Interesting Monday morning update...according to TigerBait (the LSU Rivals affiliate), 2013 OT Josh Thomas of Shreveport Evangel Christian has already received a scholarship offer from Mack Brown and Stacy Searels. I don't know how his trip to Austin managed to get by all of the local reporters and pay sites, but he apparently attended J5 or J12 recently and met with the coaches at the conclusion of the camp. Now, usually when a kid claims he has a Texas offer and we know he hasn't been on campus, it's easy to dismiss this kind of report. However, the difference in this situation is Thomas mentioning that he had a face-to-face meeting with the UT staff and was offered on the spot. This one is worth keeping an eye on as Thomas will be recruited nationally. He's headed to Baton Rouge soon for an LSU summer camp where he is expected to pick up an offer from the Tigers.

Wow Floss, we were just talking about Josh Thomas last week. It's a very surprising that Texas offered Thomas, but didn't offer Marcell Harris. Both are elite OOS recruits, who might not be able to make it down for one of the Junior Days. It stands to reason if Thomas is worthy of a Texas offer as a sop re, so is Harris. Coach Searels and Mack must be extremely high on Thomas to offer this early. I can't remember the last time Texas offered a sop re. More SEC style recruiting from Coach Searels, I like it.

Floss do you think this turns the in state OL recruiting on it's head? Are we looking at A'Shawn Robinson, Darius James and Jake Raulerson as the only sure things for early offers? I would also offer Kent Perkins early. Ja'Braylin Thomas' early offer is looking a bit shaky in my opinion.

I don't see how Brewer doesn't make the trip with Peat unless he absolutely can't. He's been trying to get the kid on campus for five months now. Looks like Quandre Diggs, Miles Onyegbule and Cayleb Jones have also joined this recruiting effort.
Floss there's some noise that Brewer might have a scheduling conflict with an Elite 11 Camp during July 21st - 23rd. Do you think Connor skips it to play host to Peat? There's also some talk that Connor could fly directly from the camp (it's at Pepperdine) to join Peat in Austin. It's imperative that Connor joins Peat in Austin. I'm pretty certain that Connor understands that. Nobody wants Andrus Peat at Texas more than Connor Brewer.

My guess is he was basically told he'll have an offer come February but it's not technically official at this point in time. IMO, he was given the same speech that both OL/DL Jake Raulerson and DB Marcell Harris received; you'll be getting offered at the end of your junior season. Rivals can only go off of what they're told by these kids or their coach. For example, LB Derek David of Rockdale is listed as having received a Texas offer and everyone knows that's not true. He hasn't had contact with the UT staff in over a year now. I wouldn't worry right now as to how this situation affects the in-state guys. Thomas currently favors LSU and he could be off of the radar by the time 2012 rolls around. Either way, I think it's necessary that the out-of-state guys get a little more love in the early stages so I'm all for this strategy.

I think Brewer will do what it takes to get to Austin for Peat's visit. There's no reason he couldn't get to campus that same Friday the Elite 11 camp ends. He's been after this guy all year and I expect him to be there for his future LT (hopefully).

Good stuff Floss. I figured it was a promised offer not an actual offer. It'll be interesting to see if Josh Thomas makes a Junior Day. It's still interesting that Thomas was promised an offer. No film is up yet, but Thomas must elite.

I think the Brewers are going to own a piece of Southwest Airlines before Connor signs his LOI. I guess when all your children are on athletic scholarships you can splurge on airline tickets. I have no doubt that Connor Brewer and Cayleb Jones will show Peat a great time in Austin.

Deep sigh. Pissed off glare at the sky. From the Worldwide Leader:

    Dalton Santos
    6-foot-2, 240 pounds
    College: Undeclared
At first glance, Santos looks like your typical downhill run-plugger with great bulk and strength. But he's more than that as you continue to watch tape. Don't be fooled by the No. 78 jersey he wears; Santos is as tough as a nose tackle, but has the range of an outside linebacker. This punishing tackler will blow up the inside run but also scrape off tackle and chase plays down, sideline to sideline, with deceptive speed and closing burst. His best attributes may be his instincts and first-step quickness to beat blockers to the point of attack. We are a bit surprised the recent Oklahoma State decommit has not garnered more attention on the recruiting trail from the in-state Longhorns

are hispanics getting this much more athletic or have we always been this athletic and the UT elite have finally found it worth their while to recruit hispanics?

Congratulations to Nick Jordan. Welcome to Texas.

