Good quotes from ATH Kendall Sanders on DGB via Hook 'Em 24/7. The two supposedly spent a lot of time together this past week:

“When we'd talk about recruiting, he'd just name off the schools he's still considering but he'd say Texas a little differently and then smile,” Sanders said. “I told him, 'Oh, I know where you're going!' He'd just laugh, and we were having fun, but I feel like we have a shot.”

“Man, DGB is just a great kid,” Sanders said. “He really is. I hope he comes to Texas, and I think we have a good shot, but he's the kind of guy who you want to see succeed no matter where he goes because he's such a great person.”

I couldn't say it any better myself Mr. Sanders. Sounds and acts like a terrific kid. Sanders very quietly might be on the the top 5 seniors in Texas. Great pick up for Texas.

I'm glad that Kendall made a positive impression on DGB. If he (DGB) wants to be around other young men like himself, Texas is the place for him.

More on WR Thomas Johnson...turns out he's been talking with Oregon since at least last month and he will be taking his official visit to Eugene this weekend with DB DeVante Harris. He's also looking at visits to Cal, TCU and even Texas A&M.

TJ pulled a Westerman. Pretty deceitful. I'm not going to begrudge a kid for not picking Texas, but there are better ways of conducting yourself.

I share your concerns, bluebell. What if Ash gets hurt next year or doesn't show improvement? What if Case becomes unhappy again? What if a school calls Case and says a spot has opened up? Texas came upon the opportunity they've been waiting for to bolster their QB depth by signing Wallace and they passed.

Excellent analysis bluebell and Floss. I feel pretty good about Ash progressing. He seemed to get better with 13 practices before the bowl. He should be able to take a step forward with spring ball, offseason workouts, the summer 7 on 7 drills and Fall Camp. I don't think David will be all conference, but Texas will take slightly above average at this point. Ash is probably going to have win one game by himself next year. Will he answer the bell?

That said, I agree a serious injury to Ash would be catastrophic. I feel OK about Case for a few games in the soft part of the schedule, but if Texas rolls him out against OU, TCU, or even K State, watch out. Harsin needs to set Case down, tell him skill set is extremely limited and that Texas needs him to be a game manager and not a gunslinger.

This is precisely why I don't want Ash punting. Texas a lingering hamstring pull away from the 2012 season falling apart.

You'd think Mack would have learned his lesson about developing quality depth after the Bergeron, Shipley and Brown injuries.

I agree, bill. I'm an Ash guy and cool with him being QB1 from this point forward because I think he'll show some solid improvement with emphasis on him being the main guy for several months leading up to next season. He didn't get that kind of treatment this year except for bowl practices. I just believe in doing everything you can to put your team in the best position to win and having a contingency plan in place should things go sour. Offering and signing Wallace would qualify as one of those things even if all he does is compete with Ash and provide depth. I was never expecting him to be a savior of some sort.

Just a heads up that this week is another dead period so there may not be much news on UT's remaining targets or any new names that could pop up. The staff can't contact anyone until this Friday (January 13th). The final contact period will last for two more weeks until Saturday, January 28th before things go quiet until National Signing Day. Mack Brown will do his remaining in-home visits during this timeframe.

I agree. You'd like your back up to push your starter to be better and to keep the team winning if QB1 goes down. Bo Wallace can do that better than Case.

Perhaps Texas' interest in Wallace was intended to force Case into a decision.

Floss, I need a rules clarification here. Can recruits call the coaches during the dead period?

I've seen it reported different ways, but I think that's definitely a plausible scenario. The way the UT staff did a complete 180 with Wallace in a matter of two or three days indicates Case made a quick decision once he realized the staff was indeed calling his bluff. The talk all year is that Harsin isn't a huge fan of the McCoy camp so I'd like to assume he was prepared to offer Wallace no matter Case's decision, but obviously someone tapped the breaks on the whole thing and Case is back on board for now.

I've yet to find clarification on that one myself. It is my understanding that the recruits are the only ones who can make contact at any time. No hand-written letters, emails or phone calls from coaches are allowed during a "dead period."

Could Texas contact high school coaches and ask them to have to their player contact the Texas staff?

Great question that I don't have the answer to. Sounds like bending the rules to me, but a great tactic if it's not illegal.

LB Brian Nance of Euless Trinity committed to Baylor on Saturday. Good pick-up for the Bears and they'll probably get DT Javonte Magee as well.

A Conference USA and Big East staff. That'll get it done in the SEC.

Hook Em 247 is reporting that Tyrone Swoopes is a confirmed Junior Day visitor. The first Junior Day is on Bill's Birthday February 12.

It's still early, but it looks like Swoopes might be the guy for 2013.

Very nice. I didn't realize Oliver had confirmed as well (or I'm having a brain fart). Here's the current list for the first Junior Day for everyone to see:

    QB, Tyrone Swoopes, Whitewright
    WR, Jake Oliver, Dallas Jesuit
OL, Kent Perkins, Richardson Lake Highlands
    OL/DL, Jake Raulerson, Celina
    ATH, Ricky Seals-Jones, Sealy

It will get real interesting if Barrett is also invited to the first Junior Day. If he's not, then you obviously have your answer who the main target is at QB. UT can realistically scoop up all of those guys above before next year's National Signing Day.

OL/DL Jake Raulerson might be making a move to cement himself as the first commitment of UT's 2013 class. Per Hook 'Em 24/7, he will be visiting Austin two weeks before the first Junior Day on the weekend of January 27th and 28th. Remember that QB Connor Brewer had a similar visit before the first Junior Day last year and he pulled the trigger for UT about a week later. Great, great sign.

Now that is huge news. I think Texas can realistically open with Raulerson, Darius James and Kent Perkins as their first 3 commitments. All are top 50-100 national players.

Inside Texas just tweeted that 2013 QB JT Barrett's coach has said no Junior Day invite has come across his desk as of today. It's still early with about five weeks to go until the first Junior Day, but it could be indicative of where the QB offer is going for 2013 if Barrett doesn't receive an invite rather soon.

Floss, let's say Raulerson is in fact the bell cow and leader of the 2013 class. Does Raulerson have any input on who Texas offers? I know Jake and Christian Morgan are tight. Could a Raulerson recommendation be a factor in Morgan receiving a Texas offer?

That's a really good question and I'll have to get back to you on that. I'd love to know what all is talked about in these meetings. I'm a Morgan fan as well but I'm scared that's he's a borderline offer right now or that he might be slow-played.

My gut feeling is that Christian Morgan is being slow played. I think he'll get a long look during the spring evaluation period. Texas could really use his size and blocking ability at TE.
