To follow up on RB Cody Johnson...I talked to a member of Recruitocosm last night that's close to the Johnson family and said he'd be "shocked" if CJ gave up football. He's used the family's recent tragedy as motivation and is currently in the best shape he's been in since high school (if not better). He's looking to have a big year and end his college career on a high note. I was asked to not discuss his situation beyond that out of respect to the Johnsons.

Just a quick note from Nike's training combine, The Opening...QB Connor Brewer and WR Cayleb Jones have already been talking up Texas with ATH Nelson Agholor. I will get the TV schedule for the event soon for those of you who have ESPNU.

Cody has frustrated me with his conditioning before, but he never struck me as a young man who would walk away from football. Tragic news about his brother. I hope Cody can have a strong senior season and go on to a successful NFL career.

I picked up an interesting tidbit on Taylor Bible over the weekend. Burnt Orange Nation contributor Ghost of Big Roy (GOBR) posted a recent picture of Bible on Twitter over the weekend. Taylor is looking much healthier, and GOBR believes he is down to 310 – 315. Bible needs to lose more weight this summer, but it’s good to see he’s headed, possibly, in the right direction. Bible was dominant at 285 as a high school junior, his target weight is probably around there.

There was some noise during the spring that Bible was a pet project of Wylie and that Taylor could give Texas 10 – 15 snaps a game during the season. Personally, I think Bible is a kid who didn’t handle the redshirt season well. He reported fat and injured and with nothing to look forward to he didn’t improve. If Bible can see the field, I think he’ll respond and put in work.

Just to re-visit the whole situation from last week with 2013 OL Josh Thomas of Shreveport Evangel Christian...OrangeBloods talked to him yesterday and they mentioned he pretty much has a verbal offer at this point. Thomas is currently reporting in at 6'7"/329. He's a first Junior Day offer should he continue to stay in contact with the UT staff. The Longhorns planted a nice little seed with Thomas being the first school to assure him of an offer.

Looks like Chip Kelly and Oregon are getting themselves into some deep here regarding Will Lyles. I'm really sick of this guy.

Now he is putting blame on Texas as well.

On Sunday 6/19, Will Lyles went on KCOH 1430 AM in Houston and said he could "guarantee" that the University of Texas was paying off high school coaches so that they would get their players to play for the Longhorns. Listen to it at: http://sheltonmedia.blogspot.com/201...kcoh-1430.html

TFloss, good stuff on Thomas. Texas did some prep work on Thomas while recruiting his former teammate Jermauria Rasco. I'm glad to hear Texas planted the seed. Recruits always remember their first scholarship offer.

Lamar Louis believes fellow LSU commit Torshiro Davis is reopening his recruitment. Also mentioned Landon Collins' Bama cap. #TheOpening
Good news. Has Torshiro set up a visit yet?

Pop, Torshiro visited Texas on June 12th. Texas is in his top 3, but allegedly behind LSU and Bama. Very good news on Torshiro opening up his recruitment. I think the next step would be Texas coaches contacting Torshiro (the dead period is over) and Torshiro coming back to Austin for an official visit in the fall.

Right, I forgot about that visit.
The Davis situation reminds me of Rasco last year. Not just because they're from the same town, but also because we don't have a great shot again against the SEC schools.

UPDATE: Class of 2019 top prospect Kenny Jackson has been wearing a UT t-shirt lately. Here's a scouting report I gathered from watching his Pop Warner games: Highly advanced for his age...can already "palm" a football...once called an audible at the line of scrimmage, play led to mass confusion amongst his teammates and a turnover but shows his advanced development...has some potential character issues: was suspended twice for bullying (although he claims the other kids started it)...does not have serious focus necessary to compete at elite levels: seems more interested in playing on the Wie atm. Will update as he develops.

Class of 2017 RB prospect La'Mont Morris was spotted making a hook'em horns sign during recess a month ago and could be an early commit if Mack brings him in to visit the campus. He rushed for 152 yards on 12 carries against the touted Pop Warner Swee er team full of future D1 talent. Concerns are that he's too lanky to play running back at the D1 level, and also he was held back in 2nd grade, twice.

Above are pictures of QB Connor Brewer and WR Cayleb Jones with Jerry Rice at Nike's The Opening. "TexasGang or Die" is apparently the slogan for the 2012 class and all of the commitments are wearing these shirts. I've seen RB Johnathan Gray say this to 2013 OL/DL Jake Raulerson a couple of times.

Just an FYI from the camp...DB Landon Collins of Geismar, LA was crowned the best overall combine performer and ATH Corey Coleman of Richardson Pearce was given the le of "fastest man."

There are a hand full of DBs I wish held Texas offers. Namely, Landon Collins, Corey Coleman, Taje Johnson and DeVante Harris. The Hook Em 247 staff believes Harris could Texas' big miss this year.

I'd like to see Coach Akina put some effort into recruiting Collins, Johnson or Harris. My understanding is that Johnson is pretty solid to TCU. I wonder if Harris would listen if Texas made a serious offer? Hopefully, Collins' performance at The Opening will grab Coach Akina's attention and he'll step up his efforts.

Akina better be extremely confident with Geno Smith, because there are some supremely talented DB recruits in his own backyard.

I love the "TexasGang or Die" slogan. Anything that promotes unity, hopefully other recruits will be drawn to it.

Texas still in Landon Collins' top 5? Reciprocate the interest Coach Akina! Burrowed recently from the Shag:

"Ranked ninth overall in the class of 2012 by MaxPreps, Collins has started to narrow down his recruiting and is focused mainly on in-state power LSU and powerhouses Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and Texas.

“It's a beautiful place,” Collins said of the Longhorns. “It's got all the academics at that spot. The team is great, they always have a chance for the BCS. (Tennessee) same thing. They're coming up with a new strategy for their DBs. They have everything they're looking for. I like Alabama, it's a beautiful place, in Tuscaloosa. I love the coaches. Florida is in a great city, me and my brother came up from there not to long ago. They greeted us with open arms and wanted us to play there.

“Distance will not be a factor for me. I've been on my own at home and when I'm on my own I do everything by myself.”

looks like the Hall of Jerry Rice complete with a wax statue of Jerry Rice

"TexasGang or Die" might be the worst slogan ever.

Some more notes from the opening.

Peter Jinkens checked in at 6'0, 197 pounds. Kinda small for a 3-4 backer IMO, ran a 4.52

Corey Thompson has nice size, 6'2, 201, and ran a 4.66.

Tim Cole checked in at a similar size, 6'1, 205, and ran a 5 second flat 40.

Cyril Noland (who told reporters he'd commit to A&M if offered) is a DB who is 6'1, 187 and ran a 4.7 with a 4.1 shuttle. Pretty good feet/hips for a bigger CB.

Aziz tu came in at 6'4, 277 and only participated in the shuttle. Guys a beast

The TCU and Baylor commit(s) stole the show, Daje, Kolby, and Corey Coleman all qualified for the SPARQ finals after Daje set a new SPARQ record in qualifying. Wonder if these guys will start picking up some more offers.

Trey Williams clocked a 4.37 40, one of the fastest of the day.

Bralon Addison with a 3.93 shuttle.
