I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that Marquise Goodwin will never contribute in a big way to the football team. Hope he runs train in the 2012 Olympics.

If Reader is as interested in Texas as he says he is, we need to get him. I understand Agholor, Green-Beckham, Peat, etc. are great players, but it sounds like Reader is all Texas if we got harder for him.

I'd be very proud to watch Marquise compete in the 2012 Olympic Games. I think the football skills are there, but Marquise's heart is in track. Do you Marquise.

I agree with you on Reader DDW, if Bible and / or Cotton are in hot water, Texas should step it up on Reader. To me it's about quality, if Reader is better than some of the guys we have, you make room for him. Reader is a prime example of an OOS recruit with Texas ties.

Couple of notes before I go out of town for the weekend. Hope everyone has a nice 4th of July.

*It was reported today that WR Marquise Goodwin will forgo the upcoming season and take a redshirt in order to prepare for the 2012 Olympics.

*This guy has been talked about sparingly in the past, but DT Donald Hopkins of Lago Vista is a guy the staff is keeping close should UT lose a defensive lineman or two before the season begins. Hopkins' stock blew up this spring and everyone started noticing him once he was offered by Alabama. Turns out Bo Davis asked him to come visit campus and he did just that on June 16th. He was basically told that he's highly thought of by the staff, but there isn't any room to offer him a scholarship as things presently stand. He currently favors Missouri and says he may make a decision this month, but he mentioned Texas will be tied for his top school should the Longhorns offer.

*2013 WR Marcell Ateman of Wylie East was on campus Thursday and had the opportunity to get the grand tour from Darrell Wyatt and Marcus Tubbs. At 6'5"/180, I think Ateman will be on of UT's top targets at his position for the next class. He's already received offers from Arizona and Tennessee. Keep an eye on his teammate 2013 WR Quan Jones as well.

    Thanks Floss.

I think Marquise needs to call it quits with football. I'm all for him pursuing his track dreams, and his future is almost certainly there. So we hold a scholarship for Marquise this year, and he probably gives up football after the Olympics next year. I know the Olympics end in August, but if Marquise does well he'll have a busy post Olympic circuit. If Marquise is on a Wheaties box and getting endorsement deals, what's his motivation to come back to football? Marquise could also run track professionally in Europe and make a good living. Just a gut feeling on this one. Best of luck to Marquise, but I hope the coaches are 100% certain that Marquise is coming back next year.

I'm shaking my head on Donald Hopkins. Bible has one foot out the door, and we can't offer the best in state late bloomer at DT? At least offer to give Hopkins, and Bible for that matter, something to think about.

Ateman is an impressive looking kid. It seems like there's a lot of height in te 2013 WR class. Possibly take your big receivers this year and slot guys next year? Texas will have a very tough choice to make with Chevoski Collins and Ra'Shaad Samples. I like Collins' talent better, but it might not be a talent decision. Samples' daddy migt be one of the top 3 most important high school coaches in the state of Texas.

Sucks about Goodwin, he was a big play guy. I guess will see more Hales. I'm curious to see Darius White get some more time.

    Is Jaxon Shipley gonna redshirt?

The Goodwin deal is good for both sides. He gets to do what he's best at, and UT can give playing time to its younger receivers (Harris, White, Shipley, etc) who will all probably be better in the long run IMO.

Shipley won't redshirt. Just too good to keep him off of the field.

I didn't notice any new CB prospects in any of the threads over there, but might have overlooked it.

Looks like "attrition" at DT might come from an unexpected place as it's becoming apparent that Quincy Russell didn't do what he needed to do academically to enroll and be cleared to play, and he's not taking any summer classes AFAIK. Looks to now be a clearinghouse issue and we know how that can go. Not sure when or if he makes it to campus.

It was DB Daje Johnson of Pflugerville Hendrickson. It was a non-update. Says he hasn't heard anything from Texas and he's solid to TCU.

To expound upon what Whisky said, it looks like Russell recently took his ACT again and there's a chance he may not qualify at all. The UT staff supposedly thinks he'll eventually get in, but it's not going to be as simple of a task as we previously thought. That's likely why we've seen interest in DT Donald Hopkins of Lago Vista lately. He could very well get an offer somewhere down the line should things continue to get worse with Russell's situation.

DT Quincy Russell is done, fellas. You may see the UT staff pursue him down the line once he's completed a couple of years at JUCO, but I doubt he ever wears burnt orange.

Yep, that news came quickly but it seems he slid in GPA this last semester and hit a point on the sliding scale where his ACT score wasn't high enough to qualify for UT with the lower GPA.

Interesting to see where they go from here. 2012 DT or save the ship and attack 2013 guys?

I think they need bodies now and I'm not so sure we're at the end of DT attrition. The staff may not feel good about Bible or Cotton either. I say take Hopkins and do your best to load up in 2013 as well.

Unfortunate, but not unexpected. It sounds like Quincy failed to take care of business in the classroom. I'm all for taking Hopkins, if he's Bama good, he's Texas good.

Floss any chance that Reader gets a serious look from Texas now that they need bodies at DT?

I think it's safe to say that Reader has become more of a realistic possibility now that Russell is out of the picture. I think they look at the local boys first, though. Hopkins is probably high-fiving everyone like Borat today.

Apparently it's got something to do with the death of his brother.
I can't read the article, but this is the preview on Inside Texas:

In this edition of the Inside Texas Inside Scoop, we get another look inside the team during summer workouts, including a quarterback who has stepped up his game over the last week and a "mean looking" running back. Plus, a family tragedy that could lead to more team attrition, why a 2012 OU commit is a prime target for Texas and hoops recruiting notes. All that and much more in the Inside Scoop!
