Spurs lead assistant Mike Budenholzer is among the leading candidates to fill the vacant Houston position created Monday when Rick Adelman wasn’t rehired for the job.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Budenholzer is among those being considered for the job, which was created when Adelman’s contract wasn’t renewed after four seasons with the team.

Other potential candidates who have been affiliated with the Spurs include former Cleveland coach and San Antonio assistant Mike Brown, former Spurs player and assistant Mario Elie and former Spurs coach Larry Brown.

Budenholzer was interviewed in Phoenix when the Suns hired Terry Porter. Considering the success of first-year Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau with no previous head coaching experience, it could be a boon for Budenholzer’s chances somewhere.

Or then, there’s that likely opportunity to become the eventual successor to Gregg Popovich one of these days.

Great. That's all we need is to lose another solid assistant to a team that's not going anywhere, but great for Bud if it happens.

I'd expect Bud to always be a candidate for any vacant coaching position.

agreed ... last season he did some fine things when Pop was ejected (like hack-a-Dwight), but by not playing Splitter Coach Bud showed we can do as good or bad without him

    Good in riddance....

His first move when he took over for Pop in a game was to insert Matt Bonner...

...also...if he had a pair of balls...he would have reminded Pop of how well Splitter plays against bigs...whenever Splitter is given minutes....but obviously...going by Pop's answer the other day when asked if Splitter would play...("I haven't given it any thought") Budenholzer or anyone else on the coaching staff has any balls...

    him.

One less "yes man" wouldn't be a bad thing for this team.

Good luck to him either way.

I think he is probably the worst lead assistant Pop has had. Time to bring in someone from the outside.

Don't forget the Rockets were in cahoots with the Blazers to steal Nicolas Batum from under the Spurs noses in the 2008 draft.

how could you possibly know this? no one here knows what kind of head guy he would be in the NBA. Pop obviously thinks extremely highly of him. The fact he hasnt moved on yet after all these years isnt really evidence of anything. It seems like a pretty obvious plan he would prob take over for Pop when he retires at some point. He's been the one guy who seemed to be on that path of anyone on Pop's staff that branched out elsewhere. I dont know this to be fact, but its always seemed like the obvious thing to happen and gives the Spurs a guy with all the corporate knowledge to carry on after Pop leaves. Now for the tools on here who think Pop sucks they prob will hate that, but for the people who know how much this system has given the Spurs chances it prob would have never had under some other people it would be something worth keeping way past pop

They're not going to hire Bud when there's more experienced and better coaches on the market.
