Even Venezuelan fútbol has grown so much over the past decade... they're no longer pushovers...
Disagreed, Argentina and Brazil may have go down a bit but Southamerica as a whole is in great shape, I think this last WC showed that. Every CONMEBOL qualified to the knock out stage, 4 out of 5 got to the quarters and the only one that idn't lost to a southamerican team, Uruguay got to the semis and Paraguy was a penalty away of knocking out the eventual champs. Besides the Conmebol is the only federation that can say that every member of it is compe ive.

I meant to answer this a while back...
Obviously their age/experience would factor against them (more than likely weighing against them defensively)... But seriously, outside of Gio Dos Santos (and the suspended players) the skeleton-crew U-22 Mexican squad that was left to play the tournament doesn't have much talent...
I would venture to say that a 5 or 6 players on the U-17 squad are far more talented and skilled than those on the U-22 team...
Off the top of my head:
Julio Gomez
Omar Briseño
Carlos Fierro
Espericueta
Giovanni Casillas
Carlos Guzman
Marco Gracias
That's probably true, but it's not the same to play the youngsters mixed with some veterans than to play a whole U-17 team. Too much physical and mental difference.
are you all saying that this U17 Uruguayan team would have defeated Peru?
This.
There's a huge difference playing against other 16 year olds vs Men.
No.only Phenomanul is saying that. tbh
The only way the future is in our hands is with a win.
If we tie, we depend on Bolivia not beating Colombia. If Bolivia beats Colombia, Colombia, Bolivia and Costa Rica all end up with 4 points and we're done.
If we tie, and Bolivia ties or loses, we're third with 3 points.
If we lose, we're done.
if argies are scared that C. Rica won tonight (even the press is as all well) then the situation is way bad.
As far as I know this Costa Rican team is U23, right? Argentina must win, is almost forced to it. If the first goal comes in the first 45 minutes, then they're saved.
lmao nothing about our past play makes me confident... i will LMFARGENTINA so hard on monday night if they manage to lose. It would be re ed. 0 wins in the easiest group with the best talent. Fun times.
I blame the cold weather. Why couldn't this have been in some northern South American country? ..except Bolivia
Burdiso talking to Messi when last night's game was over: "Pendejo, la última jugada se corre, no te podés dejar anticipar la puta que te pario"
(notice that the Argentinean pendejo does not mean the same as the mexican. In Argentina the slang pendejo refers to 'kid'. I ended up learning the mexican meaning the hard way)
lol Burdiso talking to anybody
Messi should've told him: "Burdiso, stop giving the ball to Colombia"![]()
Messi wishes he was Spanish right about now![]()
touche
lmao this post randomly inspired me to wiki Burdisso, and I learned this:
He must be the Derek Fisher of soccer. Those of you who've been following longer, did this clown consistently start for Inter? His current age and number of years spent in Inter lead me to believe he may have. His current playing does the opposite, however. In 2009, Burdisso won his fourth consecutive Serie A le with Inter, making his personal le tally 19. This makes him the second-leading Argentine behind Alfredo di Stéfano, who has 21.
Anyway, it won't be long before Messi smokes both of their asses in championship count, which is a stupid thing to do in this sport anyway since many of the championships are very different and obviously a huge range in difficulty.
Actually, what I'm saying is that the best veterans on the U-22 + the best of the best of the U-17 would be a better team than just the U-22 team alone...
There is a bit of a distinction... there are plays I've seen Julio Gomez do that I've never seen before on the pitch... the spinning flick that he coupled with 'Ronaldinho's move' (the one foot mis-direction) comes to mind (I believe he did it in the first game this tourney)... I don't care if you're a 28 year old player... the play is so crafty, it would be hard to defend no matter the age....
Aside from talent... 3 of those aforementioned players also have way more game vision than anyone on the U-22 team (not named Dos Santos, obviously)...
lol vicariously living through Samuel, Lucio and Ivan Cordoba...
messi wishes xaviniesta was argy, so he wont get expose
Yes i'm sure that Gomez would've torn Chile's A team appart..He makes Alexis Sanchez look like bofo tbh.
Anyway, regardless of what "U17" players you bring in you are not going to beat Chile's A team with the tactics put in place by Tena. Bunker all game hoping for a draw.. even Gio complained about it after the game saying they were too defensive. Mexico didn't even make a sub until around the 80th minute..Seems like Tena didn't even want to try to win it.
There are capable players on the team including Davila who is the best player from mexico's U20 world cup team and Orrantia who can make things happen on the wings. Neither of them played. and don't forget that the 8 new players that were brought in never had any friendlies to get acclimated to team, they only had 1 or 2 practices together and you could see the lack of chemistry. Oh and the fact that Mexico wasted their 5 over age players.. i mean Marquez lugo? peralta? seriously? Someone please send hookers to their room asap. The only decent referzo mexico brought was Luis Michel.. Gio is 22 so he doesn't even count as an over age player..

