I'm one of those people huh?

You guys are funny. I get that some of you hate religion to a huge degree, but theres a word in there that doesn't mean disagree. Hitchens embodied hate and anytime you speak with such vitriol it is never going to get your message across effectively to a large group of people. He'll appeal to some people, but thats about it.

I could sit here and talk about the evils of religion day and night but that doesn't mean I thought he did a good job communicating the ty aspects of religion (while ignoring the benefits as well).

Whats really funny is that I had much more of an issue with his approach with the war on terror than religion (although they were entirely unrelated) but you guys went straight to the religion canard.

Well, first time for everything I guess because thats the first time I've ever been accused of somehow defending religion.
    crofl benefits.

Hitchesn hated religion, that much is true - and in his arguments, he gave very good arguments why.

He was a humanitarian - always preached treating each other well, calling them "my brothers and sisters".

Yet here we all are talking about him.
I could sit here and talk about the evils of religion day and night but that doesn't mean I thought he did a good job communicating the ty aspects of religion (while ignoring the benefits as well).
That's the thing though, religion is a facade and the benefits of make believe are that you feel better because of a lie. In psychology they call that delusional, and it's not beneficial to be delusional. If pretending an invisible man exists and is watching your every move is beneficial, you have to then ask "to whom". Easy answer: to those who report to the invisible man.

There are simply no benefits for Adult Santa. Naughty, nice... you only find out Santa isn't real when you cannot warn others. Hey, but it's all in fun, right?

We have a right, and I believe a responsibility as humans, to seek the truth and adopt it as our standard.

So, regardless of the perceived "benefits" to religion, it's a sham plain and simple and should be regarded as such until such time as evidence exists to prove the existence of the central figure in that religion.
Whats really funny is that I had much more of an issue with his approach with the war on terror than religion (although they were entirely unrelated) but you guys went straight to the religion canard.
Hitchens is a noted athiest. That's how I have addressed this. Does he have other opinions? Sure, so does Osama Bin Laden, but we all always discuss him in terms of being a terrorist.
Well, first time for everything I guess because thats the first time I've ever been accused of somehow defending religion.
I haven't accused you of it. You said he was a poor communicator, but you got his message. That's an effective communicator.

There are definite benefits to religion. The fact that many of you can't acknowledge that shows just how objective you are on the subject.

the very things that Hitchens talks about (i.e. humanitarianism) is a huge part of judeo-christian philosophy. i'll never forget the time i went to Africa to do social work with a bunch of people from all over the world and this group of athiest german kids all tuned out and did their own thing and did absolutely nothing for the whole month we were there. maybe had they believed that those who needed our help were created by and created from God and are our brothers and sisters, they'd have done something. they may have been delusional, as all you athiests like to say, but they'd have done something. and that's what is important.

8/10 ... at least this troll is consistent.

@Manny, Hitchens called it like it is on every issue, even though I disagreed with his views on the Iraq war. As for the militant nature of Islam and the need to fight it, he backed his opinion up with facts. If you feel better pretending that all religions and Islam in particular are well-intended but misguided, you can continue deluding yourself - it doesn't change the facts.

Jesus why do you guys need to make up? Speaking of facts, care to point to the place I ever said anything like that?

Surely insensitive atheists would never go on a humanitarian trip to begin with.

My guess is that they missed the militant bus and had to hitch a ride on the god bus.

where did i say that? as with everything i say about this topic, you put words in my mouth. this is why i hate arguing about this topic with people on this board. it's impossible to do so when the person you're arguing with puts words in your mouth.
