in the 4th that also is a shame.

Bonner had a great defensive game.

I guess we do need RMJ.

Splitter is not a good one-on-one defender, by the way. Countless times I've seen him get annihilated on the low block by big men. He is an excellent help defender/PnR defender, but he is pretty useless in this series because he would be assigned to ZR, who would just feast on him. Bonner brings too much offensively in this series because he's gonna be wide open a ton. This is not a good series for Tiago to play in.

Game one was more alarming than it was encouraging. I still think the Spurs win this series, but I'm not as confident as I was last year against the Mavs. I knew the Mavs had nothing on the Spurs (no overwhelming size advantage, dominant rebounding, athleticism, go-to perimeter player, etc.). This Grizzlies team has an advantage that isn't going to go away just because the Spurs are suddenly going to have a heightened sense of urgency. And on top of that, they're confident. They genuinely believe they can beat this team, which is always half the battle in a match-up like this. They're somewhat like the Suns last season in that they've caught lightning in a bottle and are playing to their absolute peak. You put those three things together and add the fact that the Spurs have been struggling for a while (you'd have to go back to the last Mavs game to find their last quality win) and you've got the makings for an upset. I'm not saying it'll happen, but the necessary ingredients are in place.

Thanks for the analysis, Chazley, or should I call you Mr. Bonner?

For every advantage the Grizzles have on us down low, we have as much if not more of an advantage at PG/SG/SF. Their size advantage is being WAYYYY overblown. We are not going to lose this series... they shot 15% better than us, only had 5 offensive rebounds, and we STILL were up 4 with about a minute to go. There's so many things that went wrong for the Spurs in game 1 that if we correct half of them we will win game 2 by 10+.

That's just it. What are the odds the Spurs hold them to five offensive rebounds per game? The Grizzlies are not going to shoot 55% from the field for the series, but like I said, look at the Spurs defensive field goal percentage in the past six weeks or so. Don't be surprised if the Grizzlies shoot close to 50% in this series.

The logic of "if we correct half of what wrong last game in the next game, we'll be in great shape", is flawed, because it presumes next game will be just as the last. But it won't. It doesn't work that way. Who knows, maybe next game turnovers will be a problem, or rebounding, or whatever.

There is certainly cause for concern. Grizzlies rank 1st in steals/game (9), forced TOs/game (17), points in the paint/game (51) and 1st in OR/game (13).

We knew this going in. None of those stats matter in the playoffs though.

Last night? The game Was at one here ET! Hustled, that must have been Bonner since you said hustled their asses off!

Anyways they had that damn game won up 4 with one min or so left and blew it, this has been what they do lately and yes that is a cause for concern there! I think they will win the series yes, but damn ANOTHER blown game for them which seems to be them as of late! Almost won then just lose it.
