The defense oriented Pop is gone. The older he get's the more he turns into Don Nelson.
Nice to see you again, Mook! Actually, Novak does defend opposing Bigs...just not very well. Not very well at all. He has played mostly the 4 during his 2 10-day contracts plus the remainder of 2011 with the Spurs. He was particularly useful when Matt Bonner was throwing up bricks 8 out of 9 times during a stretch there.

Classic stuff from Manu!

Because he signed Novak, the back up's back up?
YaY for overreacting!
Manu
He is funnier than TP![]()
Nah...it has more to do with watching a whole season of gimmicky, fools gold basketball last season. But think what you want.
Btw...do us all a favor and remind us who the backups are on the front line.
is there something like fools crystal .... ah yes ... glass

Novak is more of a 3 than a PF or C.
But since you asked. Bonner () behind Tim and Blair behind Tiago.
Keep on saying that if it makes you feel better.
lol didn't edit fast enough
Read my revised post.
Since he knows the system he'll be good
True.
True. He has the shoulder width of a 12-year-old.
True. He is always on the wing.
True.
True. He doesn't guard anyone.
He's supposed to guard post players, but doesn't (or, maybe, can't).
And there's the rub.
Since Neal is out for at least several games according to Pop, they may have brought Novak in for some short term 10 day contract(s) since he knows the system and is a legitimate 3 pt shooter. Good insurance against Neal's return.
With all these games scrunched up together there isn't going to be time to wait on healing injuries. Lose a few games early and you'll be behind in the W-L standings quick.
10 days don't start until later in the season. The have to sign him for the minimum.

Bonner's release is not fast enough to do any damage in the playoffs. He needs wide open 3's to have a chance of hitting. The only other thing I think Bonner can do is take a few steps back to give him more time to get the 3 off.
If Horry had a release as slow as Bonner he wouldn't have been able to hit those 3's against the Kings in '02 and Pistons in '05. Basically if Pop wants to play spread the floor he needs someone that can hit the 3 if the defender isn't close enough to block the shot. Otherwise the defender is going to cheat because he knows he can contest at the last second.
I'll just say this: his jumpshot is beyond smooth, has a quick release, and has made shots for us. Besides that, his defense is ghost-like, and isn't very useful in any other way. If he plays the 3, he should guard the 3. Just because he's 6-10 doesn't mean he should guard the 4 or 5. Sign him only to be a shooting 3. None of this small ball 4 or 5 nonsense.
Well, the good news is that the last time he was with the team, he didn't get minutes ahead of Splitter...

Novak! Awesome!!! High flyin tighty whitey! Veteran presence to teach our pre-school minded young-uns. Only complaint is that he isn't shorter. He may be too tall for this team. I hope they sign him for at least 3 years.
Spurs waive Novak after only four days
http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursna...nly-four-days/
Backup forward Steve Novak was waived by the Spurs on Monday, shortly before the team’s scrimmage at the AT&T Center.
Novak had been signed to a contract on Thursday. He played on the team for 23 games last season, averaging 4.0 points in 8.6 minutes per game.
His departure comes on the heels of Antonio McDyess’ retirement earlier this season.
Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Novak likely is headed to New York with a guaranteed contract.
TBH, I'm always gonna remember Novak ing up the inbounds pass to Manu against Portland. I was there live to see that . The fan behind me laughed his ass off.
