I think people are losing sight of the fact that if wasn't for fans, people like Tim Duncan would be flipping burgers. It's totally appropriate to expect something from them. It's the least they can do, to sign a child's autograph.
Yeah because we all know Duncan didn't finish college.

    Oh wait... he did.

for me personally, anything they do off the bball court is just gravy. we pay to see games, in some cases pay league pass to watch games. the ticket and NBA t.v. contract don't say that any time i ask for an autograph i will get it.

and if signing a child's autogrpah is "the least they can do" i'm curious what else you think the should do for you. pay for your meal when you see them at McDonalds? take your groceries to your car when you see them at H.E.B.? scrub your windows when you see them at gas station? you shouldn't expect anything from them other than a basketball game

and also you're giving a one-sided argument. you say "if it wasn't for fans..." look at the other side. if it wasn't for the Tim and the Spurs...(insert whatever). it's a two way street, acting like he's the only one recieving anything is wrong.

that said, he may have just had a bad day. it happens to everyone.

Do you think he gets a scholarship if he isn't Tim Duncan, future NBA star?
You do know he was training for the Olympics as a swimmer, right? And why does someone have to have a scholarship to go to college? Not every athlete is an imbecile.

Of course they do, because without people like me they wouldn't enjoy the luxuries that they currently enjoy. They would be living paycheck-to-paycheck.

I'm laughing my ass off right now. You think that the only way an athlete can be successful is by being an athlete? Do you have any idea how many very intelligent college graduates play professional sports? You need to grow up, or wake up..one or the other. It's not just about us. Do you have any idea how much the Spurs have done for the economy of San Antonio? Those championships they've won, because of Tim...

An estimated 60 percent of N.B.A. players are broke within five years of retiring, and 78 percent of N.F.L. players are bankrupt or under financial stress because of joblessness or divorce within two years, according to a report by Sports Illustrated in March. The magazine also reported that many baseball players struggle financially after retirement.

They do that because they're not forced to earn degrees, because the NBA gives them what they need. If they didn't have that, they would graduate, and get normal jobs. They don't graduate because the NBA offers them the millions they wouldn't get if they took a job as a psychiatrist, or professor, or whatever they chose to do. If they finished their degrees, they would have the degree to get a good job, and would be just fine. Since they leave school early, they have nothing else to do, though some of them go back to school and finish their degrees. If you really think Tim Duncan, who got a degree in psychology with honors from one of the most prestigious universities in the country, would be flipping burgers if he wasn't playing basketball, you're an idiot.

Probably between 1994-1999, I would sometimes try to get Spurs autographs during non-scheduled events. David wasn't always Saint David when it came to getting his autograph. Tim could look really pissed off about even being approached.

Both could get visibly disgruntled when it wasn't a scheduled signing but I got the impression they signed at least a few autographs most of the time.

I think Tim was always leery about someone selling his stuff on Ebay.

If they were y about giving out autographs, I kind of got the picture why back then but now I completely understand. You had people sending their kids up to get $150 authentic jerseys or $70 gameballs signed and then sell them. You had adults right there with the kids. You had people that just grabbed a napkin or newspaper (sometimes even stuff with other players) just to see if they could scrounge up their autograph. You had people that followed them everywhere and already had 20+ autographs. You had sports memorabilia guys trying to get theirs.

If it got old for them, not hard to see why.

And people would get really pushy with them, sometimes just being completely rude. For example, they'd get one thing signed and then pull out a stack of basketball cards and expect them to sign all of them and tell them how to sign them. Some people would start telling them how to play better. I don't even remember everything but people got pretty rude.

I still remember one guy going up to Avery and telling Avery, Hey Avery, Can you go get Big D to sign this?

I'm sure it gets old. And 90% of the people still think how come they can't take 4 seconds and pose for a picture or sign an autograph? Most people never stop to do the math. These guys would still be signing if they signed every last piece of paper and stood for every last "just a picture".

The reason they can't just "hang out with the fans" is because most times the fans would absolutely mob the out of them. Even if they don't get mobbed, there's always those few that just can't leave them alone - the "I just had to do something, it was my chance" guys.

Somewhat off topic but I'm sure there are some people on here that are ballsy enough to walk up to some known Spurs like Bonner Hill and RJ and just trash them to their face.

So to the guy crying about the picture, it's not as simple as you'd like to think. For every just a picture, there's a 1,000 more right behind you. And no, the Spurs don't owe you anything.

Again, this is another case of someone getting ridiculous with it and not following logic. An autograph isn't hard to sign. It takes about the same amount of time to sign an autograph as it does to say "no". Again, it's about showing gra ude to the people who afford him the luxury of living the lifestyle that he does, because without people like me he's nothing.

It isn't a two-way street. If it wasn't for the Spurs and Tim Duncan, I would live the same exact way I'm doing now; the same cannot be said for Tim.

I remember Tim doing alot of events at Homecourt America back in the day. But heres the thing...just bc he DID the charity events didn't mean he was a nice or cool guy. The whole time he sulked and looked totally uninterested...he smiled for camera flashes but for the rest of the time had a scowl on his face.

From what I have seen over the years hes not that nice in public, but WGAF he's a basketball legend and thats what matters most to me.

AD had that incident at HCA but other than that, he was actually was always really nice and courteous to all the staff when he would come into my restaurant.

    Weird side note:
AD always paid not only in cash, but EXACT change. He carred what looked like a womens wallet that had a pocket for change and always paid his bill exactly.

Duncan should sign autographs and pose with kids no matter the situation. I mean, even if Tim's house is on fire, or if Amy is hanging off a cliff needing someone to save her, Tim should ignore those things and take pictures with kids when prompted.

    That'd be cool.
