Per Hook 'Em 24/7, the staff is evaluating a handful of DE prospects right now in hopes of landing a speed rusher for 2012. No names have been given at this point.
1st Team Big XII:
RB Fozzy Whittaker (as a kick returner)
DE Alex Okafor
LB Emmanuel Acho
DB Kenny Vaccaro
2nd Team Big XII:
DT Kheeston Randall
DE Jackson Jeffcoat
LB Keenan Robinson
DB Quandre Diggs
**Diggs was also named the Big XII Freshman Defensive Player of the Year.
Very surprised DB Carrington Byndom didn't make the list at all.
+1
Byndom might not have made as many dynamic plays as Diggs, but he blanked receivers better. Diggs would make big plays, but would get burnt a little more frequently than we would all have liked, especially against OU.
Either way, its great to see a talented, young duo at CB.
There's a whole bunch of stuff going on right now in the lead up to the big recruiting weekend, lots of chatter that both Hawkins and Moore should be committed to Texas very soon.
How would those two count against the scholarship limits? Would it allow the team to push out to a bigger class depending on attrition?
GH reporting Hawkins is official. Number 22
Donald Hawkins commits to Texas

AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior College offensive tackle Donald Hawkins (Senatoba, Miss./Northwest Mississippi Community College) has hinted that he'd become Texas' 22nd commit for 2012 over the past few days via social media and through text messages with HornsNation.
On Wednesday, he made it a reality.

That's big time. Just need to get him cleared and enrolled in January.
June Jones is leaving SMU to take the Arizona State job.

My favorite part:
"Hopefully I can get DGB to come join me," said Hawkins.
Same ? I have
Does taking Moore and Hawkins allow Texas to possibly sign 27?
Arkansas has hired former Miami coach, Randy Shannon, to be their new defensive coordinator.
I need to find the rule on this but supposedly early enrollees allow for wiggle room when it comes to signing extra players. Since Hawkins, Moore and others will be at UT in January, it could give the staff a few more spots to work with. I'll see if I can dig up something specific. Not sure what number the staff is shooting for but it looks like more than 25. There should be a handful of current players on their way out.
definitely a nice touch to close out the article

I know for a fact that if Texas adds Moore and Hawkins, the class can looks as big as 27 total. 25 + 2 JUCOs (JUCO's don't count toward the 25 player class rule)
Chip Brown posted via Twitter Notre Dame QB Dayne Crist has an interest in Texas.
When I heard Crist was transferring I wondered if he was an option - he is about to graduate so he wouldn't have to sit out next year (ala Russell Wilson at Wisconsin this year).
I don't see any reason not to reciprocate interest considering where we sit at QB at the moment.
Offer has been pulled.

Two thoughts I have right away as to why the staff wouldn't do it; Brewer won't be happy and Crist throws INTs and lacks the ability escape the pocket much like Gilbert did. I want to say Crist has an injury history as well that includes a ruptured patella tendon in his knee. He is getting offers, however.
Brandon Moore has committed to Texas. Welcome # 23. Hook 'Em.
hook 'em
with the recent DT and WR recruits coming in that to me signals mass exodus is coming attrition wise at these positions. at DT De'Aires Cotton and Taylor Bible must have a foot out the door already. not to mention at WR with Darius White, DeSean Hales, John Harris and Bryant Jackson (although Jackson may have shot at moving to DB).
Crist would be a one and done, wouldn't see that as threat to Brewer as he'd just be around to compete his true freshman year. Now McCoy/Ash - that's a different story.
Yeah, he is turnover prone, but our other options aren't? , I'd be happy to have Gilbert back at this point.
