An interesting development that could potentially affect the recruitment of ATH Daniel Brooks. As we all know Brooks' father's job keeps him on the road the majority of the week and that's kept him from meeting the UT staff thus far. He's been working in Port Lavaca and has been driving back-and-forth between there and Rockdale for some time. Well, the family has made the decision to move to Port Lavaca and Brooks will finish up his high school career at Calhoun HS. He just got that much further away from Norman.

Good for the Brooks family. I'm glad to hear that they will be together as a family again. I still would like to see the Brooks' Texas offer go away.

    Burrowed from other sources:

The recruitment of athlete Nelson Agholor (Tamp, Fla./Berkeley Prep) continues to be one without much known other than the schools the 6-foot-1, 180-pound electric playmaker has unofficially visited.

Agholor was talking up Texas at a recent 7-on-7 in Tampa
Agholor, the No. 22 prospect in The247, visited Texas and TCU in early June. Upon returning home, he participated in a 7-on-7 tournament in the Tampa area.

During the event, a source told Hookem.com that Agholor was overheard telling a 2012 prospect committed to an SEC East program, “You need to go check out Texas”.

He added, “If you love football, you should go check out Texas. It’s a football school.”

The source said Agholor was talking up Texas in a big way to the 2012 prospect. Texas was the only school Agholor was talking up during that few minute period of time.

Shortly after, Agholor was approached by a newspaper reporter and went back into “media mode” as so many kids do these days.

Agholor has taken unofficial visits to Florida, Florida State, USC, Auburn, Georgia and UCF in addition to Texas and TCU. He will be going back to USC this summer.

Texas defensive backs coach Duane Akina is heading up the Agholor recruitment. Akina made a school stop at Berkeley Prep in early May. The Longhorns have talked with Agholor about playing defensive back and receiver.
Prior to June, USC, Florida and Florida State were considered to be the top three by media members in the Sunshine State.

DGB and other recruiting notes from Ketch's 10 Thoughts:

No. 4 - About that Dorial Green-Beckham visit this weekend?

I had a chance to speak with a good source this weekend about the state of recruiting for the Longhorns on the heels of DGB's visit this weekend, as well as a few waves in a couple of in-state recruitments (Colin Blake/Daniel Brooks).

The single biggest frustration I'm sensing from those close to the program centers around the difficulties of getting such a late start on all of their 2012 pursuits. While it might not seem like a big deal in light of their dominant pull inside Texas' borders, it is being felt with the out-of-state recruits.

As it relates to DGB, it's a hurdle that is going to be tough to clear. The good news is that the Longhorns were hoping to make a strong impression ? a really strong impression ? and they did. That being said, there's a feeling that DGB isn't going to be won over in a weekend, so time needs to become a staunch ally for the Longhorns in his recruitment.

The person I spoke with indicated that another visit in the fall or during the final months of the recruiting process would prove to be critical.

Rome wasn't built in a day and neither is this recruitment. This weekend was a positive step in the right direction. More need to take place.

As for Brooks, I get the sense that the Longhorns really like him and there's some belief that OU's head start on them in recruiting is the only thing holding them back. The Longhorns sort of brought a knife to a gun show and they'll need to be Doc Holliday-like to win the battle, but they've got a fighting chance.

Finally, the situation for the final defensive back offer might take more time to develop, possibly into the season.

p.s. - Whatever this staff does in 2012 in recruiting is considered the low bench-mark moving forward. Without even asking about 2013, I was told that the staff feels very good about their position with the preferred targets among the current junior class. Very, very good.

    Daniel Brooks article:

    http://www.caller.com/news/2011/jun/...on-to-play-at/

PORT LAVACA — The buzz around Port Lavaca Calhoun's football team might get a little louder if an Oklahoma commit decides to remain along the Gulf Coast this fall.

Daniel Brooks, who ran for more than 1,600 yards and had five interceptions for Class 3A Rockdale last fall, has moved with his family to the Calhoun County Independent School District. Brooks' father was recently transferred by Alcoa to the Port Lavaca area.

"They have been here about a month," Port Lavaca Calhoun athletic director and football coach Richard Whitaker said. "I don't count on players before they are enrolled in school, but I would say (Brooks playing for Port Lavaca Calhoun) is probably going to happen."

Brooks currently is committed to Oklahoma, but he's part of a recruiting battle as he visited the University of Texas earlier this month and received a scholarship offer from the Longhorns.

The 5-foot-9, 175 speedster, who won the 3A state le in 100 meters, could fit nicely into a loaded Sandcrabs' backfield. The option offense returns quarterback Joseph Bargas (more than 1,500 yards rushing in 2010), fullback Brandon Griffiths (more than 1,700 yards) and slotback Jeremy Loya (more than 1,000 yards and 10 yards per carry).

"Our left slotback graduated, so he could fit nicely there," Whitaker said. "That would be something to have a backfield with four 1,000-yard rushers."

Whitaker also could see Brooks slipping into the Sandcrabs' defensive backfield behind a pair of four-year starters at linebacker in Nick McCrory and Alex Trevino.

Now it's just a matter of the Brooks family settling into the area and finishing some school transfer paperwork before one of the top ranked 4A teams in the state, according to Dave Campbell's Texas Football, adds a potent piece of the puzzle.

Port Lavaca Calhoun opens the season on Friday, Aug. 26 at Calallen.

I still wonder if he'll get to Austin for an official visit this fall seeing as how Brewer and Jones have been recruiting him pretty hard.

I dunno Floss. It's very risky to not offer Blake because Akina is waiting on an official visit from Geno Smith that might not never come. I think we're in agreement that Texas must lock up one more corner for 2012. I believe Blake and Smith are close enough that Akina should go with Blake and not look back. In my opinion, if / when Blake signs he will be the best DB in Texas' current class.

Reading about him, he seemed like a target for a lot of schools.

He must have been as close to 4 star as possible without being a 4 star.

He's ranked a little lower than I thought he would be initially, but it's a good pick-up for Tech. I would have been happy with Keenan at UT.

Keenan was ranked right behind Michael Starts on the LSR 100 for quite some time. I'm not sure how Starts can be one of the top recruits in the country while Keenan is often forgotten.

I still think Armstead has better feet, agility and quickness, but I too would be happy with Keenan at Texas. Good pick up for Tech.

Starts was another fine pick up.

Along with getting H. Vaitai, it's been a tremendous recruiting season for linemen for Tech.