I hate to rain on the Jordan parade, but who does he take a scholarship from? Last time I checked, Will Russ was a redshirt freshman on scholarship, and David Ash was a superb punter in high school. Even offering Jordan doesn’t make sense to me. Jordan is primarily known for his kick off and place kicking skills. So Will Russ is going to be a 5 year scholarship punter? It’d be nice to have a guy that could handle punting, place kicking and kick offs. Great use of a scholarship. I can understand the “need” to replace Justin Tucker, but a preferred walk on kicker would be a better way to go.

I’ve always been a firm believer in the preferred walk on route with kickers and punters. If they do well, they make the team and give Texas 3 years of service before earning a scholarship as a senior. That’s the way it should be. I’d remind everyone that Texas has experienced success with walk on kickers and punters. I’m not sure why or when the scholarship kicker / punter trend started. Maybe missing on Mason Crosby changed some minds in the program.

I hate to pin this one on Mack, but the guy talks about the kicking game more than old men talk about the weather. I ask again, who does this take a scholarship from? What if Texas decides to not offer Justin Thomas because Jordan took a spot. Would any of us be happy about that?

There’s some noise about 3 players in the program in very hot water. Perhaps one of them reached a boil and is out which opened up a spot. Still, the spot would be best used elsewhere.

Thanks, Pop. Hopefully we'll know soon whether or not Jordan is a preferred walk-on or is actually counting towards the numbers.

On another note, I wanted to clarify that QB Connor Brewer will be flying in from California on Friday, July 22nd to be with OL Andrus Peat in Austin. WR Cayleb Jones will also be there to play host.

I think Santos is actually half white / half Hispanic. If benefactor is lurking around here, he can probably clarify. This is one guy UT knows they missed on.

I hope Nick Jordan is preferred walk - on Floss. I don't understand why we would need another scholarship kicker with redshirt freshman Will Russ already on the roster.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Texas add a preferred walk - on kicker last year in Army All American Ben Pruitt?

Floss good news on Brewer. He understands he needs to play tour guide to reel in Andrus Peat.

It's definitely not a "Texas doesn't recruit Hispanic players" thing. It's a Texas missing on Dalton Santos in their early evaluations thing. Santos is prime example of why you shouldn't offer reaches at Junior Day, and continue to evaluate at least into May. Hindsight is 20/20, but I bet Texas wishes they could take back the DLT offer knowing what we know now. Mario Edwards is going to Florida State, DLT couldn't help us with that, and Santos is clearly a better player than DLT. I guarantee Manny Diaz won't make the same mistake next year.

More on UT's latest commitment in K Nick Jordan of Coppell...he was actually in Austin yesterday where he was hosted by Major Applewhite and given a tour of the facilities and campus. Mack Brown happened to be out of town at the time so Applewhite told Jordan to call Brown later that night when he got home. Brown offered Jordan a full ride during their phone conversation and he committed on the spot. He also had offers from Illinois, Iowa State and Oklahoma. This one is a total surprise considering the staff is so concerned with scholarship numbers at the moment. Could some attrition be afoot? It's also interesting considering the last kicker that UT signed for the 2011 class, K Ben Pruitt of The Woodlands, was only given preferred walk-on status and he's arguably the better prospect.

I also wanted to mention that there are rumors out there of WR Marquise Goodwin missing the first game of the year due to track obligations. Hopefully more info comes out on this soon, but I wonder if that means he'll also miss fall camp. For those that are unaware, Goodwin has missed the past two spring training sessions due to his track commitment to UT.

Very strange news. I'm willing to wager that Nick Jordan would have accepted a preferred walk - on offer. This just proves that nobody knows the is going on over at Bellmont. Texas is super tight on scholarship and they offer a kicker a full ride? Just bizarre. I hope you're right Floss and attrition is finally coming. If Will Russ stays with the program, Jordan's scholarship offer is a mistake.

I'm getting pretty close to giving up on Marquise Goodwin and football. If his heart and future is in track, I wish him well. I honestly don't know what Goodwin can give us in the season if he misses summer workouts and fall camp.

He's all white. Not sure where the Santos originates from in his family...but I worked with his mom and went to high school with his dad's brother and both of them are white.

I'll try to dig a few other places for info. She hasn't responded to me on facebook so I think they are still undecided as of right now. I have a guy here at work that was real close with her while she was working here and still talks to her a lot. Perhaps he'll have some info. If anything, I know I'll catch her at the Van/Lindale game this year as my nephew starts at WR for Lindale. Josiah Johnson...remember that name.
