Do trades usually have good reasoning behind them?

Tyson Chandler near deal with Knicks

In the latest twist of his expected departure from the Dallas Mavericks, Tyson Chandler is closing in on a deal with the New York Knicks, according to sources close to the process.

"New York is Tyson's first choice," one source told ESPN.com, confirming a Thursday report from CBSSports.com that the Knicks have jumped ahead of the Golden State Warriors in the race to sign Chandler.
"It's 98 percent sure that Tyson is going to wind up with the Knicks."
To create sufficient salary-cap space to sign Chandler, New York is expected to shed the contracts of Chauncey Billups and Ronny Turiaf, through either trades or the forthcoming amnesty clause.
Signing Chandler, sources said, could free up the Knicks to offer star forward Amare Stoudemire to the New Orleans Hornets in a trade scenario for Chris Paul, who badly wants to reunite with Chandler after their time together with the Hornets.
CSNBayArea.com reported that the Warriors are trying to sweeten a four-year offer to Chandler valued at $60 million to outbid the Knicks.

he isnt restricted. reportedly the mavs offered him a 1 yr 20 million deal. knicks can trade or amnesty billups to open up the rest of the money needed for a 13 million a yr deal. may have enough after to convince grant hill to go there.
Cutting Billups and not picking up the QO on Derrick Brown only gets their payroll down to $46.4 million with 8 players under contract. Add in 3 slots under 11 at minimum and that adds their cap number to $47.6 million. Since the cap this season is supposed to be the same as last season under the proposed CBA ($58.04 million), that leaves $10.4 million to sign Chandler. Of course if they do the Stoudemire for Paul trade it would open up another $2 million or so.

    Yep.

He'll have to be put on suicide watch if he's traded out of there.

Exactly. so the question is would they be better with:

    (A) amare Melo Paul

    or

    (B) Chandler, Melo Amare

    ... ?
I think the realistic question is: would you rather have Paul/Melo/Tyson or Amare/Melo/Average PG since the Knicks likely wouldn't be able to offer Paul the most money if he's a FA.

It's a legit question considering Amare & Melo arent the best of fits. Shifting the talent from Amare to Paul gets you equal talent with a better fit as Tyson is a better defender and doesn't need shots.

Not saying that's what's going on or if I agree with it, just my thoughts.

new trade rumor. amare for cp3. could end up blocking the celtics
I read that as well. Amare is still a young beast and him and okafor could be a nice coup for NO.

If NY goes the amnesty route and decides to keep amare, they must trust Toney Douglas.

The 7 second offense is dead. Nash wouldn't resurrect it. Mike D is worthless.

If Pop had Amare, Melo and Billups, the Spurs would have made it to the Finals last year.

Turiaf at $4.3 million seems like it could be a pretty hard sell early in free agency.

True. If Amare lands in NO, I don't think Hornets push to resign West.