I don´t agree. Burdisso is not a world class player ala those you mentioned, but he is serviceable.
Do you think all his coaches were/are stupid?
He´s been a pro for over 10 years. He deserves respect.
You are comparing him to some of the best defenders in the world, and he doesn´t belong in that group. But he is not a scrub either.
Was he lucky to play with some of the best? Yes.
But he started for every team he is been with.
Just mentioning who he teamed up with while at Inter. It's a lot easier to look 'serviceable' when you play with guys like that. At the end of the day, he has no business being the starter and seemingly best defender on a national team like Argentina. If he has to be in that role, then our defense won't be anything but mediocre. The guy is 30 already, and he isn't anything but average.
damn Costa Rica vs. Argentina is gonna be a good game. Ticos wiped the floor with the bolivians.
I reallyl don't see Argentina as favorite this game. But their locality will probably help them as well as hopefully sitting Lavezzi and Tevez
i'm kidding to show how bad batista is, that even caruso is better.
as for sitting messi... I would have done it against colombia, after he twisted his ankle. one, to protect his ankle and his ego, and two, to give the team a chance to play without him. The pressure is really getting to messi, and by extension the rest of the team. It was the ideal situation to sit him. Now, too much is at stake, even though we are playing a u23 team from a tiny country, at home
supposedly batista is going to play messi further back next game with di maria, higuain and aguero up front. wasnt everyone harping on after the WC that messi had to be a forward?

Riquelme is the best playmaker Argentina has had since Maradona retired. The team played much much better when he was in it, in 06 we were beating germany until he was subbed out, not to mention copa america finalists and olympic gold. You praise Pekerman and Bianchi, both love Riquelme since he was a kid, Pekerman in the u20 and u21 team and the 06 WC team, giving him the 10 and making him the star of his team, and Bianchi making him a star in Boca. He made the most assists in the 06 WC, and was the 2nd leading goalscorer of the 07 copa america (and the most for argentina). He won the libertadores in 07 as well, leading his team in goals and chosen MVP of the finals. He is done now because his body is shot, but to call him an overrated piece of shows you dont know jack. the teams biggest need is a playmaker, someone to control the pace and execute a freekick, ie Riquelme. HOPE, hope that pastore can play that role for us, otherwise we are screwed for at least a couple of years
do all complete failures lead the spanish league in assists and lead a POS team to champions league semis? he wasnt a smash success in europe, but he was not a complete failure. complete failure is ariel ortega, but even as a failure in europe Ortega was a great player and if he were in his prime I'd start him over aguero/lavezzi/tevez/di maria in an instant.

Over and over he puts himself above the team, which is a failure. He always wanted special treatment. When he started demanding in Barça, they kicked him out. Villareal had to build a team around him to even sniff some degree of success. In Boca and the NT when he was on it, it was him or the highway.
He peaked in that intercontinental cup against Real Madrid, but he's always been very inconsistent when the bar was raised. In that World Cup Alvarez mentions, he flat out disappeared against Germany. In the last Copa America's final against Brazil, he was also a ghost. And that's his biggest problem. He just takes games off.
Ortega has always been a drunk. What's Roman excuse for the pecho frio?
What this idiot Batista is doing wrong though is flat out playing without a classic 10. Pastore can fill that role. We've been really lacking in producing some talent there since Riquelme, Gallardo, Aimar, etc aged.
