Not by a wide margin, but MJ played elite defense while Magic had average defense. It's arguable, but hard to do so when Magic ed up in game 2. Jordan never had a strike against him that big so yeah.

I don't think anyone has a problem with that. I certainly don't. I have a problem with people who think he is the only reason the USA won gold, because he wasn't the only reason. For a lot of the tournament, it could actually be argued that he was more of a hindrance then a help.

I read through all the posts in this thread very carefully...then I re-read because I wanted to make sure I got this right...then I pondered for about 30 min straight..scratched my head and realized something was missing...

I got it...Tim Duncan is no where to be found...he wasn't good enough to make the team in 2008 and he's not good enough now

Let's look at this thing...Kobe came into the league in 96....Duncan the bronze medal winner came in 98...Kobe the gold medal winner is STILL competing on the Olympic stage..and not just competing but he's a co-captain 17 yrs later...competing with and leading guys 10 yrs his junior...

Who would you give more credit to, somebody who carried the load along the way to the finals or somebody who got it done in the final game where the game was on the line?

Me, personally, would give the latter more of a nod. Sure he puts in less work, but he's the one who won that game and that game happened to be the most important one. And honestly, Spain was the only team that could compete with us after Manu was was hurt. We won all the other games by 20+ points I think, it wasn't really a big burden to carry team USA to the finals.

Now, if Lebron & crew did work carrying them past multiple playoff level teams then ofc he'd get most of the credit.

That's why Artest should have won the fmvp. Kobe carried the lakers to the finals, but Artest closed the series against the celtics.

Congrats to Kobe for stepping up at the end of a big game. Too bad it wasn't a playoff game, or an NBA game for that matter, but he deserves credit where it's due for living up to that whole "great closer" le for one time in his life.
