I installed OSX (hackintosh) on my parents' PC and for what they use it for, it's more than enough. Can't beat $30 for an operating system that isn't Linux.

As for me, I'll stick with a PC dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 7.
I have 2 laptops and 2 desktops and they are all dual booted with Ubuntu and Windows 7. Funny thing is at work we have multiple Data centers and there are Windows Server OS Linux, Unix, AIX and a few other flavors of Linux/Unix. But no Xservers. Honestly if your not a hardcore Mac software developer or News Paper / graphic artist or a few other nitch professions, Macs are pointless in the Business world. I used to work at a local co in town that employed "graphic artists" and I used to threaten them that I was going to remove their G5's for PC desktops. The ing horror! was priceless!!

Far be it for ME to participate in any arguments and/or disrespectful threads...

...but I didn't see this discussed anywhere...

    so...Mac or PC ...and why?

I use Mac/Apple products because they are superior in EVERY way....

Because if you aren't using Macs...you are either stupid and/or stubborn...probably both....

    what about you?

I use both and they both have pros and cons. For music, my MacBook pro is definitely superior. Good luck running ProTools on a PC without pulling your hair out. You definitely have to do more tweaking in a PC as opposed to a Mac. I see more innovations in Macs as opposed to pc's though. I'm not a Machead by any means, but I give a slight edge to Macs. If you do basic stuff on your computer I'd stick with PC on account of the price point.

The funny thing about the Mac / PC argument when it comes to Macs being superior because they don't suffer viruses. That's a misconception. There are bugs and viruses for Macs. Why spend the time creating a virus for such a miniscue population. The masses use PC's it makes sense that people would rather spend time trying to exploit something worth while.

I personally have never purchased and rarely use antivirus software. Sure I protect my network by other means but if your smart you should never have to worry about viruses. The people that up their PC's are the dumb asses that run first thing to install all this bull malware freeware and crapware. I know people that are constantly having problems with PC performance because they surf the web for porn. their is a smart way to search and a blind way.

I will concede that Mac products have some purpose in nitch areas and by far are the cutest little piecies of over priced consumer wise. If your talking marketing and Brand wise in consumer areas then yes Mac is having a nice run, with all their nice little toys and all. But when it comes to actuall getting down to business in every way PC is the way.

You just pointed out a bunch of advantages that the Mac has over the PC...then at the end...you went with PC...sounds like you are just blinded with PC hype--when all the facts point to Mac being superior....

the thing about cute toys is that they are cool to play with...and if you are going to spend time with any gadget...why shouldn't they be cool and enjoyable?

The point being that Mac's do well on consumer based products like Iphones and glorified mp3 players. But when it comes down to Business from small to large enterprise organizations you don't around with bull toys. That's my point. If the OP asked what IT gadgets would you prefer by and large Mac would rule this thread. But the OP asked Mac or PC? So PC's rule the world. By the way I personally like some of those Mac gadgets. I don't have anything against those products. I do have a problem with the s that don't know the difference between a shiny pretty marketed gadget and a Client machine that can work both as a Business client and when configured properly a more than capable friendly consumer product.

To start off with, at my job, we have maybe a total of 7 Mac Pro computers running out of about 260 computers total in the division I work for.... and all 7 are emulating Windows to run their projects.

Macs are nice for heavy data computation when it comes to programs like Ansys, Pro/E and MathCAD and even then, they are not that much better when you compare price for the equivelant PC... Other than that, they are worthless in the business world and ESPECIALLY in the gaming world.

Personally, I base my PC purchases on gaming performance, and a Mac just isnt anywhere NEAR a PC in that regard.

Having said that, if I where into productivity, I wouldnt hesitate to buy an iPad or a Macbook Pro.... But Im not into that... So, for me, PC is the gold standard.

Just switched from PC to Mac. I watched in disgust as my PC did a spinning wheel and then interpeted some previous command as a "delete all my emails in Outlook (LookOut) command." Windows is a ty, undependable OS and MS programs, especially Lookout, are buggy as . I use my computer to run a business and I need something that works without screwing up. I am more technical than the average person but I do not have time to jack around with the computer-it just needs to do what it is supposed to do.
Ended up that I had to install Windows on the Mac because I could not find a good subs ute for ACT and I discovered, ironically, that Windows seems more stable running in Parallels.
I am happy I switched. Now I get my work done and spend less time messing around trying to get the computer to do what it needs to do. A PC seems like a bad investment when you measure the cost of time you have to spend jacking around with them to get things done. I place a high value on my time.

I've used PCs since they were first introduced. I've never had to spend time jacking around with them to get things done.

Anything seems like a bad investment if you have problems.

I have a PC running Windows 7 and an old iBook G4. The iBook is slow as now (it's like 7 years old) but it's still kicking pretty good. My desktop is old as well, but pretty futureproof when I bought it so it has no problem with Windows 7 64 bit.

The one thing I did notice is that starting with Vista and moving to 7, Windows stole a lot of things that my old iBook was doing 7 years ago. Someone mentioned that Windows 7 was superior to OS X but that's not true. OS X is ahead of Windows easily. Windows 7 was just starting to catch up to an OS that was 5 yrs old when 7 released. Don't get me wrong, I really like Windows 7, but my previous OS X experience made the switch from XP to Vista/7 so much easier.

define "getting down to business". pretty much everyone in music/film/media/what have you use macs. swear by it. i can speak from personal experience that mac is the way to go for music production. i've personally found it less hassling and every studio i've recorded in. maybe i'm not "getting down to business"

If any of you are trying to convince anyone that you can be more productive with a Macbook Pro than a top of the line PC (or two, for the same price as a Mac), then you are going to have a hard row to hoe.

If you are just saying Mac OS is better than Windows... that's a different story. Windows isn't a PC, just an operating system. I can run a few different OS on my PC.

If you want to argue Windows vs Mac OS, that's fine. Don't act like Mac has better hardware than anyone in the world.

i just stated what I have.

"pretty much everyone in music/film/media/what have you use macs."

i'm very aware that PC stand for personal computer..............with the majority running windows, but I guess the translation was lost.

never said anything about hardware.....because they both pretty much have the same hardware.

    This guy nailed it.

A PC upgraded to its fullest with the latest top of the line hardware will beat out all company manufactured computers.

if only you could up grade more than the HDD and memory in macs. which translates to: if that were possbile; that statement really wouldn't hold any water. like i said, and what should be understood, is the hardware in both are the same.
